XU Salwan, Goreau selected GCAC Players of the Week
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Karan Salwan and Charlene Goreau, both first-team NAIA All-America a year ago, have opened the 2017 tennis season as Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Players of the Week for Jan. 23-29.
Salwan, a senior from New Delhi, India, and a graduate of Modern School, won all three of his doubles matches, including a pair of victories Saturday at NCAA Division I Louisiana-Lafayette. Salwan's doubles partner was Tushar Mandlekar. Neither of Salwan's singles matches against the Ragin' Cajuns was completed, but he earned a singles victory Sunday at home against city rival Loyola.
Goreau, a sophomore from Toulouse, France, and a graduate of Raymond Naves School, won in singles and doubles against Loyola in the Gold Nuggets' first dual match of the semester.
The GCAC awards are the fifth of Salwan's career and the fourth of Goreau's.
The Gold Nuggets, ranked 19th in tne NAIA, will travel to Mobile, Ala., to play NCAA Division I South Alabama at 11 a.m. Saturday. Next for the second-ranked Gold Rush will be a 2 p.m. home dual Feb. 14 against NCAA DI Nicholls State.
NOTES: XULA coach Alan Green said he has added a March 22 home men's dual at 1 p.m. against NCAA Division II Ouachita Baptist . . . XULA men's and women's duals at NCAA DI Florida Atlantic March 18 have been canceled.
