FAMU's outside chances rest on Alabama's perimeter

TUSCALOOSA -- If Florida A&M is to have an outside shot to upset Alabama in the season opener at Coleman Coliseum tonight at 7:30, the Rattlers probably need to make some outside shots. Crimson Tide coach Anthony Grant wasn't happy with his team's perimeter defense or offense in two exhibition victories.

College and Alabama-Huntsville. That should improve when sharp-shooting senior guard Charvez Davis returns soon from hernia surgery. The Crimson Tide's two opponents combined to sink 13 of 55 shots (.236) from 3-point range. "We got exposed in some areas," Grant said after the double-overtime victory over UAH.

Tide ready for change in fortunes

TUSCALOOSA It is officially the start of a new men’s basketball season for the University of Alabama, and its star player, forward JaMychal Green, says he wants this year to be different. “I want a change,” Green said after Monday night’s exhibition win over UAH. “I want us to win more and go to the NCAA Tournament.

“I think we were very close last year,” Green said. “It came down to us not getting key stops, or making a turnover, or not making a big shot.” Starting with tonight’s game against Florida A&M, the Crimson Tide can begin making that change happen.

Lady Rattlers - Razorbacks open season Today

FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas women's basketball team opens the 2010-11 season Friday hosting Florida A&M in an 11:30 a.m. contest in Bud Walton Arena. The opener is the first of five consecutive home games for head coach Tom Collen and the Razorbacks.

"Well, we're excited to play," Collen said. "We had an exhibition game last week and saw some things we wanted to work on in practice. We've done that and now it's time to test that and see how far we've come. We are anticipating a great crowd and they are going to see a team that is really hungry and just wants to play."

The unusual start time of 11:30 a.m. accommodates a promotional event in which area elementary students have been invited to the game as a field trip. The event is paired with educational activities relating to health, nutrition and physical fitness.

"This is a really great event," Collen said. "I'm excited to have more than 2,500 screaming fans in the building, many of whom have not seen a basketball game on this level before."

Grambling blows big lead, falls to Texas Southern

HOUSTON, TX — The Grambling Tigers lost a 17-point fourth-quarter lead and their eight-game win streak deep in the heart of Texas on Thursday night. Texas Southern staged a furious fourth-quarter rally and defeated Grambling 41-34 in overtime to grab a stranglehold in the SWAC West Division.

Grambling (8-2, 7-1 SWAC) dropped its first conference game while Texas Southern improved to 7-3 (7-1). The Tigers can still claim the division title if they defeat Southern University in their regular-season finale and Texas Southern loses to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Thursday, Texas Southern outgained Grambling 542-219. The Tigers were aided by a 95-yard kickoff return from Edward Patterson and a 39-yard interception return from Derrick Wilhite in the first half.

Texas Southern is the new frontrunner in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division.
TSU rallied from a 17-point, fourth-quarter deficit with 24 unanswered points, including the tie-breaking touchdown in overtime, en route to snagging a thrilling 41-34 victory before a crowd of 10,023 Thursday night at Delmar Stadium.

TSU (7-3, 7-1 SWAC) won its sixth consecutive game to knock Grambling (8-2, 7-1) off its perch and can win its first Western Division title and a berth in the Dec. 11 SWAC championship game with a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their Nov. 20 regular-season finale. Another win would push TSU one step closer to competing for its first SWAC title since 1968.

TSU Defeats Grambling State 41-34 (OT)

HOUSTON, TX - Texas Southern University defeated Grambling State University 41-34 (OT) at Delmar Stadium in northwest Houston. With this latest victory, TSU is now two wins away from their first outright SWAC Chamionship in the 54-year history of the football program.

The TSU Tigers were coming from 17 down in the fourth quarter to beat Grambling 41-34 in overtime. With seven minutes left, Richard Samuel scored a 23-yard touchdown pass from Arvell Nelson to bring the point gap within three. Robert Hersch kicked a 20-yard field goal, tying the game with 15 seconds left on the clock.

TSU football's long climb nearing summit

Texas Southern football coach Johnnie Cole has the year 1968 stamped in his memory.

It's a reminder of the prize that has eluded his program for more than four decades. For Cole, it has been far too long since TSU won its last Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.

The 1968 Tigers, who split the title with Alcorn State and Grambling State, were of an era when TSU was a perennial contender in the SWAC. The accomplishments of those teams from 1950s and '60s have been overshadowed by the disparaging label placed on the program in recent years.

SC State rides big plays, defense to win over Morgan Bears

BALTIMORE, MD — South Carolina State's offense made the most of what little time they had on the field. FCS No. 15 South Carolina State had the ball for just under 24 minutes, but the Bulldogs used several big plays on both sides of the ball to hand Morgan State a 32-10 loss last night in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Hughes Stadium.

The Bulldogs showed why they are ranked second in total offense in the MEAC. South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1) piled up eight plays of over 20 yards, and the defense forced a fumble, an interception, a safety, and held the Bears offense to only 154 yards even though Morgan State ran 59 plays and had the ball for 36:47.

Donald Hill-Eley Coaches 100th Game For Morgan

The Ravens aren't the only Baltimore football team playing on national television Nov. 11 -- Morgan State will be on ESPNU when it hosts No. 15 South Carolina State. The Bears (4-5, 3-3 MEAC) are coming off a 37-25 loss Nov. 6 at Norfolk State while he Bulldogs (7-2, 5-1 MEAC) beat Howard, 54-14, in their Senior Day game.

South Carolina State leads the all-time series between the schools, 28-5-1. Morgan State's last victory during the series was a 23-12 upset in Orangeburg, S.C., in 2002, Donald Hill Eley's first year as head coach.

Nov. 11's game marks the 100th since Hill-Eley came to Morgan State. Now in his ninth year leading the program, Hill-Eley has a 46-53 record, which makes him the program's third-winningest coach behind Eddie P. Hurt and Earl C. Banks.

S.C. State takes down Morgan State, 32-10

BALTIMORE, MD - No. 14 South Carolina State came into Thursday night's game with Morgan State ranked second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in offense. The Bears got a good look at why the Bulldogs are so good. Morgan State couldn't stop a South Carolina State offense that made numerous big plays throughout the game at Hughes Stadium. The Bulldogs came up with a number of long gains that helped them to a 32-10 victory over the Bears.

The game was close early; the Bulldogs had a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter. But South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1) broke it open by scoring 22 of the final 25 points to take command and win its fourth straight game.

SSU MEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW

The Savannah State men's basketball program is looking ahead to the future, literally and figuratively.

The Tigers have only one player competing that isn't a sophomore or freshman. Two juniors, Rashad Hassan and Arnold Louis, who were among the team's top players a year ago, will red-shirt this season to save a year of eligibility when the school joins the Mid-eastern Athletic Conference next season.

"The operative word is transition, as an institution and a program we're trying to transition into the MEAC," said SSU sixth-year coach Horace Broadnax, whose squad opens the season Friday at home against Brewton Parker.

Lady Tigers Opens with Edward Waters

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Thirteen home games and a pair of four-game home-stands highlights the Savannah State women’s basketball slate for the 2010-11 season. Despite 13 home games, SSU will travel through 10 states this season (Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Virginia, Maryland, Indiana and New Jersey).

Cedric Baker, who is entering his 8th season as the Lady Tiger head coach, has SSU opening their 27-game schedule against NAIA opponent Edward Waters on November 12. After games at Florida A&M, South Carolina State and Charlotte, the Lady Tigers have home contests with North Florida (Nov. 27) and Central Florida (Nov. 30).

Shaw will count on its backcourt

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Shaw coach Cleo Hill Jr. evaluated the men's basketball team after last season and concluded the Bears needed to shoot better and have better athletes. When the third-year coach looks down his roster, he sees a guard-heavy rotation that specifically addresses his concerns.

The Bears host Mars Hill on Friday in their season-opener and will have their first chance to check for the speed, intellect and dynamism Hill felt they needed to succeed.

Senior guard Raheem Smith, the team's leading scorer last season at 14.6 points per game, will anchor the backcourt with newcomer Tony Smith, a 6-foot-5 transfer point guard from Seward (Mo.) Community College.

Albany State Rams still No. 1 in region poll, await playoff foe

The NCAA will announce the 24-team Division II playoff pairings on Sunday

ALBANY, GA — Guess who’s still on top of the latest Division II Super Regional football rankings? That would be none other than the Albany State Rams (10-0), who retain their No. 1 spot in the NCAA rankings released Wednesday after defeating Fort Valley State, 12-7, in the Fountain City Classic last Saturday.

ASU, which is set for its seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA playoffs, won the SIAC Championship by beating FVSU, and earned a bye for the first week of the playoffs, which open Nov. 20. The Rams lead the pack of six teams in the rankings, the Top 6 of which earn a playoff spot.

UMES Hawks will try to break through

PRINCESS ANNE -- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team finished 8-8 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play last season, sporting its best record in close to a decade. While, in past campaigns, breaking even in the conference would be welcomed, UMES coach Frankie Allen is far from satisfied. Allen, in his third year at the helm, looks to continue with the progression of a program that has seen its go from 4-28 in 2007-08 to 7-23 in 2008-09 to 11-21 last season.

"This is an opportunity for us to have a breakthrough season," Allen said. "It was a down program when we got here, and it has made significant progress."

UMES Routs Wesley in Exhibition Win

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) and sophomore Chelsea
Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 15 points each, including nine apiece in the second half, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team rolled to an exhibition victory over Division III Wesley, 87-51, in front of 1,469 at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The pair were two of four players to score in double figures in the win. Juniors Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) and Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) also had 11 and 10, respectively, while the UMES defense forced 33 turnovers and grabbed 23 steals.

St. Aug's will have new coach, new look

RALEIGH -- St. Augustine's men's basketball team will look a little different this season.

"Way different," said senior Shaun Washum, who is one of seven returners from a squad that last season won its first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference tournament since 1997, setting a school record for wins.

A lot has happened since the Falcons reached the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time in 13 years and finished with a 27-5 record. After coach Lonnie Blow Jr. and his staff were praised by university president Dr. Dianne Boardley Suber for turning the program around with an emphasize on discipline and defense, Blow later resigned in July to accept an assistant coaching job at Old Dominion, a Division I program.

County recruits bolster VSU Trojans

First cousins are combining to put the “foot” in football at Virginia State University (VSU).

Justin Parker and Billy Rudd, the “kickin’ cousins,” give the Trojans a strong Chesterfield presence, along with dynamic defensive back Howard Spencer Jr. Coach Andrew Faison’s squad entered the final week of the season (at St. Paul’s) with the chance to win the CIAA North and advance to the Nov. 13 CIAA championship game in Durham.

The overall CIAA kingpin earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. A trip to the playoffs would be a first for VSU, but then again, it’s the first time first cousins have supplied all the kicking. Place-kicking Parker, a senior and Matoaca High graduate, has nailed all six field goals this season (long of 39) and is 28-for-30 in extra points.

Grambling State in showdown at Texas Southern

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - It may not be one of the neutral-site "classic" games that Southwestern Athletic Conference teams often play in, but Grambling State's visit to Texas Southern Thursday night is a classic matchup. The showdown, fittingly, will be broadcast on ESPN Classic. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

SWAC races going down to wire

This much we know for sure: When the Southwestern Athletic Conference holds its championship game Dec. 11 in Birmingham, Ala., the two contestants will need a city map and a decent restaurant guide. After all, they’ll be visiting Legion Field for the first time in at least two years.

Prairie View, the reigning SWAC champion, lost too many early conference games and is out of the running for the Western Division title. Alabama A&M, last year’s Eastern champion, has found itself in a major rebuilding year; the Bulldogs have lost five straight games since they defeated Southern on Sept. 25.

Birmingham, Ala. - Jackson State University head football coach Rick Comegy has been suspended for one game (Saturday, November 13 vs. The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and fined $1,000.00 for violating the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s sportsmanship policy following the Tigers’ game at Alabama State on Saturday, November 6th.

Coach Comegy’s comments and actions following the contest violated SWAC policy which prohibits coaches, student-athletes, and administrators from making “Inappropriate/derogatory comments to the media about officials, coaches, student-athletes and administrators (or designee)."

Our take on all of this...total overkill!  Coach Comegy is not the problem! The SWAC needs to adopt a policy for instant video replay in all league games and immediately procure the necessary equipment for next season.  Too bad coaches careers are being jeopardized by the lack of proficiency in the SWAC Zebras Corps.  Implementing an instant replay policy would resolve most of coaches and players concerns and provide the Zebras with a reliable tool to assist them in officiating the games.

First Murphy; Now Comegy; Who's Next?

Why does comedy shows on the HBCU campus during homecoming week always include comedians that have vocabularies that does not require a college education to understand? What are we really teaching the students/young adults if we put so-called professional comedians before them and pay them for dialogues laced with profanity?

I do recognize it really take skills to be funny, without the profanity and choice gutter adjectives.

Charlie Murphy's stand-up comedy performance at Grambling State on Wednesday evening clearly missed the mark as being first--funny, and second--entertaining. The dude maybe comedian Eddie Murphy's brother, but he is not funny nor does he present a positive image that I would want my children exposed to on any college campus.

What's more insulting is these types are commanding $22,000 or more in performance fees for their useless 1-2 hour presentations. Here is what appears to have happened based on the video clip posted on YouTube:

"After being booed by several students, Murphy, the brother of world-famous comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, shouted an expletive at the audience and dropped the $22,000 check given to him by the GSU Student Union Board for his performance and left the stage."

On last Saturday evening, Jackson State University football coach Rick Comegy dropped 4 "F" words in a rapid fire 14 seconds on a local news reporter from Channel 12 in Montgomery, Alabama after the Alabama State Hornets squeaked past the JSU Tigers 32-30. Coach Comegy, as you can see was very angry with the SWAC game officials and their impact on the game's outcome.

I can understand and accept Comegy's outburst -- as he was caught up in the passion of the game and competition for a SWAC Championship. What's Charlie Murphy's excuse? A $22,000 pay day and he couldn't take a little booing from a spattering of fans that thought his material was weak....

Now, just my opinion--Coach Comegy was funnier than Charlie Murphy by ten country miles and he didn't get paid anywhere near $22,000 for this game or for his 14 seconds of Internet fame. I still don't want my children exposed to either tirade, but stuff like this happens in real life.

Before anyone gets the wrong ideal, it has been reported by reliable sources that Coach Comegy has provided an apology to the radio and television stations, the FCC and anyone else that care to listen. I can accept his apology and move on because Coach Comegy is very passionate about his work and the well-fair of his student-athletes.

Plus his delivery and quote is a Sports Center highlight of the decade. Charlie Murphy is not funny, except for those eyes! Coach Comegy is funny and entertaining.

As the commercial says, "want to get away?"

HU Seeks Redemption at FAMU

It's do or die football time for FAMU football. If for no other reason, the Rattlers should put every ounce of energy into steamrolling the Pirates for the 0-25 butt kicking they received last season, that knocked them out of an FCS at-large playoff berth.

Hampton has shown they can play with the MEAC's best -- blowing a field goal in the last four minutes at South Carolina State that prevented an upset of the Bulldogs. The Pirates also stayed even with undefeated B-CU (9-0, 6-0 MEAC) for a half last Saturday, before turnovers derailed their attempt to knock the Wildcats from sole possession of first place in the conference race.

The Rattlers entire season is riding on this game and a win provides FAMU with the opportunity to battle B-CU in the Florida Classic (next week) for a share of the MEAC crown.

HU Seeks Redemption at FAMU

Head coach Donovan Rose has a smart kid.

In the aftermath of a heartbreaking 23-18 loss to Bethune-Cookman University last Saturday, Rose felt disappointed. He was upset. His team had dominated the game going into halftime, only to bear the brunt of five turnovers in the second half. After a five-game winning streak followed by three straight losses, Rose, not surprisingly, has a chip on his shoulder.

His 11-year old son, D.J., didn't give him a chance to lick his wounds.

'09 shutout loss motivates Rattlers

As each quarter expired without a score by Florida A&M, what was transpiring on the football field gradually became very surreal. Hampton University kept running and running until it racked up 341 yards rushing in a game that ended with the Rattlers' first shutout in a conference game in more than two decades.

Seniors set for last home game

This Saturday will be the last time the seniors on the Florida A&M football team take the field in Bragg Memorial Stadium as the Rattlers take on the Pirates of Hampton University. FAMU is in the hunt for a MEAC championship and post-season play, while the Pirates come to Tallahassee looking to play spoiler.

TSU 3 Wins Away from SWAC Championship

HOUSTON, TX - In a battle of football Tigers, Texas Southern University will face Grambling State University in one of the most important games in the history of the TSU football program.

TSU has never won an outright SWAC championship. The program has shared the title on three occasions, although the last time that took place was in 1968.



WBB: Tigers to tip off at 1 p.m. Saturday at OSU

Texas Southern University women's basketball will tip off at 1 p.m. Saturday when the Tigers meet Oklahoma State on the road to open the season. Saturday's tip times weren't disclosed until this week due to Oklahoma State's football game at Texas, which will be aired on ABC at 7 p.m. ABC did not set kickoff times for its regional football broadcasts until Sunday. This marks Texas Southern's fourth trip to Stillwater, Okla., since 2004-05.

TSU returns five players who all have starting experience from last year's team, which went 13-18 overall, 9-9 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Lewis Jackson says ASU men will play up-tempo, better

Alabama State's basketball team was a disappointment in 2009-10, at least by coach Lewis Jackson's standards. The Hornets played too much half-court offense, couldn't finish plays around the basket or at the free-throw line and didn't rebound to his satisfaction.

"When I took the job, I wanted to be a team that was going to get up and down the floor," said Jackson, who is beginning his sixth year at his alma mater. "But last year I kind of got caught with some guys we thought would be able to play and they were unable to do it at that time."

Washington, Johnson Lead ASU Past Georgia Southwestern

MONTGOMERY—Kenderek Washington scored 19 points and Ivan Johnson added 16 to lead Alabama State University to a 67-57 win over Georgia Southwestern State University in exhibition play to open the 2010-11 season.

ASU jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the first nine minutes of the game, but as the defensive intensity on both teams increased, the Hornets shooting fell off as they only scored six more points in the final 11 minutes of the first half.

HU fumbles away chances to win in 23-18 loss to Bethune-Cookman

HAMPTON — Going into halftime, Donovan Rose's Hampton University team had a seven-point lead on undefeated Bethune-Cookman, the No. 11 team in the country, a team that hadn't trailed all season and was putting up 44 points a game. "I felt great," Rose said.

Rose's happiness lasted 19 seconds into the second half, until the first of two turnovers-turned-touchdowns in a span of 3:04 swung the momentum and the outcome in the Pirates' 23-18 loss to the Wildcats on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium.

Hampton squanders chances as Bethune-Cookman escapes

HAMPTON — When they pen the epitaph of Hampton University's 2010 football season, it will read something like: Here lies a team whose offense was too often inoffensive and whose special teams were anything but. On a day when the Pirates' gallant defense again played well enough to win, the offense and special teams again cost them a chance at a signature victory and a share of first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Instead, the Pirates go back to the training room and the video room for a heaping helping of "What if …" after Saturday's 23-18 loss to league leader Bethune-Cookman.



HU notebook: Hurt Legree gets playing time after Bynes was injured

HAMPTON — David Legree dressed out for Saturday's homecoming game against Bethune-Cookman, but Hampton's starting junior quarterback in no way expected to play. In fact, with junior Herb Bynes leading the Pirates down the field early in the second quarter, Legree's thoughts strayed to the locker room.

"Herb was playing so good, I was two plays from going to take off my equipment," said Legree, who aggravated lingering right leg injuries last week.

HAMPTON, VA – Hampton University looked to do something it had not done since 2006: win its Homecoming game. Celebrating Senior Day in front of a crowd of over 12,000 fans, the Pirates fell short yet again against the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University on Saturday. The Wildcats used an explosive second half to come out on top 23-18 at Armstrong Stadium.

Florida A&M fined by MEAC for marching band's delay of game

Florida A&M University has been fined $5,000 by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for violation of conference rules regarding bands and spirit groups during football contests.

The violation occurred during the Rattlers homecoming football contest against Morgan State on Oct. 31. The Florida A&M band, famously named the Marching 100, exceeded permitted performance time during the halftime break, causing the host football team to be penalized 10 yards for delaying the start of the third quarter.

SCSU Bulldogs get Long on success

ORANGEBURG — Senior quarterback Malcolm Long threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns to become South Carolina State’s career passing leader (6,363 yards) as the Bulldogs cruised to a 54-14 victory against Howard on Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

The Bulldogs (7-2, 5-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic) jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter off a 40-yard inception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker Marshall McFadden. Senior running back Chris Merrill scored the first of two touchdowns with a 4-yard run and Long connected with Thomas Williams on a 31-yard touchdown pass to make the score 20-0 in the first quarter.

Howard Bison Drops Fourth-Straight, 54-14 to South Carolina State

The season is coming to a close but the losses continue to pile up for the Howard Bison, who suffered their fourth-straight defeat Nov. 6 in a 54-14 shellacking by the South Carolina State Bulldogs in Orangeburg, S.C.



S.C. quarterback Malcolm Long threw for 275 yards and two scores, powering S.C. State to a 37-7 halftime lead. When Long wasn’t torching Howard through the air, running back Chris Merrill was gashing them on the ground, accounting for three scores on just 42 yards rushing.

Ex-Lamar Star Leads SC State Past Howard

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Former WPDE All-Zoner Marshall McFadden, a product of Lamar, returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown to help South Carolina State to a 54-14 win over Howard on Saturday. QB Malcolm Long passed for 275 yards and two touchdowns. Long became the school's all-time leader in total yards with 6,363 eclipsing the old record held by Cleve McCoy.

JSU can't overcome slew of turnovers, penalties against ASU Hornets

MONTGOMERY — For so much of this season, Jackson State depended on its sure-armed quarterback. On Saturday night, the Tigers couldn't overcome his mistakes and a multitude of foolish penalties.

Passing into a swarming secondary, Casey Therriault tossed a season-high three interceptions, and Jackson State committed 17 penalties in a 32-30 loss at Alabama State, suffering a major setback in its quest to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division and sending its coach into a rage.

Tillman, Lee turn in breakout performances

MONTGOMERY — If there was a bright side to Jackson State's 32-30 loss to Alabama State on Saturday night, it was the emergence of two guys Tigers fans have been waiting to explode: receiver Keenan Tillman and running back B.J. Lee. Tillman, a junior who was second on the team in receiving yards last year, has been hampered by a hamstring injury for most of the season. It looks like he's all better now.

Bridge leads Alcorn State over Alabama A&M 41-24

NORMAL, Ala. -- Brandon Bridge passed for four touchdowns and ran for another as Alcorn State scored 28 first-half points and defeated Alabama A&M 42-24 on Saturday. Three of Bridge's touchdown passes came in the first half, when the Braves (5-4, 4-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) built a 28-10 lead. He also scored on a 15-yard run in the second quarter.

Alabama A&M defense struggles

HUNTSVILLE, Al. - Alabama A&M's defense, which has struggled over the last month or so, did so again Saturday against Alcorn State. The Braves, who entered the game averaging 30.5 points and almost 370 yards per game, scored on their first three possessions and four of their first five and compiled 302 yards in total offense in a 41-24 victory.

"We didn't execute on defense," defensive tackle Frank Kearse said. "We didn't come ready to play." Alcorn State quarterback Brandon Bridge, the leading candidate for Southwestern Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year honors, was 9-of-14 for 175 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries, including a 15-yard touchdown jaunt.

MORE MISERY

HUNTSVILLE, Al. - Alabama A&M, enduring its worst season in almost two decades, had seemingly come to life. The Bulldogs, who trailed Alcorn State by as many as 21 points at one time, had pulled to within 34-17 late in the third quarter and was driving toward yet another touchdown that could have made it a 10-point game. Unfortunately, like it has so many times this season, A&M self-destructed.

Grading the Bulldogs

OFFENSE: C: Alabama A&M running back Tony Green had a career-day with 156 yards and a couple of touchdowns, but the Bulldogs committed three turnovers, including two interceptions by quarterback Justin Jones, one of which was returned 65 yards for a touchdown that gave Alcorn State a commanding 41-17 lead late in the third quarter.

Lane Dragons end 2010 without a win

TUSKEGEE, Ala. — Lane failed to get first-year head coach Derrick Burroughs a win this season as the Dragons lost at Tuskegee 28-6 on Saturday in their final game of the year. The second quarter was the difference as Tuskegee scored three touchdowns in the period after entering the quarter up 7-0.

Joshua Harris threw to D'Mari Franklin for a 27-yard score to put Tuskegee up 7-0. Nykeem Barton followed with two rushing touchdowns from inside the red zone. Jeremy Williams then threw to Philand Browder for a 37-yard score for the four-touchdown lead.

Bowie grounds Chowan Hawks 59-19 to close out season

Budd and Johnson Set or Tie BSU Records

MURFREESBORO, N.C.- Bowie State rolled up a season-high 582 yards of total offense, crushing Chowan University 59-19. However, due to Virginia State's victory over Saint Paul's, Bowie State wraps up their season with a record of 6-4 overall and 6-1 in the CIAA. The 6-1 conference record is teams best since 1989.

Senior Rodney Webb capped-off a 7-play, 63 yard opening game drive with a 16-yard touchdown run. Junior Michael Gagne added the extra point for an early 7-0 lead. Chowan answered with a Ryan Simpson to Elliot Smalls� 17-yard pass and catch to pull within 7-6 at the 2:29 mark of the first quarter.

Gagne booted a 26-yard field with 10:52 remaining in the second quarter to give BSU Bulldogs a 10-6 advantage. Junior Clifton Budd connected on a 57-yard passing touchdown to senior Derrick McPhearson. Gagne's extra point extended the Bowie State lead to 17-6 with 55 seconds left in the first half.

Chowan's Smalls pounded in from one-yard out on the Hawks opening drive of the third quarter to cut the Bowie State lead to 17-12. Senior Gregory Jackson hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Budd, doubling up the Hawks by the score of 24-12.

Bowie State padded their lead at the 14:40 mark of the fourth quarter, after senior Troy Gibson rushed up the middle for a four yard score and a 31-12 cushion. Senior Anthony Green caught his first touchdown pass of the season, scoring from 31 yards out, increasing the Bulldogs lead to 38-12.

Senior strong safety Sterling Grant Jones was given the pigskin at the 7:52 mark of the final period, rushing for his first career touchdown from four yards out. Gagne extra point made the score 45-12 Bulldogs.

Sophomore Ramono Flowers recorded his third touchdown of the year, rumbling 24-yards for six more Bulldogs points. Freshman Gregory Koepping converted the extra point, giving Bowie State a 52-12 stronghold.

Chowan's Eddie Coard caught an eight yards pass from Simpson with 2:32 left in the season and Ryan Murphy added the extra point, but the deficit was too big at this point.

Budd flipped a 28 yard pass to junior Seth Minter with 38 seconds remaining in the contest and Gagne added the extra point to close out the game.

Budd completed 15-of-25 passes for 294 yards and four touchdowns. Budd's four passing touchdowns tied the season-record for the second time this season. Webb tied his season-high of 20 carries and rushed for a season-high 103 yards. Senior Derrick McPhearson wrapped up his brief Bulldogs career with a game-high 107 reception yards on five catches.

Budd set a new school record for passing yards in a season with 1,538. The old season mark of 1,462 was set by Jimmy Whitehead (1999).

Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by senior Terence Peete with a team-high eight tackles. Junior Delano Johnson along with seniors Gregory Jackson and Sterling Grant-Jones added six tackles each. Johnson also had two blocked kicks, giving him six for the season, tying a BSU record (Robert Zachery 1990).

Simpson led Chowan's offense with 240 passing yards, completing 22-of-38 passes and one touchdown, but was sacked five times and intercepted once.

Jason Ampy paced the Hawks defense with eight tackles and Gatlin Williams and Venel Hippolyte added a half dozen tackles apiece.

Chowan closes out the year with an overall record of 3-7 and 3-5 in the CIAA.

Texas Southern hands Southern worst loss since 1999

When Southern’s football team came out the locker room after halftime Saturday night at A.W. Mumford Stadium, the goal was to close a 13-point gap against a brutally physical Texas Southern football team. The Jaguars believed they could do it. They had faith.

“The coaches told us to keep fighting. We weren’t out of the ballgame,” safety Anthony Wells said. “They told us to keep mistakes to a minimum and play hard.”

Southern needed a spark, a turnover, a big special-teams play. Something. Anything. Nothing good happened. By the end of the third quarter of a thoroughly convincing 54-7 blowout, the pep in Jaguars’ step was long gone and so were most of the 8,329 fans who bothered to show up.

Jaguars offense stymied

Call it intuition, call it foreboding. Whatever it was, the smallest crowd of the season was on hand to watch the most lopsided home loss for Southern University in recent seasons, a 54-7 defeat at the hands of Texas Southern.

Texas Southern brought in the second-ranked defense in the Football Championship Subdivision, and the Tigers acquitted themselves nicely. Southern’s offensive statistics all came in below the meager averages already allowed by Texas Southern.

SOUTHERN NOTEBOOK: Lopsided loss makes history

This was not the way Southern intended to make history. In dominating the Jaguars 54-7 on Saturday night in A.W. Mumford Stadium, Texas Southern earned its most lopsided win in the history of the TSU-SU football series, which dates to 1946. Before Saturday, the Tigers’ largest margin of victory was 37 points, achieved in a 37-0 win in 1972.

Southern offense manages just 134 yards

Think Southern’s 54-7 loss to Texas Southern on Saturday night was bad? Linebacker Shomari Clemons said it should have been worse. “We could have held them to zero points, we could have held them to a goose egg,” said Clemons, the LSU transfer who scored the first of Texas Southern’s two defensive touchdowns — outscoring Southern’s offense. His defensive teammates agreed.

Exama leads GSU to 35-0 homecoming win

Saturday was homecoming for Grambling, but one of the happiest fans at Eddie Robinson Stadium might have been a visitor attending her first game of the season. The Concordia Hornets showed early they should not be taken as lightly as the 82-7 rout in the teams' previous meeting might indicate.

Concordia's offense drove the ball 51 yards on the game's opening drive and came to the line of scrimmage looking for more on second down from the 24, but Grambling linebacker Cliff Exama had other ideas. The junior intercepted Concordia quarterback Sherman Stephens...

Walker, Warren pace Grambling

GRAMBLING — Cornelius Walker and Frank Warren combined for 189 yards rushing and each scored a touchdown Saturday as Grambling State shut out Concordia College 35-0.

Warren ran for 92 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown, and Walker had 97 yards with a 4-yard scoring run for the Tigers (8-1), who have won eight games in a row. Grambling, a Division I Football Championship Subdivision school, outgained Concordia, an NCAA Division II school, 329-60 in total yardage.

SSU falls behind fast and furious in loss

NORFOLK, Va. - Savannah State's stumbling, bumbling, fumbling ways continued Saturday afternoon as the Tigers lost their 11th straight, falling 57-9, this time to Old Dominion on a crisp Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field.

Doom found the Tigers (0-9) immediately when the Monarchs converted a pooch kickoff recovery and were in the end zone four plays later. The afternoon just seemed to worsen as the sun went down.

ODU's just too much for Savannah State 57-9

NORFOLK, VA - It was a day of firsts for Old Dominion's football team. First kickoff returned for a touchdown. First interception returned for a touchdown. First ridiculous, one-sided blowout.

The Monarchs, in the last stages of prepping for entry into the Colonial Athletic Association, dismantled struggling Savannah State 57-9 on a brisk Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field. ODU's 57 points were the most scored by the Monarchs in a game, surpassing a 49-point output last season against Division II Virginia Union. The school record for points against a Division I program is 44, set earlier this year against Campbell.
