NEW ORLEANS — The streaks continue for Xavier University of Louisiana's cross country teams and freshman siblings Zahri and Kwame Jackson.
XU has won all the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Runner of the Week awards this season. Zahri Jackson is 3-for-3 as the women's recipient, and brother Kwame earned his second in a row after teammate Matt Pieri won for the opening week.
Zahri Jackson placed fifth out of 41 runners Friday in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational at Lafayette, La. Her time of 20 minutes, 4.6 seconds for 5,000 meters is the seventh fastest in school history. Kwame was third out of 40 men, and his four-mile time of 21:46.1 is XU's second fastest ever.

The Jacksons are from Kingwood, Texas, and graduates of Kingwood Park High School. Each has three top-10 finishes in the first three meets of the season.
Zahri Jackson is the first XU female runner to win three consecutive GCAC awards.
Both XU teams will compete Saturday morning in the LSU Invitational at Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge, La. The women's 6K will start at 8:05, followed by the men's 8K at 9:15.
COLUMBIA, SC – Emmanuel Houston scored three touchdowns to lead the Benedict College Tigers to their first football victory of the season, 23-17 victory over the Shaw University Bears in a non-conference NCAA Division II game Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
This week the Tigers won the turnover battle, intercepting Shaw's freshman quarterback Homer Causey three times, including once in the end zone, and recovering one fumble.
“We had a good week of practice, and I thought we would play that way,” said Benedict head coach Stan Conner. “We still had some unforced errors we have to eliminate, but we are on the right track.”
The Tigers, now 1-2, return to action on Thursday night to face Fort Valley State at home in a regionally-televised game.Kickoff is 8 p.m. at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
Charlotte, NC - The Johnson C. Smith University football team stayed on course and prevailed for a 14-7 victory against Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon inside the Irwin Belk Complex. JCSU improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA after their first conference contest of the season.
This ball game started off as a stalemate with both teams feeling each other out. William Rudd received a lot of playing time in the first half for Virginia State. Fortunately for JCSU, Mr. Rudd is the Virginia State punter. Rudd came out to punt on three of the first four Trojans offensive drives. On the first drive, Rudd had a 39 yard field goal attempt blocked.
The first quarter ended without a score for either team. JCSU finally put together a nine play, 81-yard scoring drive in the second quarter. After driving the team to the VSU seven; freshman quarterback Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) connected with sophomore receiver Avius Capers (Charlotte, NC) on a fade route to the left for the touchdown.
Capers' touchdown would be the only score of the first half.
Fayetteville, NC - Cedrick Snead hugged freshman quarterback Chauncey Concepcion as they jogged together toward the Fayetteville State sideline, and benched starter Brandon Blumears-Cluff gave Concepcion a congratulatory slap on the helmet.
Concepcion capped his first series with a crowd-pleasing touchdown pass, but the honeymoon period quickly turned into a painful indoctrination.
Elizabeth City State forced three costly turnovers and scored two defensive touchdowns in a 42-21 victory against the Broncos on Saturday night.
Concepcion entered the lineup after ECSU's William Davis returned a first-quarter interception 56 yards for a score, and Fayetteville State (0-3) pulled within 14-7 when Antonio Allen caught a 35-yard TD pass on the next possession. The Vikings (2-2) dominated the last 10 minutes of the second quarter, sacking Concepcion three times and posting a trio of touchdowns in rapid succession to claim a 35-7 lead.
NEW ORLEANS — Freshmen Taylor Reuther, Chinedu Echebelem and Moira Kirk combined for 31 kills Monday to lead Xavier University of Louisiana to a 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 women's volleyball victory against Southern at The Barn.
The Gold Nuggets (6-2) extended their school-record win streak to five and tied another XU mark with their fifth home victory of the season. Xavier is 3-0 against SWAC opponents and unbeaten at home.
Reuther had 12 kills — her team-leading sixth match of the season in double figures — Echebelem had 11, and Kirk had eight. Reuther also had two aces and a season-high-tying 17 digs in her fourth kill-dig double-double. Echebelem had a season-best .385 attack percentage with just one error in 26 attempts.

XU senior setter Patrice Hightower, in her first start since an injury in late August, had nine digs and a season-high 34 assists.
Ja'Quincia Willliams had 13 kills for Southern (3-11), and Beonka Savoy and Amber Shelby had seven apiece. Savoy and Kirsten Buggage had 10 digs apiece, and Payton Mitchell had five blocks.
Xavier rallied from deficits of 15-12 in the first set, 12-5 in the second set and 5-1 in the third. Kills by Kerris Crier, Jeanay Butler and Reuther ended the sets.
Xavier used a 7-1 first-set run which included three consecutive Southern attack errors to take the lead for good at 19-16. The Gold Nuggets never led in the second set until a Williams attack error gave them a 19-18 advantage. The Lady Jaguars tied the set at 22, but Kirk's kill put Xavier ahead to stay.
Four Southern attack errors fueled an 8-1 Xavier run in the final set which put the Nuggets ahead to stay at 9-6. Blocks by Williams and Chanda Journet against Reuther closed Xavier's lead to 21-20, but a Kirk kill and two straight Southern attack errors moved the Nuggets to match point.
Xavier outhit Southern .275 to .189 and had advantages of 43-37 in kills and 5-1 in aces. The Lady Jaguars committed 29 total errors, one more than Xavier.
It was the first match between the teams. They'll meet again at 7:30 p.m. next Monday in Baton Rouge. But before then Xavier will travel to Talladega, Ala., for three Gulf Coast Athletic Conference matches. The Nuggets will play Friday against Talladega at 1 p.m. and Edward Waters at 5 p.m., then play Fisk at 8 a.m. Saturday.
WEST GROVE, PA — Coming into the season, Lincoln knew it should be able to count on its defense. Afterall, the Lions brought back just about everybody from a defense that was nationally ranked last season. In turning back visiting Virginia Union 19-10 on Saturday night, Lincoln's defense turned in a stellar performance that keyed the Lions' first CIAA win since topping Livingstone on the road two years ago.
"I'm proud of the job our offense did today,too," said Lions' coach OJ Abanishe. "We came in with what might have looked like a risky game plan, but it was just really a bunch of screens and shorter high percentage passes. But the guys executed very well, and put points on the board."
Up 3-0 in the second, Matthew Coston shook a defender and found himself all alone on the right sideline, and quarterback LaQuan Williams hit him in stride for a 22-yard gain and Lincoln's lone touchdown on the day.

MURFREESBORO, NC -- Different opponent, similar result. Winston-Salem State rolled to its second straight lopsided win Saturday night, 55-24 against Chowan. It followed a 67-16 victory at Virginia Union and although this game wasn't as lopsided, it was just as impressive.
As quarterback Kameron Smith rested on the bench in the waning minutes, his left knee wrapped in ice, he gave a thumbs up to some of the WSSU fans who braved the wet weather.
"We tried to keep it going from our previous game," said Smith, who had career highs for touchdown passes (6) and yards passing (355). "We tried to come out focus and play our game."
The Rams racked up 619 yards and scored all of their points on offense. Against Virginia Union, they scored twice on special teams.
"I give this to the O-line and my coaches," said Smith, who was 17 of 31 passing but did have one interception, his lone mistake.
Atlanta, GA - David Carter rushed for 123 yards and four touchdowns, as Morehouse rolled over Edward Waters College, 49-15. Carter, a junior from Marietta, GA, scored on two 26-yard runs, a four-yard run and a one-yarder, to bring his season total to 363 yards and six touchdowns.
The Maroon Tigers rolled up a season-high 510 yards of offense, in the lopsided win over EWC, which plays in the smaller-college NAIA. Morehouse converted on 8-of-15 third-down chances and 3-of-3 fourth-down chances.
Edward Waters got on the board first with a seven-play, 61-yard drive that was capped off by a 5-yard touchdown run by Antonio Bellamy.
Morehouse bounced right back, with a “scoop and score,” by defensive back Darrius Williams who recovered an Edward Waters fumble at the 9-yard line and sprinted into the end zone. The fumble was forced by defensive end Elijah Anderson, who swatted down an errant lateral by quarterback Brandon Thurman.
Five minutes later, Carter broke several attempted arm tackles and rumbled 26 yards into the end zone, to give Morehouse 14-6 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, Paul Parker extended the Maroon Tiger lead, with a 55-yard touchdown reception from Byron Ingram. Parker, a senior wide receiver, had his best day as a Maroon Tiger, finishing with two catches for 107 yards.
The ensuing extra point attempt was fumbled by holder Joshua Thurston and returned by linebacker Arthur Smith for a safety.
Edward Waters running back Anthony Wallace scored on a 3-yard rush, to bring the halftime score to 20-15.
Bowie, Maryland - The Bowie State football team improved to 3-0 with a 41-14 homecoming win on Saturday against Livingstone College in a CIAA contest.
The Bulldogs had 413 yards of total offense as junior running back Ramano Flowers, a graduate of Largo High, had 82 yards on the ground on 18 carries. Bowie State is now 2-0 in the CIAA while Livingstone fell to 0-3 overall.
“I think it was a good win for the University and hopefully picked up the spirits of the alumni, students, faculty and staff after the tragic loss of one of our students (Dominique Frazier) earlier in the week," Damon Wilson, the head coach for Bowie State, said on the school's athletic website.
Frazier died on campus last week after an apparent arguement with one of her roommates at the school, according to Patch and other media outlets. A moment of silence was observed just prior to kickoff for Frazier, according to a school athletic spokesman.

Frankfort, Kentucky - The Kentucky State football team channeled the spirit of Santa Claus Saturday night against Stillman College at Alumni Stadium. That was the assessment from KSU coach Wayne Dickens after the Thorobreds (2-1) fell 31-29 to the Tigers.
“We gave them a laundry basket full of gifts today,” he said. “You can’t expect to do that against a good team and win. Our guys have to learn that lesson, and when it you learn it, it’s painful.”
The basket of gifts included a 72-yard punt return touchdown by Raphael Amey that was called back for unnecessary roughness and a failed third-down conversion near the end of the first half that gave Stillman the ball back and allowed the Tigers to score.
There was also an uncharacteristic missed extra point by Cade Berryman that forced K-State to go for a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, which it failed to convert. The two failed PAT tries would prove extremely costly in a 2-point defeat.
“I’m afraid when we go back and watch this film, we’ll see a lot of things that we just gave them,” Dickens said. “We decided to play Santa Claus. It’s OK to do that in December, but not now.”
Jackson, Tennessee - The Dragons football team got their first home victory in over two years as they defeated the Skyhawks of Point University 46-18. The Dragons picked up their second win of the season, and activated the ringing of the “Big Blue Bell” into action once again.
It did not take long for the Dragons to score first as the Skyhawks won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball in the second half. Freshman kicker Ryan Bullock connected on a 32- yard field goal at the 11:52 mark for a Dragons 3-0 advantage. This would not be the only score of the first quarter for the Dragons. With 1:12 left on the clock, Freshman Quarterback Alan Ferguson aired a long-range missile to the right corner of the end zone, where he found Greg Moore for a 48-yard touchdown. Ryan Bullock added the extra point for a Dragons 10-0 lead.
The second quarter started the same way the first quarter ended.
Once again the Dynamic-Duo of Ferguson and Moore made reservations in the end zone after a 47 yard hook up for another Dragons touchdown. Bullock connected on his second extra point of the evening putting the Dragons up 17-0.
Not to be denied, the defensive unit was the next to give the overflow crowd at Lane Field something to cheer about. Jack Howard zeroed in on the Skyhawk Quarterback, creating a fumble that allowed teammate Tyren Futch to collect the pigskin and rumble 72 yards to pay dirt. Ryan Bullock connected once again on the extra point and increased the Dragons'lead to 24-0.
The Skyhawks put together a five minute drive to the end zone as QB Michael Bloodser was able to enter pay dirt from one yard out for the touchdown. The Skyhawk's attempt for a 2 point conversion resulted in a 92-yard safety for the Dragons. The pass attempt for the conversion was intercepted by the Dragons Paris Hopper, and the race to the end zone was on. After the speedy free-safety cleared his last obstacle, it was smooth sailing for the 92-yard return and a 26-6 Dragons half-time lead.
After each team had one possession in the first seven minutes of the third quarter, Dragon Damien Harris intercepted the Skyhawks' Quarterback pass giving the Dragons great field position at the Skyhawks 46-yard line. Seven plays later, Darren Henry shot up the middle for a five-yard run to the end zone for a touchdown. Ryan Bullock added another extra point and increased the Dragons' lead to 33-6.
After getting a nice run back on the kick-off by Darion Sneed, the Skyhawks moved the ball to the Dragons' 26-yard line. The next play from scrimmage allowed Paris Hopper to step in front of the Skyhawks' receiver and dash for what would seem to be a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown. A penalty against the Dragons before the interception negated the outstanding return and placed the ball at the 11-yard line.
Michael Bloodser connected with Brand Lampkin on an 11-yard pass, completing a five-play 66 yard drive for the Skyhawks' second touchdown of the evening at the 4:04 mark in the third quarter. The two-point conversion failed as the pass was incomplete and the Dragons' lead was reduced to 33-12.
A quick offensive possession by the Dragons, gave the ball back to the Skyhawks after a bad snap sailed over Punter Ryan Bullock's head. The Skyhawks looked to be ready to put another drive together before Kedric Hooks intercepted the Quarterback pass for a 58-yard return and a Dragons touchdown. Ryan Bullock connected with his fifth extra point of the evening and increased the Dragons' lead to 40-12 going into the fourth quarter.
Bullock added two additional field goals (23 & 36 Yards) in the fourth quarter before the Skyhawks scored their third touchdown of the evening with nine seconds left in the game for a final 46-18 Dragons Victory.
The Dragons look to continue the winning streak at home on September 24 as they host the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College. Kick-Off is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.

Carrollton, GA - The first win can be the hardest, and the University of West Georgia football team took care of win No. 1 on the 2011 campaign with a 23-20 triumph over Miles College on Thursday evening at University Stadium.
The Wolves (1-1) held on against a late surge from the Golden Bears (1-2) for what UWG coach Daryl Dickey hopes is the first win of many this fall.
“It will be a lot easier to go to work and coach with a win under your belt. There’s no question about that. We’ve got to develop a habit of winning, and you can’t do that unless you start winning. I’m proud of our kids [Thursday]. They fought hard and found a way to stretch it out at the end with enough cushion that we were going to win the ball game,” Dickey said.
The first win was especially sweet for junior quarterback Emmanuel Taylor, who was playing his first game at University Stadium.
Houston, TX - Texas Southern handled Texas College with ease to earn its first win, beating the NAIA program 49-6 Saturday night at Butler Stadium.
The Tigers (1-1) jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first half and piled on more from there.
TSU torched Texas College's defense for 503 yards. Quarterback Riko Smalls filled in admirably for injured starter Dantavious Parker, throwing for 290 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for a score.
Montgomery, AL - Nick Andrews caught nine passes for a career-high 148 yards and two touchdowns and Kejuan Riley made two pivotal interceptions as Alabama State defeated Grambling State 31-17 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game at Cramton Bowl.
Andrews' 15-yard touchdown catch from QB Greg Jenkins in the fourth quarter broke a 10-10 tie as the Hornets (2-1 overall, 2-0 SWAC) scored 21 points in a 2:30 span to pull away from Grambling State (1-2, 1-1).
“This was a great win for our team,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “It was exciting. We knew it would be a pivotal game and we talked to them about it. These guys are buying into the vision and playing hard.”
Andrews' second touchdown of the night continued his ascent up the ASU receiving charts. Andrews now has 22 touchdown receptions, moving him to third all time, as he surpassed William Evans and Damon Hodge (each with 21).
Jenkins came off the bench in the second half, completing seven of 12 passes for 59 yards and one touchdown. Jenkins also rushed for a 16-yard touchdown two plays after the first of Riley's two interceptions.
“This was a great win for us as a program,” Andrews said. “The fans came out strong, they were great. We started off slow in the first half, but kept the ball moving all night. I just think the execution improved in the second half and we were able to come away with the victory.”
Alabama State rolled up 399 yards total offense, limiting Grambling to 177 yards. GSU quarterback D.J. Williams completed nine of 22 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns, both to Mario Louis, who caught four passes for 46 yards.
“It was a huge night for us,” Riley said. “We had a good plan, did what our coaches instructed and played hard. We knew we had to get off the field, make plays for offense and put them in position to make plays and win the ball game.”
Tied at 10-10 early in the third quarter, Barlow inserted Jenkins in at quarterback, who did not start after suffering a hip injury at Eastern Michigan last week.
“Jenkins is our guy,” Barlow said. “We love Dominguez; he's a good player for us and it's good to have an option like Dominguez. We're excited that we could have Jenkins go in. We just wanted to make sure he was ok and he could protect himself. Obviously he was able to do that, we decided to go with him and he performed well.”
The win by Alabama State was the first over Grambling since 2006 and the first in Montgomery since 1997.
“Grambling was the team that was picked to win the league. We wanted to see how we measured up. It was the same attitude we had against Eastern Michigan, and the same attitude we had against these guys. We knew it was going to be a fight. We were (7-25) against them, so we haven't had a lot of success against them. Obviously, this does something for these guys' psyche to dominate the way that we did.”
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas- The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff's victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers can simply be described as amazing. The Golden Lions battling through several first half miscues to steal a victory on the road against a Panthers team looking to keep their title aspirations alive in what looks to be a SWAC race that will go down until the final week of conference play.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff fell behind 19-7 going into intermission after a first half in which the Golden Lions gave up three safeties triggered by the injury of long snapper Patrick Wray.
Down by twelve to start the first half the Golden Lions cut into the deficit after a 16-yard Desmond Beverly touchdown reception from Ben Anderson at the 11:33 mark of the third quarter.
The Panthers would counter with two consecutive scores of their own scoring on a 26- yard Chris Barrick field goal followed by a three yard touchdown pass by Jerry Lovelocke to Idowu Olatunde giving Prairie View its largest lead of the contest at 29-14 late in the third quarter.
Down by fifteen points with their backs against the wall the Golden Lions dug deep virtually dominating the game on both sides of the ball from that point.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff's defense pitched a shut-out in the second half while the offense under the direction of Anderson kept the Panthers defense on their toes with big conversions and timely plays.
UAPB's amazing comeback quest began at the start of the fourth quarter when Anderson found Beverly for an 18-yard TD pass marking the quarterback-wide receiver combinations' second touchdown strike of the game.
From that point the offensive front of the Golden Lions took over the game imposing their will on a tired and over matched Panthers' front seven while opening up huge holes for Arkansas-Pine Bluff's ground attack. Running back Stephen Jones capped of a 12 play 76 yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run at the 7:27 mark of the fourth quarter.
Still down by two-points the Golden Lions coaching staff opted to go for two in an attempt to tie the game. After a fumbled snap in the shotgun formation Anderson was able to recover the snap and run it in from three yards out bringing the Golden Lions fans at Blackshear Stadium to their feet as UAPB tied the game at 29 all in the fourth quarter.
On the ensuing Panthers possession the Golden Lions defense perhaps came up with their biggest play of the game as Jarvis Webb intercepted a Lovelocke pass attempt setting the offense up with good field possession with 3:00 remaining on the game clock.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff methodically drove the ball down into the Panthers red zone highlighted by a running game that would not be denied. Jones punched in the final score of the game with 24 seconds left in to play giving the Golden Lions their first lead of the contest at 36-29 after a successful Chris Ewald extra point. The game clinching touchdown run by Jones' marked his third TD rush of the game.
The defense held the Panthers scoreless on their final possession of the game as a desperation Lovelocke pass into the end zone was batted down by the UAPB secondary.
The win marked head coach Monte Coleman's first victory over Prairie View A&M since taking over UAPB's football program. It was also the first Golden Lions win over the Panthers since 2007.
'Our players never gave up,” said UAPB head coach Monte Coleman. “We fell behind early in the game but we never lost focus. At halftime we told our players to execute and stick with the game plan. In the second half our defense, running game, and the composure of Ben Anderson helped us pull out this victory.”
The Golden Lions will travel to St. Louis this weekend to participate in the Gateway Classic where they will face Clark-Atlanta in non-conference action. Kick-off is set for 3:00 pm at the Edward Jones Dome.
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - With the season on the verge of unraveling after back-to-back disappointing losses, Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones challenged his team leading up to Saturday's game against Tuskegee.
Fortunately, the Bulldogs' defense answered it.
Inside linebacker Willie Fuller had a career-high 12 tackles and got plenty of help from A&M's much-maligned defensive line, which came up with a huge fourth-down stop early in the fourth quarter, to give the Bulldogs a much-needed 21-6 victory over Tuskegee in the second annual Louis Crews Classic before an announced crowd of 18,629 at Louis Crews Stadium.
LORMAN, MS — It was a tale of two halves for the Alcorn State offense Saturday night, but the defense stayed solid throughout and powered the Braves to their first victory of the season.
The Braves’ 39-14 win over Mississippi Valley State was a welcome site for first-year head coach Melvin Spears. The Braves dropped their first two SWAC games of the season prior to beating the Delta Devils Saturday night.
“(The win is) huge. Anytime you are 0-2, and you’ve been anemic for 17 years in winning a championship, and you haven’t won a whole bunch of games around here (it’s important). We just needed a win,” Spears said.
The Alcorn defense held the Delta Devils to just 14 points on 331 yards of total offense. The Braves’ defense was also opportunistic and forced three Mississippi Valley State turnovers.

ALBANY, GA — ALBANY — The Valdosta State Blazers defeated sixth-ranked Albany State 30-27 on Saturday night to stay undefeated on the season. Just like the first two games, the Blazers (3-0) won the game inside the minute, as senior safety Harrison Dreiling intercepted a Stan Jennings pass to give VSU the win over the Golden Rams.
“Beating anyone in your state that you have an opportunity to play is going to be huge,” Valdosta State head coach David Dean said.
With the score tied 27-27 late in the fourth quarter, VSU kicker Daniel Andersen drilled a 43-yard field goal, giving VSU a slim three-point lead. Following Andersen’s field goal, VSU was forced to make back-to-back defensive stands, including the final drive, which ended with Dreiling’s interception.
MURRAY, Ky. — In Tennessee State's first two games, the Tigers gave up a combined 600 passing yards. Against Murray State on Saturday, the Tigers defense also had trouble stopping the Racers’ passing attack, losing 58-27 in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams at Roy Stewart Stadium.
Racer quarterback Casey Brockman threw for a school-record 600 yards and seven touchdowns, going 47-of-67. He broke his previous single-game records for passing yards (570), attempts (58) and completions (41). He also tied the record for touchdowns in a game.
Racers’ receiver Patrick Robertson contributed to Brockman’s record-setting day, hauling in seven catches for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Brockman tied the conference touchdown mark on Robertson’s third score.
The Football Championship Subdivision record for most passes completed in a game is 57. The FCS record for passing yards in a game is 624 and passing touchdowns in a game is 9. The Racers had 630 passing yards total.
BOONE, N.C. - No. 3 Appalachian State University scored on five of its first seven possessions to grab a 27-0 halftime lead and never looked back en route to a 41-6 win over visiting Savannah State on Saturday evening at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Appalachian (2-1) forced five punts and a turnover on Savannah State’s six first-half possessions and ASU’s offense countered with three touchdowns and two field goals before the break to grab the all-but-insurmountable 27-point advantage at the break.
For the second week in a row, Appalachian made its opponent pay for the decision to defer after winning the opening coin toss. Savannah State (0-3) won the toss but elected to give the ball to the Mountaineers, who marched 68 yards in seven plays and took the lead for good just 2:40 into the ballgame on a two-yard touchdown run by Travaris Cadet.
After ASU tacked on a 41-yard field goal by Sam Martin to make it 10-0, the momentum shifted entirely to the Mountaineers early in the second period, thanks to the play of true freshman defensive end James Robinson. Thanks to four completions by starting quarterback Alfred Defillipis, SSU drove all the way to the Appalachian 23 yard line and was threatening to cut into the Apps’ 10-point lead when Robinson sacked Defillipis on consecutive plays to push the Tigers out of scoring position and force a punt. The back-to-back bone-crushing sacks also knocked Defillipis, who had completed 8-of-13 passes for 81 yards in the first quarter, out of the ballgame.
The Mountaineers went on to score on its final three possessions of the first half, first on a 48-yard touchdown pass from DeAndre Presley to Brian Quick, then on a two-yard scoring dive by Presley and finally on a 51-yard field goal by Martin on the final play of the opening half.
An interception and 14-yard return by sophomore Rodger Walker set up a three-yard touchdown run by Steven Miller that stretched Appalachian’s lead to 34-0 and effectively ended the day for the Mountaineers’ starters less than 10 minutes into the second half. SSU ended ASU’s hopes for its first shutout in more than five years when backup quarterback Antonio Bostick scored on a 10-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and Mountaineer backup signal-caller Jamal Jackson closed out the scoring with a 16-yard touchdown jaunt with just over two minutes to go.
Appalachian outgained Savannah State by a 283-97 margin in the first half and 420-285 for the ballgame. Combined with last Saturday’s 58-6 rout over North Carolina A&T, the Mountaineers have held consecutive opponents to fewer than 10 points for the first time in 13 years.
Presley highlighted the dominating performance on offense by completing 11-of-17 passes without an interception for 186 yards and a touchdown in less than three quarters of work. He also ran for 21 yards and a score and, in the process, became only the seventh player in ASU history with 5,000 yards of total offense in his career (5,125).
Five of Presley’s 11 completions were hauled in by Quick, who racked up 81 yards and moved into sole possession of second place all-time at ASU with his 24th career touchdown reception. He needs just one more touchdown catch to match the 43-year old school record of 25, set by Bob Agle from 1965-68.
Miller led ASU with 60 rushing yards on just nine carries, including a highlight-reel-worthy 30-yard gain that set up his three-yard touchdown run. Cedric Baker Boney added 58 yards on eight carries (7.2-yard averaged) and Terrence McLean chipped in with 48 yards on just five rushes (9.6 avg.) to pace the Mountaineers’ 234-yard rushing attack.
Conversely, Appalachian’s defense limited Savannah State to just 41 yards on the ground, including only four in the first half. The Mountaineers tormented the Tigers in the backfield throughout the evening, finishing with 10 tackles for loss and six sacks.
Robinson led the charge with two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble. Linebacker Brandon Grier added 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack while true freshman Ronald Blair also had 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage and was in on a sack. Walker, safety Troy Sanders and linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough paced the Mountaineers with six tackles apiece.
Bostick completed 15-of-33 passes for 136 yards and ran 11 times for 37 yards for Savannah State while SSU’s Vaughn Cornelia led all players with 11 tackles.
After three non-conference games to open the season, the Mountaineers begin Southern Conference play next Saturday with a stern test versus No. 14 Chattanooga (2-1). Kickoff for the SoCon battle is set for 3:30 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
NOTES: Appalachian has held back-to-back opponents to fewer than 10 points for the first time since 51-0 and 19-0 wins over VMI and Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 14 and Nov. 21, 1998 ... the six points allowed by ASU matches last week’s 58-6 win over N.C. NEWARK, DE — The game might be called the Route 1 Rivalry on paper, but on Tubby Raymond field Saturday night, the contest between the University of Delaware and Delaware State University wasn’t much of a game.
The Blue Hens scored impressively on their first three drives, marching 80 yards on five plays, 96 on 14, and 58 on eight. Conversely, the Hornets went three-and-out on their first two drives, threw an interception on the second play of its third, and then fumbled a ball that the Hens returned for a 32-yard touchdown on its fourth.
The Blue Hens got 13 first downs before the Hornets picked up their first. It was 28-0 before the UD students finished filing into their seats.
Baton Rouge, LA - Saturday night inside A.W. Mumford Stadium, at the end of a wild, intense, energetic college football game between two old rivals, Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault took a knee.
Then he walked toward the visitors sideline, waving his arms in triumph. His team had survived and escaped with a 28-24 victory over Southern.
Moments later, near the 35-yard line, Jaguars senior safety Demetric Rogers shuffled toward the home sideline, peeling off his uniform, his eyes transfixed on the grass. He was heartbroken.
For his team, a promising second half had come and gone. Southern had chances to score more points, to hold off JSU, to pull out an upset victory. In the end, however, the Jaguars frittered too many of them away. The Tigers made them pay.
BLOOMINGTON, IND. - Both quarterback Derrick Wiley and wide receiver Tyler McDonald had career games for South Carolina State.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, so did Indiana counterparts quarterback Edward Wright-Baker and wide receiver Duwyche Wilson. The Hoosiers' duo helped spark a passing attack which posted 300 of the team's 569 total yards in the air in Saturday's victory.
Wright-Baker finished 21-27 for 273 yards and two touchdowns, one caught by Wilson who had six receptions for 101 yards. The Hoosiers also got a career game from freshman D'Angelo Roberts who rushed for 101 yards and a score.
Indiana (1-2) led as many as 17 points, but the Bulldogs remained competitive through the entire game...
