Robinson named Grambling interim head coach

GRAMBLING, LA – Grambling State University President Frank G. Pogue today announced that he has appointed GSU Linebackers Coach Andre Robinson as interim head football coach. Mr. Robinson, an alum and standout collegiate linebacker has been the University’s linebackers coach since 2004.

While a student athlete, Robinson became the first defensive player to be named as Grambling State’s Most Valuable Player. During his collegiate career, from 1977 to 1981, he helped lead the G-Men to three straight SWAC championships. Robinson was named the Bayou Classic’s Most Valuable Player in 1980 in the Tigers’ 43-6 victory over the Southern Jaguars. The following year, he was a consensus All-American selection by the Associated Press, Kodak, The Sporting News and the Sheridan Press and also was named the SWAC’s Defensive Player of the Year.

“Andre Robinson links the legacy of Eddie Robinson to the present football championship era. Andre was an accomplished player at Grambling who was recognized nationally,” says GSU Athletic Director Lin Dawson. During his 30-year coaching career, he has built on his success as a player by developing excellent athletes who were under his tutelage.”

The University is launching its search for a permanent head football coach. While announcing interim appointment, President Pogue noted that Grambling State University enjoys the finest reputation in athletics of any other HBCU and most other institutions in the country: “Our goal is to maintain this cherished reputation of being winners,” he said. “Andre Robinson’s willingness to assume the interim role will allow the University time to identify the strongest candidates.”

Robinson called it an honor and privilege to be asked to step in as the interim head coach. “We will stay our course and remain focused on our young men and keep them together and have a winning football team this season,” he said. “I’m ready and up for the task before me.”

Grambling State Signs Two-Year Football Agreement to Play ULM

“Playing sister institutions within the University of Louisiana System make sense. As athletic administrators, we must look for creative ways in which we can grow our revenue and contain cost. ULM and Grambling State Sign Two-Year Football Agreement

MONROE, La. - The game which produced the largest on-campus collegiate football crowd in north Louisiana history will feature a second and third installment over the next three years. ULM will host Grambling State on Sept. 10, 2011, and Sept. 7, 2013, in Malone Stadium, ULM Director of Athletics Bobby Staub announced Friday afternoon in a press conference at the Monroe Convention Center.

"We're excited about our two-game series with Grambling State University," Staub said. "Our 2007 contest was an overwhelming success and provided an electric atmosphere for fans of both schools as well our student-athletes."

The first meeting between the two schools drew 30,101 fans to ULM's Malone Stadium on Nov. 20, 2007. The game established a new precedent for Football Bowl Subdivision schools in Louisiana as ULM became the first such institution to play Grambling in football - the Warhawks defeated the Tigers 28-14.

"For our football team and our fan base, this is a wonderful opportunity to renew a series that is significant due to the proximity of the two schools," ULM head coach Todd Berry said. "A lot of our players know guys on their team which always makes the game more interesting. The first time ULM and Grambling played the game had a great atmosphere and we are excited to bring that kind of environment back to Malone Stadium."

Three of ULM's four non-conference games for the upcoming season are now in place. The Warhawks open the season at Florida State on Sept. 3 and travel to Iowa on Sept. 24.

Broadway spurns A&T; will remain Grambling's football coach

Updated: 1/28/2011, 6:45 p.m.

Rod Broadway will not be N.C. A&T's next head football coach.

In a conference call Friday morning, Broadway told the Grambling State University President's Executive Committee he will stay with the Tigers.
At noon, Broadway attended a kickoff news conference in Monroe, La., to announce a new two-year series between Grambling and Louisiana-Monroe.

Broadway remains Grambling State coach

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Grambling State announced on Friday that Rod Broadway will remain as its head football coach after he had been a leading candidate for the opening at North Carolina A&T.

Published reports said Broadway would become North Carolina A&T's head coach and Grambling State took down bios of Broadway and the rest of the football coaches from its official athletic website.

But on Friday morning, Grambling State said in an email that Broadway had announced to Grambling State University President's Executive Committee that he would remain at the Southwestern Athletic Conference university.

Grambling's Rod Broadway nears departure

Excerpt:
GRAMBLING — Grambling State head football coach Rod Broadway appears to be on his way to taking the same position at North Carolina A&T University.

“Right now, Rod Broadway is still our head football coach and I think he is mulling over an offer that has been extended by (North Carolina) A&T. That’s as much as I know,’’ Dawson said. “It’s really about him deciding what’s best for him and his family at this point.”

“I know there has been (an offer made). That’s where it is,” Dawson said. “He’s one of the best coaches in America. If it’s not A&T this year, somebody else will come.

Broadway reported to be leaving Grambling; players not yet informed of coach's status

Rod Broadway is reported to be leaving his post as head football coach at Grambling State to take the same position at North Carolina A&T.

Broadway and the rest of his coaching staff’s names were removed from the official Grambling athletics website, GSUTigers.com, on Thursday, and The Triangle Tribune (Durham, N.C.) cited “reliable sources” that Broadway had taken the job.

Neither North Carolina A&T nor Grambling has released an official statement on the matter.

UPDATE: I talked to coach Broadway earlier today. He said the "deal isn't done yet." Stay tuned.

According to reliable sources, Grambling State football coach Rod Broadway is the new coach at N.C. A&T.  Broadway led the Tigers to a black college national championship and several SWAC championships.

Interestingly, his name is already off the roster on the Grambling website. Before Grambling, Broadway led N.C. Central to back-to-back CIAA titles and a black college national title. He and current NCCU coach Henry Frazier had a nice rivalry going in the SWAC and that is sure to continue now that both are together again in the MEAC.

Reports: Rod Broadway Could Be Heading To NC A&T

Greensboro, NC - The rumor mill is churning this afternoon. Unconfirmed reports out of Louisiana tell WFMY News 2 Sports that Grambling State's head football coach Rod Broadway is heading to NC A&T. Reports say it could be announced by this weekend.

Broadway has roots in the Tar Heel state. He coached at NC Central and played defensive lineman at UNC. The Grambling State Head Coach has won three conference championships, including two at NC Central and one at Grambling State.

Grambling excited for its first Urban Invitational

James Cooper isn't even 30 years old, and he has only been the head baseball coach at Grambling State University for one full season. But he has already experienced some of the difficulties that come with trying to recruit the best baseball talent to a small college.

Twice he has seen an athlete essentially commit to his program, only to be spurned. One of those players went instead to Louisiana State, which guaranteed the recruit a walk-on spot.

And he has seen potential recruits turn down baseball for basketball and football elsewhere. That has happened at least four times.

Southern Jaguars rally falls short at Grambling State

Southern University Coach Sandy Pugh
It happened again. In keeping with a decade-long pattern, the Southern men’s basketball team played hard at Grambling on Saturday night. In fact, the Jaguars needed only one or two strong possessions to overtake their archrival on the road. They simply didn’t get what they needed.

Southern’s wild second-half rally fell just short when after Blake Sanford missed two 3-pointers with less than 1:30 remaining, helping the Tigers hold on for a 61-57 victory Saturday night before a crowd of 1,387 at the Grambling Assembly Center.

“First of all, we got behind big, and we spotted them too many points,” SU sixth-year coach Rob Spivery said.

Poor execution costs SU against Grambling

GRAMBLING — Another year. Another trip to Grambling. Another disappointment. Missing shots and failing to execute its halfcourt offense with much success Saturday night, the Southern women’s basketball team suffered a surprising 48-43 loss against Grambling on Saturday night, one that snapped the Jaguars’ two-game win streak to begin Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

It was certainly not what 11th-year coach Sandy Pugh expected.  “Look. I mean, we just didn’t ... I mean, this was one of those games where you say, ‘you’ve got to be kidding,’” said Pugh, who described herself as “frustrated” after the game.

Doug Williams’ son commits to play at Grambling State

He lived in Tampa, Fla., where his dad first played pro football. He lived in Grambling, where his dad played, coached and became one of Grambling’s most celebrated legends. He has the same name. So, yes, D.J. Williams knows what it’s like to live in Doug Williams’ long shadow. Evidently, he’s very comfortable with that.

Doug Williams III, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback known to everyone as D.J., has committed to play next season at Grambling, saying he has no problem with the added pressure of being the son of a campus legend. “I mean, I’ve been handling it my whole life,” he said. “I’ve got the same exact name as him. The comparisons start from there.

“It’s pressure, but it’s nothing I can’t deal with.”

Grambling State easily defeats rival Southern 38-17 in Bayou Classic

There’s little question as to how much the Grambling State players wished the Tigers had one more game next weekend in Birmingham, Ala., the site of the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.

Since the Tigers just barely missed on playing for the conference title, there probably isn’t a better way for Grambling to wrap up its successful season than taking it out on its biggest rival in what so many supporters deem as the most important game of every season. Grambling State (9-2 overall, 8-1 SWAC) was never threatened as it defeated Southern 38-17 in Saturday’s State Farm Bayou Classic at the Superdome.

Grambling brings home Bayou Classic victory

NEW ORLEANS — Frank Warren ran for three touchdowns and collected MVP honors, defensive end Jomarcus Savage had a key interception return for a touchdown and Grambling beat Southern 38-17 in the Bayou Classic on Saturday.

Grambling (9-2 overall, 8-1 SWAC) forced Southern (2-9, 1-8) to punt on its opening drive, but GSU returner Kiare Thompson muffed the punt and the Jaguars recovered deep in GSU territory, leading to a 27-yard field goal and a 3-0 Southern lead early in the first quarter.

Grambling beats Southern, 38-17 in Bayou Classic

Frank Warren ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns and Anthony Carrothers passed for 167 yards as Grambling dominated Southern 38-10 before the smallest crowd in Bayou Classic history Saturday. The Tigers (9-2) won for the third consecutive time against the Jaguars (2-9) and, in the process, handed Southern its first nine-loss season in school history.

It was a fitting end to a disappointing first season under new coach Stump Mitchell, who set the bar sky-high for the Jaguars during the preseason, saying he thought his team had a chance to go undefeated and win the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.

Grambling State in showdown at Texas Southern

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - It may not be one of the neutral-site "classic" games that Southwestern Athletic Conference teams often play in, but Grambling State's visit to Texas Southern Thursday night is a classic matchup. The showdown, fittingly, will be broadcast on ESPN Classic. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

SWAC races going down to wire

This much we know for sure: When the Southwestern Athletic Conference holds its championship game Dec. 11 in Birmingham, Ala., the two contestants will need a city map and a decent restaurant guide. After all, they’ll be visiting Legion Field for the first time in at least two years.

Prairie View, the reigning SWAC champion, lost too many early conference games and is out of the running for the Western Division title. Alabama A&M, last year’s Eastern champion, has found itself in a major rebuilding year; the Bulldogs have lost five straight games since they defeated Southern on Sept. 25.

Exama leads GSU to 35-0 homecoming win

Saturday was homecoming for Grambling, but one of the happiest fans at Eddie Robinson Stadium might have been a visitor attending her first game of the season. The Concordia Hornets showed early they should not be taken as lightly as the 82-7 rout in the teams' previous meeting might indicate.

Concordia's offense drove the ball 51 yards on the game's opening drive and came to the line of scrimmage looking for more on second down from the 24, but Grambling linebacker Cliff Exama had other ideas. The junior intercepted Concordia quarterback Sherman Stephens...

GRAMBLING — Cornelius Walker and Frank Warren combined for 189 yards rushing and each scored a touchdown Saturday as Grambling State shut out Concordia College 35-0.

Warren ran for 92 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown, and Walker had 97 yards with a 4-yard scoring run for the Tigers (8-1), who have won eight games in a row. Big plays move Grambling past UAPB

Monte Coleman expresses almost weekly his fondness for wide receiver Raymond Webber. On Saturday, his chosen adjective was “special.” Arkansas-Pine Bluff ’s breakout star nearly brought the team back from a four touchdown deficit in an eventual 35-25 loss to Grambling State in front of an announced crowd of 29,373 at War Memorial Stadium.

The senior caught 9 passes for 243 yards with 1 touchdown, and his 71 receptions for the season set a new UAPB record. But it wasn’t enough to cancel out a second-quarter flurry that saw Grambling State score three times in just over four minutes and erase UAPB’s 10-point lead.

“[Webber] has been very special for us this year,” Coleman said. “He’s definitely ...

GSU's Warren rushing toward record books

GRAMBLING, LA — Grambling State running back Frank Warren is well on his way to shattering just about every meaningful rushing record in program history.

After Saturday's 209-yard, two-touchdown performance in GSU's 35-14 victory over Mississippi Valley State, Warren has 3,515 rushing yards for his career and 1,142 yards this season. He's already become Grambling's first 1,000-yard rushing since Brad Hill accomplished the feat in 2001, but even bigger accolades are on the horizon. Warren needs 260 more rushing yards to break...

Grambling's Warren earns SWAC honor

Grambling running back Frank Warren has been named the SWAC's Offensive Player of the Week. Warren carried 27 times for 209 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground in Grambling’s 35-14 victory at Mississippi Valley State. Grambling Tigers grind out win over MVSU Delta Devils

GREENVILLE, Miss. — Grambling State's performance against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday was far from perfect, but it was more than enough to get the job done.

The Tigers were plagued by penalties, turnovers and a general lack of focus, but still notched a comfortable 35-14 victory over the winless Delta Devils and remained perfect in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. "We didn't play like we're capable of playing, and we didn't make the progress I thought we would make, but a win's a win," Grambling head coach Rod Broadway said. "We still beat 'em by 21."

Grambling burns winless Valley 35-14

GREENVILLE, MS — Frank Warren rushed for 209 yards and two touchdowns, and Grambling State rumbled past Mississippi Valley State 35-14 on Saturday. Alcorn State ready for Grambling‎

LORMAN, MS — After dropping their first conference game of the year last week against Texas Southern, the Alcorn State Braves are looking to get back on the winning track.

But it sure isn’t going to be easy as the Braves will head to Grambling, La., to face the only undefeated team in SWAC play, the Grambling State Tigers.

After losing their first game of the season to Football Bowl Subdivision team Louisiana Tech, the Tigers (4-1, 4-0 SWAC) have reeled off four victories in a row, including a 22-7 victory over Alabama State last week.

GSU key: Play smart

GRAMBLING, LA — The Grambling State football team aims to make some improvements in discipline and alignment when it hosts Alcorn State for a 2 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Robinson Stadium.

The Tigers are 4-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play, but they are also one of the most penalized teams in the conference. GSU ranks ninth out of 10 SWAC teams in yards penalized, averaging 85 penalty yards per game.

Mirror image: Frosh QBs on display in Alcorn State-Grambling matchup

Rod Broadway knows how Earnest Collins and Alcorn State feel right about now - that is, life with a true freshman quarterback. Collins and the Braves (3-2, 2-1 SWAC) travel to the conference's lone undefeated team Saturday, Broadway's Grambling Tigers (4-1, 4-0). They do so with QB Brandon Bridge, who graduated from high school about six months ago.

Broadway knows all about that. True freshman Anthony Carrothers leads the Tigers' offense. "We know a little bit about what they're going through," Grambling's fourth-year coach said.

Jomarcus Savage has happy homecoming with Grambling victory over A&M

HUNTSVILLE, AL. -- When Jomarcus Savage decided to transfer from Auburn, he briefly considered Alabama A&M. "My parents were in my ear," he admitted. Naturally so, since his father Joe Savage played for A&M and since Jomarcus played at Johnson High. Alas, Alabama A&M was "too close to home," Jomarcus said.

Grambling State was apparently the right fit. On Saturday afternoon, as A&M held homecoming, so did Savage. For the first time since he was a 9-year-old linebacker in Pop Warner football, he was back at Louis Crews Stadium, this time for Grambling's 25-22 win over A&M.

Football team and the excitement around it proves to be heartbeat of Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, AL. -- The prettiest girl. The most spectacular day. The greatest food. Every day should be homecoming. They just need to turn out differently than this one.

In a luxury box above Louis Crews Stadium, Alabama A&M president Dr. Andrew Hugine Jr. was following the frantic final seconds. "If we can just get close enough to kick a field goal," he was saying as the Bulldogs gained a late first down, then stopped the clock.

Peering over rows of his guests in theater seats, Hugine watched Deaunte Mason throw his 31st pass of the game. If ... If ...

Batiste's return sparks GSU comeback

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Alabama A&M, with a chance to prove it is one of the elite teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Saturday, failed to deliver. The Bulldogs, who have struggled against Grambling since joining the conference, had the Tigers on the ropes, but could not land the punch to knock them out.

Frank Warren ran roughshod through A&M's vaunted defense, and the Tigers also got an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that proved to be the difference as Grambling hung on for a 25-22 victory before an announced crowd of 12,328 on homecoming at Louis Crews Stadium.

'Sweet-Feet': Grambling, Frank Warren focused on running game

GRAMBLING, LA — You can't win the Southwestern Atheletic Conference Championship at the State Fair Classic, but you certainly can lose it.

In each of the last two seasons the winner of the annual matchup between Grambling State and Prairie View A&M has gone on to run the table in conference play, win the SWAC Western Division and win the SWAC Championship game in December. The loser of the game has never really had a chance to get back in the race, regardless of how well it played for the rest of the season.

GSU's Anthony cleared to 'exercise'

Grambling State defensive end Christian Anthony has been "released to do some exercising" on his own, six weeks after the 22-year-old senior suffered a heart attack. "He's doing much better," Grambling head coach Rod Broadway said. "It's just moderate exercising and we're telling him, 'don't overdo it.' We're just trying to get him well. Our main concern is he gets healthy."  Anthony, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound defensive end, was dominant last season.

GSU's Warren fun to watch, a pain to play

In preparing for a key Southwestern Athletic Conference showdown against Grambling this week, Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones has spent more than a few minutes watching video of Frank Warren.

Upon closer inspection, he’d rather not watch it. Jones has decided he’s got a respectful kind of love-hate thing going on with Warren, the Tigers’ top tailback. As an objective judge of talent, Jones loves what he sees in Warren, a 5-foot-9, 200-pound tailback from Pleasant Grove, Ala., who’s off to a cheetah-like start this season.

Prairie View hurt by fumble in 34-17 loss to Grambling State

DALLAS, TX — Penalties and a costly fumble doomed Prairie View A&M in a 34-17 loss to Grambling State in the State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl. The Panthers, (1-3, 1-2 SWAC) were penalized seven times for 62 yards and fumbled inside the Tigers’ 5-yard line in the second half.

After a 17-yard pass from KJ Black to Shaun Stephens on the opening drive of the second half gave
the Panthers a 17-14 lead, Prairie View was poised to score again on its next possession.
After Black hit Devin Brown for a 21-yard gain to the Grambling 3-yard line, Brown fumbled, killing the drive and any Prairie View momentum.

“It killed us,” Panthers head coach Henry Frazier III said. “We had the lead. We should have scored again. That was very devastating. That gave them the momentum.”

State Fair Classic: Big plays help Grambling State top Prairie View A&M

Grambling State used big plays in the second half to defeat Prairie View A&M, 34-17, at the State Fair Classic on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl. The Tigers avenged their loss from last year, their first in the series since 1986.

A 59-yard bomb from Anthony Carrothers to Kiare Thompson with 4:21 left put Grambling State up by 10 and sealed the Panthers' fate. Grambling State's Cornelius Walker scored on a 66-yard run with 1:24 remaining for the final score.

The Panthers' defense gave them a chance by stuffing Frank Warren on a fourth-and-1 at Prairie View's 14 with six minutes left and Prairie View down by a field goal. But Prairie View's drive consisted of an incompletion, a sack, a false start and a near-interception. Carrothers hooked up with Thompson on the following drive.

JSU Darkside defense anything but against G-men

GRAMBLING, LA. — Milton Patterson dropped his head and frowned as he walked into the locker room following Jackson State's 28-21 loss to Grambling State on Saturday night. JSU's starting inside linebacker didn't have an answer for all of those gaping holes in the run defense or for all of those missed tackles.

"Frustrated right now," he mumbled. "I can't even think about it."

Clearly, Patterson was still awestruck by it all - and that's before he saw the statistics. Jackson State allowed 379 rushing yards, the most by an opponent under coach Rick Comegy and defensive coordinator Darrin Hayes' five years at the school. A defense once dubbed the Darkside was anything but Saturday.

Defense bends for GSU, holds

GRAMBLING — Grambling State and Jackson State's matchup Saturday lived up to the all the hype of the SWAC rivals' sixth meeting in less than three calendar years. In the end, coach Rod Broadway's Tigers needed a little bit of everything junior defensive back David Stuckman had to offer to hang on for a thrilling 28-21 victory.

Jackson State junior quarterback Casey Therriault spotted Anthony Mayes breaking toward the left side of the end zone as he dropped back on fourth-and-2 from the Grambling 12-yard line with the clock winding down to less than 10 seconds.

Air Raid grounded

GRAMBLING, LA. — High-powered and having fun, quarterback Casey Therriault and Jackson State's Air Raid offense entered Saturday's game at Grambling State overflowing with a confidence that this program hadn't seen in nearly a decade.
