Nuggets, Tougaloo postponed again; makeup date Nov. 1

Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyballNEW ORLEANS — For the second time this season, Xavier University of Louisiana's home volleyball match against Tougaloo has been postponed.

Transportation issues Monday afternoon prevented Tougaloo from traveling to XULA. The match has been rescheduled for 3:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Convocation Center, and it will become a lead-in to the XULA men's basketball home opener against Carver at 7 that evening. Admission will be free to the volleyball makeup.

\Tougaloo was first scheduled to visit XULA Sept. 4, but the match was scrapped due to the approach of Tropial Storm Gordon in the Gulf of Mexico. XULA and Tougaloo have yet to play each other this season; the teams are tied for first place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with 8-0 records.

XULA's final two regular-season matches will be against Tougaloo. The Gold Nuggets will visit Tougaloo at 1 p.m. Nov. 4.

The postponement is XULA's third this season. An Oct. 6 GCAC match at SUNO was scrubbed — SUNO didn't have enough healthy players — but was played four days later.

Next match for the Gold Nuggets (18-6) will start at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Convocation Center against GCAC member Rust. It will be XULA's first home match since Sept. 17.

Coleman Breaks Program Record, Propels Coppin State Eagles To 3-1 Victory

Miajavon Coleman HS 2018
MIAJAVOCOLEMAN

BALTIMORE, Maryland   Coppin State was aided by an Asia Stennis double-double and a record-breaking (four set matches) 25 Miajavon Coleman kills to fight off the pesky Delaware State Hornets 3-1. The Lady Eagles fell behind after the first set but persevered to rattle off three consecutive wins to earn the match.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Coppin State 3, Delaware State 1
  • Records: Coppin State 7-17 (2-3 MEAC), Delaware State 2-20 (0-5 MEAC)
  • Location: Baltimore, MD – Physical Education Complex Arena
  • Series History: Delaware State Leads 45-20
Box Score

How It Happened

First Set

  • Ties were the name of the game in the first set as the two squads failed to earn significant separation.
  • The largest lead came for Delaware State at the 23-19 mark, but CSU would make the Hornets sweat, rattling off four unanswered points before      DSU shut the door at 25-23.
  • The Lady Hornets might have won the set, but Eagles attackers Stennis and Coleman kept Coppin within striking distance, knocking down 12 kills between the two.
  • To go along with her seven kills, Stennis was stellar in her attempts, hitting .667 on nine attacks.
  • Both squads made the other earn its points, as each team only committed five errors apiece for the set.
  • Delaware State's set victory was its first in its last five matches along with the first set won in MEAC play for the Hornets.
Second Set
  • Coppin State responded with authority, sailing to a 13-7 advantage via four separate kill contributors.
  • DSU would claw back within three and make a game of it, however a 7-1 final surge knotted the match at one.
  • Coleman contributed six more kills, with her right-hand woman being Lauryn Harrell with four of her own.
Third Set
  • The Lady Hornets and Lady Eagles went back to the stalemate format of the first set, as five ties in the first 20 points suggested another tightly contested outing.
  • A Coppin 5-1 run broke the set open just enough for the Eagles to hold the Hornets at bay, as the four-point spread was the final margin in a 25-21 third set decision.
  • Coleman continued her torrid pace, smashing another 7 kills to lead the Eagles attack once again.
Fourth Set
  • Delaware State was a feisty foe for Coppin State as the Hornets led as late as 21-19.
  • Coppin turned up the heat from there, taking off on a 4-0 burst to put DSU on the brink of elimination.
  • Delaware State fought back to get it tied again at 23 before kills by Christa Johnson and Coleman put the final nail in the coffin, 25-23.
Inside the Numbers
  • Coleman rewrote the record books for the second time, clubbing the most kills in program history for a four-set match. The previous record also came against the Hornets, when Stacy Celestin accomplished the feat 15 years ago.
  • CSU had a top-heavy barrage on the statsheet, as 49 of the team's 56 kills were courtesy of Lauryn Harrell (12), Asia Stennis (12), and Miajavon Coleman (25).
  • Stennis recorded her second double-double in as many matches and fourth of 2018.
  • Harrell went over the 10-kill mark for the first time in her young career.
  • Brianna Lang put together her second highest assist total so far, racking up 50 assists and a 12.5 average on the day.
  • Asia Stennis and Chelsie Kolibar both hit double-digit digs to lead the Eagles, as Kolibar hit 13 to go with 11 for Stennis.
Who's Next?
  • CSU's volleyball program welcomes the preseason conference favorites, Bethune-Cookman, to the Physical Education Complex on Friday at 5 p.m.

North Carolina A&T State Aggies Lose Battle For First Place (Video)

EAST GREENSBORO, North Carolina (October 13, 2018) – It happened again and this time it counted toward North Carolina A&T’s opportunity to return to Atlanta in December. For the second time this season, the Aggies lost a football game on a last-second field goal at home.

When Morgan State kicked a 36-yarder three weeks ago to beat N.C. A&T it was a non-conference game. When Florida A&M kicked a 26-yarder Saturday with four seconds remaining it not only gave the Rattlers a 22-21 win at BB&T Stadium. It also kept the Rattlers (5-2, 4-0 MEAC) in first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. In addition, it put the Aggies (5-2, 2-1 MEAC) in a position where they are going to need help if they plan to return to their third Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl in four years.

What has become so customary in AggieLand over the past eight seasons is the ability to hold halftime leads. N.C. A&T came into the game with a streak of winning 51 straight games when leading at halftime. The last time the Aggies lost a halftime lead was Oct. 29, 2011 at Norfolk State. The Aggies held a 21-6 lead over the Rattlers at halftime. But the Rattlers compiled 231 yards in offense, registered 20 first downs and were 8-for-11 on third downs in the second half.

“It was the tale of two halves,” said N.C. A&T coach Sam Washington. “In the first half, we played well on both offense and defense. I thought we left at least 14 to 21 points on the field, and I told the guys at halftime you cannot do that against good teams. You have to score on every opportunity that’s presented to you, and we failed to do that in the first half.”

Mixed into the issues of missing out on opportunities for Washington are the penalties the Aggies amassed on Saturday. The Aggies had six in the first half and totaled 13 for 131 yards for the game. Conversely, the Rattlers only had four penalties for 26 yards.

“You cannot have 13 penalties for 131 yards and a win a ballgame of this magnitude against a worthy opponent,” said Washington. “They only had four penalties for 26 yards, so that is a very significant difference. But that didn’t determine our fate. We had opportunities up until the last drive. The game could have been out of reach in the first half.”

N.C. A&T did move the ball down the field in the first half, primarily through the air. Fifth-year quarterback Lamar Raynard, who broke the school record for career touchdown passes on Saturday with a 38-yard TD pass to sophomore Zachary Leslie in the first quarter, was 13-for-19 for 195 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Leslie benefited the most catching six passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns in the first 30 minutes. Leslie had a career game with eight receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns. The Aggies also got a 100-yard kickoff return from fifth-year returner Malik Wilson to open the game.

In fact, Raynard’s record-breaking connection to Leslie not only gave Raynard his 60th career touchdown pass to surpass Alan Hooker’s old mark (59), it also gave the Aggies a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Raynard and Leslie connected again in the first half on a 6-yard TD toss set up by a blocked punt by junior Jalon Bethea to give the Aggies first-and-goal from the Rattlers 6-yard line. N.C. A&T also missed a field goal in the first half and had two turnovers inside FAMU territory. The second turnover cost the Aggies six points as FAMU’s Herman Jackson ripped the ball away from junior running back Marquell Cartwright and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. It was a big boost for the Rattlers because the takeaway occurred mere minutes after they failed to execute on a fake field goal.

Despite those miscues, N.C. A&T’s offense showed no signs of stalling. But it did in the second half mainly because FAMU was good at playing keep away. FAMU’s first drive of the second half went 14 plays, 82 yards and lasted six minutes, five seconds. It ended when Azende Rey ran in from five yards out to cut the Aggies lead to 21-13.

FAMU’s second drive of the half took five minutes, 11 seconds before Yahia Aly missed a 44-yard field goal. Drive No. 3 was a 13-play, 56-yard drive that devoured 6:13 off the clock before a Ryan Stanley to Chad Hunter touchdown pass cut the Aggies lead to two, 21-19 with 5:09 remaining in the game. The two-point conversion failed to give N.C. A&T an opportunity to tick away some seconds themselves.

But the Aggies had to give the Rattlers the ball back with 2:01 remaining in the game with the Rattlers still possessing two timeouts. FAMU converted three first downs, a fourth down and got a key pass interference call during their march. Those happenings set up Aly’s game-winning 26-yarder.

BOX SCORE

“The second half was all about possessions,” said Washington. “FAMU kept the ball away from our offense. When we did get the ball, we didn’t have success very much. Now, we just have to go and find out what’s missing and get it corrected.”

Not all hope is gone from the Aggies 2018 season. Wins over nationally-ranked Division I-FCS program Jacksonville State and Division I-FBS East Carolina are still on the Aggies résumé for a bid to the NCAA FCS playoffs. N.C. A&T will need help from others if they wish to return to Atlanta, however.

The Aggies will try to regroup next week and avoid last-second field goals as they travel to Bethune-Cookman to face the Wildcats in Daytona Beach, Fla., 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20.

BOX SCORE

Morgan State, which wrapped up the first half of the MEAC slate today, will now direct its attention to American University, as the Lady Bears welcome the Eagles to Hill Field House on Wednesday, Oct. 17 for its final non-conference match of the season at 7 p.m.

Williams' Career Day Leads ASU Past Morehouse 41-19

ATLANTA, Georgia -- Kelias Williams posted a career best 254 yards on 16-18 passing and three touchdowns as Albany State University defeated Morehouse College 41-19 Sunday afternoon at B.T. Harvey Stadium.

Williams also carried the ball 10 times for 49 yards (32 net) and 20-yard rushing score, the Rams' first touchdown of the game.

With the win, the Golden Rams notch their fourth straight victory and hands Morehouse their first loss of 2018 (6-1, SIAC 2-1).

The Golden Rams rolled up 472 yards of total offense on 61 plays while limiting the Tigers to just 218 overall yards. Morehouse's 34 rushing yards represents the lowest output allowed by the ASU defense this season. Sunday's game also marked the third time this season an opponent of the Golden Rams was held without a rushing touchdown.

BOX SCORE

Leading by ten at halftime, the Golden Rams blew the game open with a 21-point third quarter to go up 38-13. At the 12:25 mark, Williams connected with Chris Hunt on a 29-yard touchdown pass, capping a 5-play, 75-yard drive for a 24-7 advantage. A three and out and subsequent short punt gave the Rams the ball back on the Tigers' 22-yard line. Three snaps later, McKinley Habersham carried ASU to a 31-7 lead on an 11-yard rushing score.

Habersham would finish the day as the game's leading rusher with 65 yards on 11 carries. He also accounted for ASU's final score of the third after he hauled in an 8-yard pass from Williams with 10 seconds left in the quarter. Habersham's two scores bookended an 11-yard touchdown strike (PAT failed) from the Tigers' Michael Sims to Amyr Smith.

Sims finished the afternoon with 184 yards through the air on 16 of 33 attempts.

The Rams' defense set the tone early, halting the game's opening drive with a Coemba Jones interception. On the fourth play from scrimmage, Jones picked off Sims' pass and returned it to the ASU 41-yard line.

The Golden Rams were flagged for an illegal block on the return and forced to set up shop at their own 22.

On Morehouse's ensuing possession, the ASU defense held the Tigers to a three and out that totaled -1 total yards. The Rams' next drive yielded the first score of the day when Gabriel Ballinas hit a field goal from 47 yards out for a 3-0 ASU lead. Ballias was also responsible for Albany's final score of the day after connecting on a 43-yard field goal with 7:44 left in the game.

Albany State (4-3, SIAC 3-0) will return to action on Saturday, October 20thagainst Clark-Atlanta University.

GSU uses strong third quarter to defeat TSU

HOUSTON, Texas | Geremy Hickbottom threw for over 300 yards and tossed three touchdowns as the Grambling State University football team used a strong third quarter to get past Texas Southern, 34-21, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Stadium.

"Texas Southern is a tremendous football team and is very-well coached," Grambling State head coach Broderick Fobbs said. "We made some key mistakes in the first half as we turned the ball over. We played well on both sides of the football and our kids continued to battle. We will take a look at the film and makes those adjustments as we prepare for next week against Alcorn State."

Samon scoreNeither team could get much going offensively in the opening quarter. Both teams were able to move the football into the red zone and turned the ball over on fumbles.

After a scoreless first quarter, Grambling State (3-3 overall, 2-1 SWAC) had a chance to put points on the board when Marc Orozco's 32-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Jarryl Taylor to keep the game scoreless.

Texas Southern (1-5, 0-2) picked up a first down on its next offensive possession, but a key sack by Jeremy Carter and a pass breakup by Chris Grant forced another TSU punt. However, Joseph McWilliams came in off the left side and blocked the Aaron Cuevas punt as Devante Davis scooped up the loose ball and ran six yards into the endzone to give Grambling State a 7-0 lead with 12:55 remaining in the first half.

Just two plays after the turnover, Hickbottom connected with Kobe' Ross for a 28-yard touchdown to give GSU a 14-7 lead with 2:33 left in the second.

Texas Southern looked to answer after the turnover, but Anfernee Mullins sacked Cuiellette as Grambling State took a 14-7 advantage into the break.

Grambling State took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 64 yards in 10 plays as GSU settled for an Orozco 34-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-7 with 10:49 remaining in the third quarter.

Grambling State answered the scoring drive as GSU put together a seven play, 75-yard drive, capped when Hickbottom completed two passes to Devante Davis. His first pass covered 17 yards and the last was a 24-yard strike to push the margin to 24-14 with 7:32 remaining in the third.

Late Defensive Stand Helps EWC To Division Win Over Faulkner

JACKSONVILLE, Florida -- With the visiting Faulkner Eagles (3-4, 0-3 MSC Sun) faced with a 4th & 1 at the EWC 25 yard line with just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, Edward Waters (4-3, 2-1 MSC Sun) was able to rise to the challenge and make the game-sealing stop to pick up an emotional 15-13 Mid-South Conference Sun Division home win on Saturday afternoon at the University Christian Football Complex.

The Tigers were the aggressors early in the contest after an interception from DB Darrian Hall on Faulkner's second possession placed the ball at the 35. Four plays later, QB Derrick Jones found WR David Beeks on a crossing pattern for a 14-yard touchdown to crack open the scoring at 7-0.

News PhotoAfter a three & out from the Eagles on their next drive, Edward Waters added to their lead with 5:02 left in the first quarter. The Tigers capped a seven-play, 74 yard drive as RB Richard Montgomery found the promised land on a 23-yard screen pass. Edward Waters used the "swinging gate" on their PAT attempt as DB Christian Hayes darted into the endzone for two-point conversion, extending the lead to 15-0.

The visitors eventually got on the scoreboard to start the second quarter on a one-yard rushing TD from Josh Gaines to bring Faulkner to within eight points of the lead at 15-7 and that is where the score remained going into halftime.

Neither team was able to put points on the scoreboard until 11:45 mark of the fourth quarter as Faulkner scored on a penalty aided drive. Josh Gaines scored his second touchdown of the night to bring the Eagles to within two. The Eagles' two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful keeping the Tigers with a two point advantage.

BOX SCORE

The teams exchanged three & outs on the next three drives, setting up the penultimate moment of the game with Faulkner driving from the EWC 34-yard line. Faulkner advanced the ball to the EWC 25-yard line and elected to go for it on 4th & 1. Josh Gaines took the hand-off around left end and the Tigers defense was able to quickly close the door to hold him to a minimal gain. The officials brought the chains and detemined that Gaines was a half yard short of the first down, giving the Tigers the ball on downs.

Two Derrick Jones kneel downs later, and Edward Waters was able to seal the deal on a 15-13 home victory.

With the win, EWC snapped a five-game home losing streak and goes above .500 in a season for the first time since 2012 when the Tigers opened the season with a 66-34 win over Point.

Edward Waters was able to come up with two takaways in the game, hold the Eagles to a season low 13 points, 108 yards rushing, and hold them to 4-of-17 on third down.

EWC is now 4-1 in their last five games and keeps pace in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division standings being tied for 2nd place with Southeastern.

Derrick Jones finished 12-20 passing for 119 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 13 carries for 37 yards. Richard Montgomery had eight carries for 38 yards and two catches for 24 yards and a touchdown. David Beeks led the Tigers in receiving with seven catches, a season-high 85 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, EWC was led by LB Cedric Lewis with a career-high 10 tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss, and a half sack. DB Kennard Mahone had eight tackles, 1.0 tackles for loss, and an interception, LB Elijah Spivey also had eight tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, and a half sack.

Edward Waters will celebrate Homecoming next Saturday at 3:00pm as they welcome MSC Sun Division Co-Leaders, Ave Maria into the University Christian Football Complex.

QUOTES FROM SATURDAY'S GAME

"It was an outstanding performance by our offense today. The defense has been playing well all season and stepped up in some critical moments as the game unfolded. We are really proud that we could deliver a win on homecoming in front of a great crowd today."
-Head Coach Cedric Pearl

"We look forward to our homecoming game every year and it means a lot to be able to win as a senior. Coach Pearl put together an excellent game plan and it worked. My goal was to take advantage of the coverages that they were giving us. We will celebrate the win tonight but our attention will immediately turn to a good opponent next week in Robert Morris University."
-Quarterback Trent Mays

"We really needed a win today to help spark us going forward. I thought our offensive line played great. My goal was to give my maximum effort and do everything the coaches tell us to do. We did that today and came out on top."
-Running Back Terraris Saffold

"A win like this really means everything. We feel like we are starting to come together on both sides of the ball. Coach did a great job of calling a play that caught the other team by surprise and I was able to execute on the fake punt. I really should have scored but I am thankful that it led to a touchdown. We all need to keep doing whatever it takes to win."

Benedict Tigers Block Clark Atlanta For 27-24 Victory

Benedict College TigersATLANTA, Georgia – The Benedict College Tigers blocked two field goals in the last 4:34 of the game, including the second one with just 45 seconds left, to hold on to a 27-24 victory over the Clark Atlanta Panthers on Saturday and spoil the Panthers' Homecoming at Panther Field.

Benedict improves to 5-1 overall with its fifth straight win, and 3-0 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta falls to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the SIAC.

Clark Atlanta had a 21-20 lead at the half, but the Tigers were able to hold the Panthers to just a field goal in the second half. And then it came down to making a pair of big stops at the end.

"I thought it was a hard-fought game," Benedict head coach Mike White said. "It was a typical SIAC battle. Clark played a great game. Just some big plays at the end allowed us to come out on top. It was a hard-fought game and I'm just glad we had one more point than they did."

Clark Atlanta got a 31-yard field goal from Carlos Saldana with 10:14 left in the game to cut the lead to 27-24. The Tigers punted the ball back to the Panthers on their next series, and Clark Atlanta drove to the Benedict 3-yard line, where Saldana's 20-yard field goal attempt was blocked. Benedict's 6-foot-5 offensive lineman Christian Taylor deflected the ball. The Tigers recovered the ball at the 1-yard line and were only able to pick up a few yards before having to punt the ball again. Clark Atlanta took over at the Benedict 22-yard line after a short punt and a holding penalty against the Tigers.

BOX SCORE

The Panthers moved the ball down to the Benedict 4-yard line, with Rashaad Miller and Joshua Siaosi stuffing the Panthers on an important third-and-two. Saldana came in with 45 seconds left to try and tie the game, but Taylor was able to push through again and block the kick.

"We've got some pretty tall guys inside and we put that in a few weeks ago. We use it from time to time. I kind of wish we could have turned them into some points, but those were just big plays by our block team. It was the difference in the game."

Benedict needed the big special teams stops after the Panthers threw for 412 yards against the Tigers and outgained Benedict 482-269 in total offense. Charles Stafford, who came into the game in the first quarter when starting CAU quarterback Elijah Odom was injured, completed 21-of-36 passes for 397 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

"We had a few blown coverages," White said. "We didn't have the pass rush all day that I thought we would have. Hats off to their staff, but I thought we could play a little better pass defense than that. That was the most disappointing part, that they had so many receivers who were wide open."

Dominique Harris completed 10-of-21 passes for 188 yards with two touchdowns for the Tigers. Harris also led the Tigers with 37 yards on the ground with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Drelon Freeman was the top receiving target with four receptions for 92 yards. Danye Washington and Keivonte Gallmon each caught a touchdown pass.

The Panthers opened the game with a touchdown on their opening drive, as Odom rushed 48 yards on the first play of the game and later threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Johnathan Sanders.

The Tigers answered by marching down the field, going 76 yards over 12 plays before Harris connected with Gallmon for a 6-yard scoring pass. Rigoberto Tinoco missed the extra point and Benedict trailed 7-6 with 7:15 on the clock.

Clark Atlanta's Saldana missed a 51-yard field goal attempt on the next possession, his first of three straight misses (from 51, 46 and 35 yards).

A 53-yard pass from Harris to Washington in the second quarter put the Tigers ahead 13-7 with 10:46 left in the first half. The Panthers quickly answered with Stafford throwing a 22-yard touchdown pass to Caleeb Roberson with 8:23 left and CAU regained the lead, 14-13.

After Benedict's Traviontae Brown recovered a CAU fumble, the Tigers drove 40 yards, with Harris picking up the final 20 on a rollout to give BC a 20-14 lead with 3:15 left in the first half.

Stafford and the Panthers needed just six plays to travel 75 yards in just a little over two minutes to retake the lead. Stafford's 11-yard pass to Corey King Jr. gave the Panthers a 21-20 halftime lead.

After Saldana missed a 46-yard field goal in the third quarter, Harris completed a deep pass to Freeman for a 64-yard pickup. Three plays later, Harris scrambled in from two yards out to give the Tigers a 27-21 lead.

Benedict returns home to take on the Morehouse Maroon Tigers in a key 2 p.m. conference showdown next Saturday. Morehouse was scheduled to take on Albany State at home on Saturday, but that game was moved to Sunday due to campus damage from Hurricane Michael and other issues in Albany, Ga., which prevented the team from fully preparing for the game. If Morehouse wins that game, the Tigers and Maroon Tigers will be fighting for first place in the SIAC East Division next week in front of a large Homecoming crowd.

"We're going to have to play a lot better," White said. "We're going to have to get ready for another tough game. There's going to be so many logs you can throw on this fire, from a conference game to those guys being undefeated coming in and being on fire the way they're playing. We've got to play better and put on a good show in front of our Homecoming crowd."
