DAYTONA BEACH -- Are you ready for some national exposure? ESPN's rowdy friends from Bethune-Cookman are.
The university's Marching Wildcats drumline, already familiar with the sports network's spotlight, is slated to open the 2011 season of Monday Night Football tomorrow evening with a thumping, swaggering montage that shook the school's band building Saturday.
"Believe me, the kids don't take it lightly," the band's director, Donovan Wells, said outside. "You don't turn down these opportunities."
The ESPN crew spent more than four hours working Saturday morning, and was considering coming back to film more after the band's regular football show Saturday afternoon. The package still has to be edited and mixed in time for Week 1's 7 p.m. matchup between the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins.

S.C. State knocks off Bethune-Cookman
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It was about as close as you could get to a heavyweight championship fight taking place on a football field Saturday at Municipal Stadium.
For 3-1/2 quarters, South Carolina State took Bethune-Cookman's best offensive shots and were out-pointed both on the scoreboard and the statistics department. Yet the defense enabled the Bulldogs to maintain a puncher's chance late in the nationally televised contest.
With S.C. State holding a one-point lead with four minutes left, the Wildcats prepared to land the knockout punch. Instead, the Bulldogs countered with a lethal blow in the form of Dominique Ellis' 55-yard interception return for a touchdown which sealed a 26-18 victory over Bethune-Cookman in a matchup of two of last year's three co-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions.
"I actually knew it was coming," Ellis said. "They had ran it on me earlier. I played it bad. I knew from the whole jump. I knew it! I knew it from film study. (Defensive coordinator Mike Adams) had us ready."

Bulldogs pull past Wildcats in 4th quarter to win, 26-18
DAYTONA BEACH -- Brian Jenkins picked up a stat sheet and read the numbers out loud again and again. "We had 397 total yards. They had 211," Bethune-Cookman's coach said. "We had 245 passing. They had 54." If was as if he was trying to make sense of it all.
B-CU dominated the stat sheet but lost the battle as South Carolina State relied on special teams and defense to rally past the Wildcats 26-18 in a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday before a near-capacity crowd of 9,463 at Municipal Stadium.
The Wildcats, normally as adept at holding onto the ball as they are at knocking it away from their opponents, had five turnovers. The big one was Dominique Ellis's 55-yard interception return for a touchdowns with 4 minutes left to give the Bulldogs a 26-18 lead.
B-CU quarterback Jamarr Robinson, who threw three of his four interceptions in the second half, was picked off a final time with 25 seconds left in the game.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Coaches never forget big games. And they never forget any and every small detail of big losses.
In the moments immediately after such occasions, it's hard to hide the honest emotions, which explains why Brian Jenkins gave a quick but definitive jab to the makeshift table in front of him as he worked through his post-game press conference Saturday night.
"Two plays . . . two plays," Jenkins said just before delivering a blow to the table.
He was thinking back to a pair of late-game punt returns his team gave up -- two returns brought about by missed assignments, Jenkins said. Jenkins, a stickler for detail, isn't high on missed assignments. When they lead to touchdowns, which lead to defeat, what you get is a head coach who, through 14 games at Bethune-Cookman, has never been this frustrated after a game.

XU Nuggets to play exhibition at LSU, 9 games vs. NAIA qualifiers
Gold Nuggets Head Coach Bo Browder (Photo credit: XULA Athletics) |
On Friday Browder announced the schedule, which includes nine games against qualifiers for last season's NAIA National Championships. Five of those teams won 27 or more games. Six won regular-season conference or divisional championships and five won conference tournaments.
The Gold Nuggets' first contest will be a Nov. 2 exhibition at LSU — their first meeting with an SEC opponent — then they'll open the regular season two days later at The Barn against NAIA Division II tournament qualifier Florida Memorial.
The other NAIA D-II tourney qualifiers on the schedule are:
• Indiana Wesleyan — Nov. 11 in the Elswick Classic at Georgetown, Ky.
• Holy Names — Nov. 25 on the second and final day of the Xavier Classic.
• Sterling — Dec. 21 in Las Vegas.
Xavier will play five games against NAIA D-I tourney qualifiers:
• Langston — Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving night) at the Xavier Classic.
• Shorter — Dec. 3 at The Barn and Jan. 4 at Shorter.
• Oklahoma City — Dec. 20 in Las Vegas. The Stars eliminated Xavier in the second round of nationals last season.
• Southern Polytechnic — Jan. 3 at Southern Poly.
Xavier, 27-7 last season and two-time defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament champion, will play its first GCAC game Jan. 7 in Little Rock, Ark., against first-year member Philander Smith. The conference will employ its traditional double round-robin scheduling after an unbalanced league schedule last season. Second-year member Edward Waters and Jacksonville, Fla., will play host to the GCAC Tournament for the second straight year.
In addition to LSU, Xavier's first-time opponents are Indiana Wesleyan, Georgetown (Ky.), Shorter, Southern Polytechnic and second-year GCAC member Fisk.
The schedule includes the annual GCAC home-and-away matchups with city rivals SUNO and Dillard — Dillard will visit Xavier on Jan. 28 for the Crosstown Classic, part of Rush/Nuggets Alumni Weekend — and the Nuggets will visit city rival and 20-game winner Loyola on Dec. 17.
The GCAC will crown a regular-season and tournament champion, and the latter will receive an automatic bid to nationals. But this season's NAIA tournament will be played in Frankfort, Ky., after 22 consecutive years in Jackson, Tenn. Xavier qualified for nationals 15 of the past 17 seasons — 10 of 12 times since Browder became head coach.
"I have another great group of young ladies this season," Browder said, "and we're working hard to get ready for all the challenges this schedule will give us."

WSSU storms past Virginia Union 67-16
Coach Connell Maynor |
Quarterback Kameron Smith of the Rams opened the game with six straight passes. But when he wasn't moving the offense through the air, he handed off to running back Nic Cooper. Smith completed 15 of 28 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns. Cooper had his second straight 100-yard game rushing with 113 yards on 12 carries, scoring two touchdowns.
The Rams (2-0) had just a 20-3 lead at halftime, but it turned into a laugher in the second half.
"I wanted triple digits," said center Markus Lawrence, who helped the Rams rack up 493 yards of offense. "If they weren't ready to play, that's their fault. We were ready to play."

DSU capitalizes on fumble for comeback win
DOVER, DE -- Delaware State was handed the gift of life as a driving rainstorm pounded Alumni Stadium in the closing minutes of the Hornets' home opener against Shaw University on Saturday night.
With 49 seconds remaining, the Bears handed the football to James Langford, who was hit immediately by DSU defensive lineman Olusegun Ayanbiola, who forced a fumble and recovered it at Shaw's 12-yard line.
Two plays later, with the rain still dripping in his eyes, Delaware State quarterback Nick Elko launched a 12-yard pass to Darius Jackson, who caught it for the game-winning touchdown in the right-corner of the end zone as the Hornets capped an improbable 31-27 comeback victory over Shaw in a nonconference game.
"I was very surprised," DSU middle linebacker Brandon Harvey said. "I actually asked the ref, 'Are they going to down the football?' And he said, 'No.' I said, 'OK, we're going to cause a turnover.'"

Shaw Suffers Fourth-Quarter Collapse - Loses to DSU 31-27
Shaw played three strong quarters against Division I Delaware State on Saturday, but allowed the Hornets to swarm in the fourth - giving up 22 last period points, including a last-minute touchdown that sent the Bears home with a 31-27 loss.
With the loss, the Bears drop to 0-2 while the Hornets improve to 2-0 on the season.
With 1:01 left on the clock, DSU lined up for a field goal that would have tied the game at 27. In a driving rain and into a strong wind, Mitchell Ward's attempt went wide right and the Bears got the ball at their own 20.
After a loss of five on a delay of game penalty, James Langford got the handoff, but Quentin Ferguson forced a fumble, giving the Hornets the ball 13 yards from the end zone. Two plays later, Nick Elko covered that ground with a 13-yard strike to Darius Jackson - giving the Hornets the win.

Bring On Valdosta State: ASU Rams bounce Wingate
ALBANY, GA -- Wingate quarterback Cody Haffly walked into the Albany State University Coliseum on Saturday evening as one of the best quarterbacks in Division II. He walked off the field in the shadow of Albany State's Stanley Jennings.
Jennings threw for four touchdowns and 307 yards as the seventh-ranked Rams won their home opener against No. 23 Wingate, 49-28.
"Quarterback Stanley Jennings is the best in the nation to me," said ASU receiver Ronnie Tubbs, who had three touchdowns and 136 yards receiving in the win. "We made a huge statement (Saturday night), and from here on out we have to."
ASU's statement win, which improved the Rams to 2-0 and dropped the Bulldogs to 0-2, comes against a Wingate team that nearly knocked off No. 14 Valdosta State last week. Valdosta State -- ASU's opponent next Saturday -- defeated Wingate in double overtime and then stayed unbeaten Saturday with a 24-17 win against Newberry.

Prairie View tops rival TSU 37-34 on late field goal

Central State overwhelmed by N.C. Central, 42-3, in Cleveland Classic
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Central State can't afford many things while it tries to rebuild a once dominant football program. The school in Wilberforce, Ohio is besieged by financial woes, with only 13 scholarships for its 70-man squad.
The absence of one of those players on Saturday created a void the Marauders were never able to fill. Without injured starting quarterback Jeffrey Brooks, Central State could not get on track, or into the end zone, as it fell, 42-3, to North Carolina Central at the Cleveland Classic at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The Marauders (0-2) were held to 208 total yards of offense, 89 in the first half.
"It always hurts when your three-year starter is out," said Central State coach E.J. Junior about Brooks. "Jeff brings leadership. He knows the offense. He's a competitor. He would've done better, but he would've been under the same fire from North Carolina Central's defensive line."

N.C. Central bounces back
CLEVELAND -- N.C. Central coach Henry Frazier III had expected his Eagles to perform better Saturday than they did a week earlier in a 48-0 loss to Rutgers. They did not disappoint Frazier.
For the Eagles, all things considered, played as their coach had hoped. His defenders swarmed to the ball, his offense shoved the Central State defense up and down the football field and his Eagles dominated the Marauders en route to a 42-3 win in the 2011 Cleveland Classic. His team's performance, however, was hardly spotless.
"We still were a little sloppy," said Frazier, in his first season at NCCU. "We still committed a lot of penalties, and we had six or seven dropped passes." Perhaps still unnerved by the Rutgers loss, his Eagles dropped three passes in their first two possessions. Those drops, which led to punts, cost them close to 100 yards of offense and ruined opportunities to grab a quick lead.

Southern Heritage Classic: Jackson State rallies to win shootout over Tennessee State
JSU's Therriault MVP after throwing three TDs
Memphis, TN - The way Tennessee State and Jackson State were marching up and down the field in the first half of Saturday’s Southern Heritage Classic, JSU coach Rick Comegy was ready to pull out the Dramamine.
Fortunately, the Tigers defense settled down in the second half and JSU managed to erase a 24-21 halftime deficit to beat TSU, 35-29, in front of 43,532 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. “What a see-saw,” Comegy said. “I think I was getting motion sickness it was so up and down. I’m glad we came out with the win.”
The win is JSU’s (2-0) second straight over TSU after dropping the previous seven meetings. Like most of their meetings, this one came down to the wire. JSU led 28-26 and was hoping to take some time off the clock when it took over from its own 11 with 6:34 to play. But a 17-yard pass from Casey Therriault to Rico Richardson gave the Tigers some breathing room.
A 22-yard strike to Keenan Tillman put the Tigers in TSU territory at the 41. That set up a 39-yard run by running back Tommy Gooden, who was tripped up at the 2-yard line.

Richardson's 21-yard touchdown pass from scrambling quarterback Casey Therriault in the final minutes sealed Jackson State's 35-29 win over Tennessee on Saturday night.
The touchdown toss gave JSU a nine-point advantage with 2 minutes, 4 seconds left and capped quite an offensive performance from a unit that struggled just last week against tiny Concordia College.
Behind a rebuilt offensive line - featuring two new starters - Therriault threw for 337 yards and three scores, and the Tigers had two running backs, Tommy Gooden and B.J. Lee, break 65 yards as they rolled up a whopping 477 yards of offense.

"Classic" Not Just A Game
Memphis, TN - Kick off to the 22nd annual Southern Heritage Classic comes later in the evening but the festivities started long before the teams ever hit the field. It all started with the folks lined up along Park Avenue in Orange Mound. People flooded the streets this weekend taking in the sights and sounds of the Classic parade.
Mamie Harmon said, "I come every year. I owned a house on Dunmoore. I lived over there for 7 years. I watched the parade. Now I live over here and I've been here 4 years and I made every parade."
They come to see the dancers, the high stepping bands including the show stopping Sonic Boom band from Jackson State University and the Aristocrat of bands from Tennessee State University. For the crowd attending, it's a sneak peek of the battle of the bands they hope to see later on the football field. However, the parade is proof the weekend is more than just about the game.
The Tennessee State University Aristocrat of Bands visited the LeBonheur Children's Hospital of Memphis Tennnessee during their Southern Heritage Classic weekend. The annual visit gives the children inspiration and motivation on Friday afternoon, while allowing the students in the band the opportunity to perform music and give personal time and cheer to the children, before playing in Saturday's parade and football game. Howard Bison rally to defeat Morehouse, 30-27
Washington, D.C. - Facing a two-possession deficit early in the second half, the Howard football team stormed back with three consecutive touchdowns before clinging to a 30-27 victory over Morehouse on Saturday in the inaugural Nation’s Football Classic in front of 18,409 at RFK Stadium.
Freshman quarterback Greg McGhee threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Willie Carter with 12 minutes 54 seconds left in the game, giving the Bison a 23-20 lead. Shortly after tailback Charles Brice scored on a 17-yard run for a 30-20 cushion six minutes later, Howard’s first win appeared certain.
But Brice fumbled and Morehouse safety Latavius Watts scooped up the ball and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown with 2:20 to play. Howard recovered the ensuing onside kick, but the Tigers got it back and used a 57-yard pass from quarterback Byron Ingram to wide receiver Derrick Hector to get to the Howard 25 with 17 seconds left.

Howard recovered the ensuing onside kick, but the Tigers got it back and used a 57-yard pass from quarterback Byron Ingram to wide receiver Derrick Hector to get to the Howard 25 with 17 seconds left.

Eastern Michigan beats Alabama State Hornets 14-7
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Dominique Sherrer ran for a touchdown and Eastern Michigan piled up 336 rushing yards on the way to a 14-7 victory over Alabama State on Saturday.
Sherrer finished with 111 yards on 16 carries, while Javonti Greene ran 22 times for 146 yards for the Eagles (2-0), who held Alabama State of the FCS to minus-13 yards rushing. Eagles quarterback Alex Gillett ran for 74 yards -- including a 58-yard run that set up Sherrer's 6-yard score in the third quarter -- and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Nick Olds for the game's only first-half points.
The Hornets offense moved the ball often into Eagles' territory but could score just once time in five drives. The Hornets (1-1) got on the board on Devin Dominguez's 22-yard pass to T.C. McWilliams. Defensively, ASU allowed just two scoring drives and made two takeaways.

Eastern Rushing Offense Rolls in 14-7 Win
YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University football team combined a strong rushing game with a stingy defensive effort to record a 14-7 win over a visiting Alabama State University team here Saturday afternoon, Sept.10, in Rynearson Stadium.
The victory gave Head Coach Ron English's Eagles a perfect 2-0 record to start the season, the first time since the 1989 campaign that an EMU football squad won its first two games to start a season.
The EMU rushing game was high energy for the second week in a row with both senior tailback Dominique Sherrer (Cincinnati, Ohio-Colerain) and sophomore tailback Javonti Greene (West Palm Beach, Fla.-Royal Palm Beach) each going over the century mark with Greene gaining 146 yards on 22 rushes and Sherrer adding 111 yards on 16 rushes.
In addition to the two tailbacks, junior quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) added 74 yards rushing on eight carries. Gillett completed 7-of-19 passes for 61 yards and one score.
Both Sherrer and Greene also had 100-plus yards yards last weekend, Sept. 4, in EMU's season-opening win over Howard University.

Tuskegee struggles, falls to Langston 33-19
TUSKEGEE -- After one game, Tuskegee's quarterback situation is back to unsettled. Coach Willie Slater said the Golden Tigers will re-evaluate their quarterback decision after Tuskegee struggled in a 33-19 season-opening loss to Langston on Saturday.
"We have some work to do at quarterback," Slater said. "I'll say it like that. We'll look at film and see what really happened, then we'll decide."
Junior Jeremy Williams played the first half and was 9-for-16 for 144 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Sophomore Terry Bradden played the second half and finished 6-of-19 for 43 yards.
"It's a competition, and I have faith in both of them," receiver Wayne Williams said. "Both can throw the ball and run the ball. We'll try to see who can manage the game better. That's the key."

Langston is 2-0 under first-year coach Mickey Joseph. The Lions stunned Tuskegee (Ala.) 33-19 in its home opener Saturday.
Tailback Carlos Ross ran for 115 yards on 20 carries for Langston, which beat an NCAA Division II program that has won four of the last five Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. Langston quarterback Darrion Lewis threw two interceptions, but those were negated by 149 yards and two TDs. He completed 11 of 17 attempts.
Langston, which plays its first-five games on the road, will play Missouri Western in St. Joseph at 11 a.m. next Saturday.
Last week, the Lions defeated NCAA Division I, University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions in the season opener in Little Rock, Arkansas. Terrance Walker returned a fumble five yards for a touchdown to lead an opportunistic Langston defense as they defeated UAPB 19-12. Walker's score gave Langston a 16-0 lead 14 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Hawkins knows Southern University has to get back up
Baton Rouge, LA - What was it that Muhammad Ali, Vince Lombardi and Rocky Balboa used to say? They each phrased it a little differently, but the line always went something like this: There’s no shame in getting knocked down. The shame comes when you don’t get back up.
Charles Hawkins knew that. Southern University’s junior wide receiver has known it for a while now. So last weekend, after Tennessee State safety Joseph Wylie leveled him for a second time in the Jaguars’ ugly season-opening loss, leaving Hawkins on the ground with stabbing pains in his chest, rib cage and back, the young wideout knew the deal.
Eventually, he had to get back up. And eventually, he got back in the game.
At 6 p.m. Saturday in A.W. Mumford Stadium, when the Jaguars (0-1) open Southwestern Athletic Conference play against Alabama A&M (0-1), they’ll try to do the same.

IT'S SHOWTIME: Grambling, ULM game fraught with expectations
Monroe, LA - Grambling coach Doug Williams said he's not a fan of playing this game. ULM coach Todd Berry said he and his team are excited to play, but acknowleged the pressures that the program and the university are under to put on a good "event."
These are just some of the questions that are surrounding Grambling's and ULM's second meeting in school history.
"We really don't have an advantage going to ULM," Williams said. "Eddie Robinson felt like he never had anything to gain by playing Louisiana Tech, (ULM) or LSU, and that's when we could compete with anybody in the country. ULM is an (FBS) school now with more scholarships."
But with all the hullabaloo of game week now over, it comes down to Saturday's 6 p.m. kickoff in Malone Stadium.

Xavier Nuggets sweep at Alcorn State for first road win of season
LORMAN, Miss. — Xavier University of Louisiana's women's volleyball team won 25-16, 25-14, 25-21 Friday at Alcorn State for its second three-set victory in as many days and first road victory of the season.
"We did great," Xavier coach Christabell Hamilton said. "I gave our players the game plan after watching Alcorn play Dillard the other night. Then they went out and carried out the game plan. Our hitters stepped up, our defense was solid, and Alex (Alexandra Rencher) was much more comfortable as our setter than she was the last two matches.
"All around we played well. We never faced any serious deficits. We were in front most of the match. It was good to get a win on the road."
The Gold Nuggets (3-2) will play Mississippi Valley at 3 p.m. Saturday at The Barn. It will be Xavier's fourth match in five days.
Alcorn State, an NCAA Division I member, is 1-7 and winless in two home matches. The Lady Braves are 5-155 since the start of the 2005 season.
Xavier, an NAIA member, has 11 victories in four seasons against NCAA Division I. The Nuggets have won four straight against Alcorn dating to 2004.

DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough has tried to play down the magnitude of today's 4 p.m. matchup with Bethune-Cookman.

"I think we've got to look at it as a regular-season conference game and let things play out as they will," Pough said of the teams' Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener at Municipal Stadium. "There are good enough teams in the conference that probably neither one of us will get through unscathed."
But B-CU coach Brian Jenkins describes the contest as a heavyweight fight, "like Ali-Frazier."
Neither coach's comments should be taken at face value, however. To Jenkins, all the games are heavyweight fights. "Every game is a big game," he said. "Our first game (a 63-14 rout of Prairie View A&M on Sunday) was a big game. To us, all our opponents are the same. We prepare for them the same."
That may not be true of S.C. State, however ...

Stillman travels to Samford
TUSCALOOSA, AL - Teddy Keaton, Stillman’s first-year head coach, didn’t invoke the “24-hour rule” after the Tigers opened the season last week with a 16-13 win over nationally-ranked Shaw University. Keaton didn’t want his players to forget about it. He wanted them to enjoy the victory and remember how it was earned.
“Of course, you want to enjoy the victory, but we’ve still got work to do,” Keaton said. “We’re trying to get our kids to understand winning is a habit. We want our kids to expect big plays, expect to catch the ball, expect to do things the right way." “Yes, in a way they’re riding the momentum, but we’ve tried to calm them down as much as we can. We’ve got a bigger challenge this week against a (Football Championship Subdivision) team.”
Samford, coached by former Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan, opened its season last week with a 31-17 loss to Georgia Southern.
Kickoff tonight is at 6 p.m.

WSSU Maynor wants fewer mistakes
Richmond, VA - To make a solid run at the CIAA title, Winston-Salem State will have to get more disciplined. That much was evident last week in the season opener, a sloppy 22-17 victory over Elizabeth City State. The Rams had 11 penalties and several mental errors and looked out of sorts for most of the game.
Coach Connell Maynor of WSSU said he hopes today's 7 p.m. game at Virginia Union (2-0) will be different.
"It's a little disappointing," said Maynor, referring to his team's 399 yards of offense and only three touchdowns last week. "We had a lot of penalties that killed our drives. I always tell the guys other teams can't stop us, but we can only stop ourselves, and it was a classic case of that."
