JACKSON, Mississippi -- Wayne Brent didn't want to leave Jackson State's home court with a loss on Saturday, but Texas Southern left him no choice.
TSU, the defending SWAC champion, led by as many as 20 points in the second half, and held off a frantic JSU rally to earn a 71-65 victory at the Lee E. Williams AAC on Saturday night.
Jackson State (8-10, 3-2 SWAC) crept to within four points with 1:03 remaining, but Texas Southern's Malcolm Riley pulled down a clutch offensive rebound during the ensuing possession, which eventually led to a Christ Thomas layup to put a stop to the bleeding.
The win allowed Texas Southern (5-11, 4-0) to remain in first place in the conference standings and was the first by a road team at Jackson State this season.
