Running game keying Tiger SSU offense

SAVANNAH, Georgia -- With three or four freshmen starting in any given game, the young offensive line of Savannah State has had to grow up fast.

And they have, paving the way for the Tiger’s stable of running backs and allowing the offense to account for 377 rushing yards in SSU’s last two contests.

That’s important, since the Tigers (1-4, 1-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) have been without projected starting quarterback Tino Smith Jr. all season, and a lot of what SSU likes to do on offense depends on establishing the run.

“The running game is what gets the offense going,” said senior running back Richard Williams. “It really goes on the linemen. They’ve improved tenfold. Those guys go hard every day. I’ve got all the faith in them.”

Williams and sophomore Josh Berry have been the two primary ball carriers in the past two games for the Tigers.
