Hampton 68, Bethune-Cookman 56

DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- Bethune-Cookman coach Clifford Reed thought his team "lacked passion . . . and toughness" in a disappointing 68-56 loss Saturday to Hampton at Moore Gymnasium.

"There's no excuse for our guys to come out flat and not play hard," Reed said.

Bethune-Cookman fell to 10-9, 5-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as it lost its first conference game and first game at home this season. In their first home conference game, the Wildcats never led and were only able to tie the score twice. Reed said the home letdown wasn't a surprise.

Hampton rolls to win at Bethune-Cookman, ties for MEAC lead

Charles Funches scored the game’s first nine points on 3-pointers, and Hampton University never trailed during a 68-56 victory Saturday at Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Pirates (15-4, 5-1), who have won three straight games, moved into a tie for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference lead with B-CU's Wildcats (10-9, 5-1), whose five MEAC wins all came on the road.

After leading 34-23 at halftime, the Pirates poured it on. Kwame Morgan scored six points during a 10-3 run, and Wesley Dunning scored four in an 11-3 push to put HU in front 55-32 with 10:52 remaining.

In wild game, Hampton University holds off North Carolina A&T

HAMPTON, VA — In a frantic back-and-forth game that involved 11 ties and three lead changes, Hampton University defeated North Carolina A&T 82-77 Monday night at the HU Convocation Center.

Junior guard Kwame Morgan led all scorers with a career-high 36 points, going 11-for-22 from the floor and hitting six 3-pointers. His short jumper from 24.1 seconds to play sealed the victory for HU (14-4, 4-1 MEAC). Junior guard Darrion Pellum, a Hampton High product, added 19 points while Charles Funches scored 12. Seven Pirates made the scoring column. Danny Agbelese grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Missed free throws ruin A&T's upset bid

HAMPTON, Va. — Thomas Coleman scored his 1,000th point and a few more, but N.C. A&T had no answer for Kwame Morgan, particularly in the second half Monday. Morgan scored 36 points — 21 in the second half — and fueled a 15-5 run that stretched a two-point lead into an 82-77 win in MEAC play at Hampton's Convocation Center. It was the best night of his career.

The Aggies (8-10, 3-2 in the MEAC) climbed back to within three at 76-73, but — typically on this evening — Morgan hit a 16-footer to establish a Hampton lead that couldn't be overcome.

HAMPTON 71, N.C. A&T 36

Hampton (12-5, 5-0 Mid Eastern Athletic Conference) trounced visiting N.C. A&T (6-9, 3-2) 71-36 Monday for the Pirates’ fourth straight win. Freshman Pirates guard Nicole Hamilton (of Phoebus) scored 18 of her career-high 23 points in the first half, and Quanneisha Perry grabbed 13 boards.

Hampton University names Willie Snead III as its new offensive coordinator

Willie Snead III is Hampton University's new offensive coordinator, replacing Fred Kaiss, who was not retained after last season.

Snead comes to HU from Muskegon Heights High School in Michigan. He was head coach there for two years, compiling a 16-8 record with one trip to the state semifinals. In 2008, he coached Holland Christian to a state championship, also in Michigan.

Kaiss was offensive coordinator at HU from 2001 to 2006 before leading the offense at Tennessee State through the 2009 season. His return to Hampton wasn't successful. Last year, the Pirates averaged 17.5 points per game, 103rd out of 117 FCS teams and down from 2009's average of 19.5. HU's average of 301.7 yards per game ranked 93rd, and its 156 passing yards were 94th.

We just have to have the right leader and that's my job to go out and try to find the person that can take us to the next level and that's what we're going to do."

Hampton 77, Colorado State 75

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Hampton’s Kwame Morgan tallied 29 points, none bigger than the final three, as the junior guard knocked down a trey with 0.8 seconds left, to defeat Colorado State, 77-75, snapping the Rams’ six-game win streak.

Colorado State trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, but fought back to take their first lead, 62-61, with 7:20 left to play in the contest. And with CSU clinging to a one-point lead, 75-74, with 7.3 seconds left, Morgan’s shot all but ended the game. The Rams’ ensuing inbound was deflected back out of bounds and when they got the ball in play, Travis Franklin’s desperation heave with 0.4 left came up well short.

The Rams committed a season-worst 18 turnovers, and the Pirates converted those extra possessions into 23 points. With the loss, Colorado State falls to 10-4 on the season while Hampton improves to 11-3.

MORGAN SHOOTS PIRATES PAST RAMS

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Hampton University junior guard Kwame Morgan hit a 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining to lift the men’s basketball team past Colorado State 77-75 on Saturday in the final day of the Hilltop Classic at War Memorial Gym.

It was Morgan’s second game-winning trey of the season; he also hit the game-winner in the closing seconds on Dec. 22 against Liberty. Morgan (Largo, Md.) scored a career-high 29 points on 8-for-19 shooting and 6-for-14 from 3-point range in keying Hampton’s fourth win in its last five games. Hampton’s win also snapped Colorado State’s six-game winning streak.

Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) scored 17 points and dished out a team-high four assists. Senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) and junior guard Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.) each added 10 points, with Funches adding a team-high eight rebounds.

Morgan sinks Liberty for Pirates' second straight win

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men’s basketball team trailed for much of the night Wednesday, but junior guard Kwame Morgan gave the Pirates the lead when it mattered most, sinking a 3-pointer with one second to play to help Hampton beat Liberty 62-59 at the HU Convocation Center.

The Pirates (9-2) trailed for 39 minutes, 20 seconds, but Morgan (Largo, Md.) tied the game at 59-59 with 40 seconds to play with a trey. Liberty had a shot, but the Flames turned the ball over with 20 seconds remaining, thanks to a steal by junior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.).

Liberty (7-6) took a 53-39 lead with 9:44 to play after Evan Gordon sank a 3-pointer, but the Pirates responded with a 13-0 run, cutting Liberty’s lead to one, 53-52, with 3:52 to play on a layup from senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.).

Liberty Flames commit 26 turnovers in loss to the Hampton Pirates

HAMPTON, Va. — Liberty men’s basketball assistant coach Jason Eaker walked off the floor at the Hampton University Convocation Center, bowed his head, closed his eyes in frustration and shook his head sharply. He knew his team had given one away Wednesday night.

Interpret the words “give away” literally. Despite shooting 52.1 percent against the nation’s fourth-best field-goal percentage defense, Liberty lost to Hampton 62-59 thanks to 26 turnovers. The Flames (7-6) blew an 18-point lead, including a five-point lead in the final two minutes.

And fittingly, the game’s key play was a turnover, which was the theme of the night for Liberty.

Hampton U's Rose gets multi-year extension

Hampton University Pirates Coach Donovan Rose

Hampton University has announced a multi-year contract extension for football coach Donovan Rose, who is 11-11 in two years as the Pirates' head coach and coming off a 6-5 season. The university wouldn't release terms or length of the contract.

Rose, an 18-year assistant with the Pirates and a 1979 graduate of HU, replaced Jerry Holmes before the 2009 season. Holmes, another former Pirates assistant, went 6-5 in one season after replacing longtime coach Joe Taylor, now the head coach at Florida A&M who was 136-49-1 in 16 seasons at Hampton, winning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships from 2004-2006, before leaving in 2007.

"Coach Rose has worked relentlessly to return our football program to its glory years, and ...

FAMU Rattlers will get shot at MEAC title

The football season has come to this for Florida A&M. Sudden death against Bethune-Cookman for at least a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.

The Rattlers got this far after sputtering early in the season, but for the second game behind redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Trainor they live for one more chance to stay in the league championship race. Hampton kept threatening to deny FAMU, but in the end the Rattlers' defense was too stingy, securing a 17-13 victory in front 10,306 at Bragg Stadium.

It was FAMU's fifth straight win after ...

Defense steps up, punches ticket for championship game

Florida A&M's defense made plays when it mattered and took advantage of Hampton's eighth-ranked scoring offense en route to a 17-12 victory at Bragg Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The Hampton University Pirates (5-5, 4-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) turned up the defense pressure in the second half but could not overcome the pressure from the Rattlers' defense. The Pirates only managed six points in the second half, and couldn't erase an 11-point halftime deficit.

FAMU receivers focus more after dropped passes

The first two throws of the game could not have been tighter spirals. Yet both of them still ended up on the turf as Rattler wide receivers let the ball hit them in the hands before it fell incomplete. But trust is built on the practice field, not on Saturdays. So FAMU quarterback Austin Trainor kept firing away to his receivers.

Kevin Elliot, Isaac West and tight end Max Purcell combined for five drops on the afternoon, but each made a contribution to the team that bailed out their freshman quarterback. West and Elliot led FAMU with four receptions and accounted for 104 of the team's 156 passing yards.

Hampton U falls to .500 with 17-12 loss at Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — — Dyrii McCain sat in the back of the end zone with his hands on his head, panting, in part amazement and mostly frustration as yet another game slipped away from his Hampton football team. McCain and Donte Davis were the targets of a last-second heave from quarterback David Legree as the Pirates tried to ruin the Florida A&M football season for the second straight season.

But before either could come down with the football, the ball was intercepted and the Pirates dropped a fourth straight game, falling 17-12 in a tightly contested Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game that dropped them to .500.

HU Seeks Redemption at FAMU

It's do or die football time for FAMU football. If for no other reason, the Rattlers should put every ounce of energy into steamrolling the Pirates for the 0-25 butt kicking they received last season, that knocked them out of an FCS at-large playoff berth.

Hampton has shown they can play with the MEAC's best -- blowing a field goal in the last four minutes at South Carolina State that prevented an upset of the Bulldogs. The Pirates also stayed even with undefeated B-CU (9-0, 6-0 MEAC) for a half last Saturday, before turnovers derailed their attempt to knock the Wildcats from sole possession of first place in the conference race.

The Rattlers entire season is riding on this game and a win provides FAMU with the opportunity to battle B-CU in the Florida Classic (next week) for a share of the MEAC crown.

Game time is at 3:00 p.m., Saturday at Bragg Memorial Stadium, Tallahassee. View the game live via the Internet at: FAMCAST.

HU Seeks Redemption at FAMU

Head coach Donovan Rose has a smart kid.

In the aftermath of a heartbreaking 23-18 loss to Bethune-Cookman University last Saturday, Rose felt disappointed. He was upset. His team had dominated the game going into halftime, only to bear the brunt of five turnovers in the second half. After a five-game winning streak followed by three straight losses, Rose, not surprisingly, has a chip on his shoulder.

His 11-year old son, D.J., didn't give him a chance to lick his wounds.

'09 shutout loss motivates Rattlers

As each quarter expired without a score by Florida A&M, what was transpiring on the football field gradually became very surreal. Hampton University kept running and running until it racked up 341 yards rushing in a game that ended with the Rattlers' first shutout in a conference game in more than two decades.

The loss ended...

Seniors set for last home game

This Saturday will be the last time the seniors on the Florida A&M football team take the field in Bragg Memorial Stadium as the Rattlers take on the Pirates of Hampton University. FAMU is in the hunt for a MEAC championship and post-season play, while the Pirates come to Tallahassee looking to play spoiler.

HU fumbles away chances to win in 23-18 loss to Bethune-Cookman

HAMPTON — Going into halftime, Donovan Rose's Hampton University team had a seven-point lead on undefeated Bethune-Cookman, the No. 11 team in the country, a team that hadn't trailed all season and was putting up 44 points a game. "I felt great," Rose said.

Rose's happiness lasted 19 seconds into the second half, until the first of two turnovers-turned-touchdowns in a span of 3:04 swung the momentum and the outcome in the Pirates' 23-18 loss to the Wildcats on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium.

Hampton squanders chances as Bethune-Cookman escapes

HAMPTON — When they pen the epitaph of Hampton University's 2010 football season, it will read something like: Here lies a team whose offense was too often inoffensive and whose special teams were anything but. On a day when the Pirates' gallant defense again played well enough to win, the offense and special teams again cost them a chance at a signature victory and a share of first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Instead, the Pirates go back to the training room and the video room for a heaping helping of "What if …" after Saturday's 23-18 loss to league leader Bethune-Cookman.

HU notebook: Hurt Legree gets playing time after Bynes was injured

HAMPTON — David Legree dressed out for Saturday's homecoming game against Bethune-Cookman, but Hampton's starting junior quarterback in no way expected to play. In fact, with junior Herb Bynes leading the Pirates down the field early in the second quarter, Legree's thoughts strayed to the locker room.

"Herb was playing so good, I was two plays from going to take off my equipment," said Legree, who aggravated lingering right leg injuries last week.

SC State Pulls Out Tough 10-7 Victory Over Hampton

ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1 MEAC)turned things around with a hard fought 10-7 victory over the Hampton University Pirates (5-2, 4-1 MEAC), Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

The Bulldogs celebrating “Homecoming 2010” took advantage of every option in front of a home crowd 22,000 students, alums, and former Bulldog athletes to preserve the victory.

“We are happy to get a win and it wasn’t easy beating a team like Hampton,” stated SC State head coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough. “We kind of got things together and turned our week around after a tough loss to Bethune-Cookman a week ago.”

Bulldogs boot the Pirates, 10-7

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Scott’s Erickson’s 48-yard field goal with 7:32 to go in the fourth quarter lifted South Carolina State to a 10-7 conference victory against Hampton on Saturday before a homecoming crowd of 22,010 at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

The win allowed the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1) to stay in the running for at least a share of the MEAC title and a spot in the FCS playoffs. Hampton (5-2, 4-1) saw its five-game winning streak end.

“That was a win that we had to have, and we found a way to get it done against a real good team,” Bulldogs coach Buddy Pough said. “Scott’s been hitting them pretty good for us all season, so I was pretty confident when I sent him out. He’s as good as you’ll find in the country.”

Hampton University's five-game winning streak ends with 10-7 loss at South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — In a game dominated by defense, Hampton's MEAC showdown with two-time defending South Carolina State on Saturday came down to special teams.

The host Bulldogs received a decisive 48-yard field goal from Scott Erickson with 7:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, while Hampton freshman Rodrigo Hernandez was 0-for-2, including a botched-snap mishap that doomed a potential game-tying bid from 37 yards out with 3:14 to go.

Erickson's 10th straight successful kick was the longest of his career, and lifted the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1 MEAC) to a 10-7 win that kept their conference championship hopes alive. For the Pirates (5-2, 4-1), it was the end of a five-game winning streak and the fifth straight loss to S.C. State.

NSU is rivalry win away from rebound

Hampton University coach Donovan Rose said records don't matter in rivalry games. Norfolk State hopes he's right. Entering the 48th Battle of the Bay between NSU and Hampton at 1 p.m. today, the 4-1 Pirates sit atop the MEAC with a 3-0 league record.

The Spartans (1-2, 2-3), meanwhile, have had all reasonable hopes for a conference title dashed and will be manufacturing motivation for the last half of the season. "We still got pride to win," senior lineman Calton Ford said. " The whole goal is to win. A couple games don't dictate the season or who you are. They don't tell who you are or what you're known for after you've done things. We still have pride in the season."

Hampton hosts Battle of the Bay

Hampton, VA (Sports Network) - Saturday's Bethune-Cookman at South Carolina State matchup in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is one of the more anticipated games of the season. It's offense versus defense. Bethune-Cookman's upstart team leads the FCS in both points and yards per game. Meanwhile, South Carolina State's MEAC power leads the nation in total defense.

What shouldn't be overlooked with this big matchup is that Hampton could hold first place all by itself come late Saturday afternoon.

Friendship takes backseat to Battle of the Bay when Hampton faces Norfolk State

Sherron Childress and Jacobi Fenner are friends — for 51 weeks of the year. The other week, they're football players trying to beat the living daylights out of each other in the annual showdown known as the Battle of the Bay.

"Phone calls are cut out," said Childress, Norfolk State's senior tight end who went to Hampton High with Fenner, Hampton University's senior linebacker. "We speak when we see each other, but as far as holding a real conversation — it's game week. We have to prepare. But after the game, we'll be friends. We'll go out and hang out with each other and talk about the game."

On Campus: NSU coach Pete Adrian knows a thing or two about rivalries

Norfolk State coach Pete Adrian has been in involved in a rivalry or two in his playing and coaching careers. For his money, his team's annual showdown against nearby MEAC rival Hampton, known as the Battle of the Bay, is among the best in the business.

"These are great games. That’s one thing that college football is all about, is rivalries," Adrian said. "I can remember when I played at West Virginia, we had a team called Pitt. And that’s the Backyard Brawl, and that was really the beginning of it for me, to see the intensity.

Hampton Pirates Get Past North Carolina A&T Aggies

HAMPTON, VA – Coming into Saturday’s football game here at Armstrong Stadium, the Hampton University Pirates had not lost a season-opener since 2003. Behind the arm and legs of quarterback David Legree and running back Antwon Chisholm, the Pirates improved upon that streak after a 35-21 victory over the Aggies of North Carolina A&T.

Hampton improved to 2-1 on the season and a more important 2-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Aggies dropped to 0-3 on the year and 0-2 in MEAC play.

The Pirates opened the game slowly as they would score just once in the first half on a 34-yard pass from Legree to Donte Davis for the first score of the game. The Aggies were not going to be outdone on the ensuing kick-off as Justin Ferrell retuned the kickoff 85 yards to tie the game at 7-7.

Legree's four TD passes lead Hampton past NC A&T 35-21

Hampton, VA - The scores came often as North Carolina A&T paid a visit to Armstrong Stadium on Saturday night. As the Aggies faced Hampton, two long-time college football rivals renewed a tradition. The Aggies and Hampton's Pirates have played for many years and are both members of MEAC. The contest turned into a scoring parade, with the Pirates winning, 35-21.

After a scoreless first quarter, the teams found the end zone. The scoring came within just a few seconds in the second period. Hampton's Donte Davis hauled in a 34-yard pass from David Legree. N.C. A&T answered quickly with a blazing 85-yard kickoff return by Justin Ferrell. The offenses, especially Hampton's, really moved into high gear in the second half.

Recruiting rivalry shaping up between schools

The schools are a day away from becoming rivals on the football field. But are William and Mary and Old Dominion also beginning a heated recruiting battle for Hampton Roads talent? No more so, say officials at both universities, than any other in-state programs.

"From a recruiting standpoint, I really feel like it's us, William and Mary, Richmond and JMU, the four of us, all waving that CAA flag to the kids," ODU coach Bobby Wilder said. "I say that with all due respect to the two MEAC teams (Hampton and Norfolk State) that are in-state and the two Big South teams (Liberty and VMI) that are in-state. We're trying to wave that CAA flag, so we are competing for the same kids.

"Now, you get kids that are at different levels of interest in the school, kids who want a city school, or a liberal arts school, or a private school. But we've all waving the same flag."

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI -- The Dan Enos coaching era at Central Michigan University began with a bang. Solid play by special teams got it going as the Chippewas built a large early lead and cruised to a 33-0 win against Hampton on Thursday night in front of 17,311 fans at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The opening-game shutout was the first by CMU since 1979, when the Chippewas beat Western Michigan 10-0 in the school's first Mid-American Conference championship season. It also marked Hampton's first shutout since 1984, a 44-0 loss to Tennessee St.

"Obviously, we won, and that was the goal the entire season," Enos said. "Special teams, we challenged the kids all week that we should make a difference. We really hammered that home, and we thought we made a huge impact with their play today."

Special teams came into play on the Pirates' second drive when redshirt freshman long snapper Vincent Harper snapped the ball over the head of punter Jordan Stovall and into the end zone for a CMU safety. On the ensuing kickoff, Central Michigan sophomore wide receiver and kick returner Cody Wilson raced 81 yards to the Hampton 4-yard line. A face mask penalty advanced the ball to the 2.

Amazing Mr. MEAC is bustin' a move, evoking smiles

Dancing 68-year-old performed on sidelines for years without title.

Mr. MEAC wants people to do a double-take when he drops into a crouch, then reaches around to grab his coat collar and "pull" himself back up. "It looks like you are pulling yourself right up with your hand," said Al Ford, "Mr. MEAC" to the people who watch him dance and move to the rhythms of James Brown and others during games of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Ford, 68, of Georgetown, S.C., was in Winston-Salem for the MEAC Tournament at Joel Coliseum, which ended yesterday. Ford's been dancing ever since he was a kid. But he's been called Mr. MEAC for only the past three or four years, after someone with the conference noticed him dancing on the sidelines.

I was doing the James Brown, and she came and took my coat and draped it over me like they would for James Brown when he walked offstage," Ford said. "They asked me if I wanted to be Mr. MEAC." He did. Ford likes to change suits during the tournament to keep things fresh. He went through eight different suits on Friday, when he danced during four semifinal men's and women's tournament games.

It's not a paid job. "Oh, no no no, this is an honor," he said. "I went to a MEAC school. It is an honor to represent the MEAC colleges. I like to dance. I like to entertain. I like to dress and it gives me an outlet. They gave me a card and I can attend any MEAC school athletic function."

Although Ford spent a year playing basketball at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) in 1961, he finished his schooling in New York and spent about 25 years there working as an auditor. Ford came back south, owned a McDonald's Restaurant franchise in Moncks Corner, S.C., and also managed a Bojangles' in Georgetown from 1995 to 2003, when he retired.
