Div. II Henderson State routs UAPB Golden Lions, 34-0

Henderson State took on its second NCAA Division I (FCS) opponent in as many weeks, but this to time the Reddies were the dominate team as Henderson rolled to a 34-0 beating of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Saturday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium. The Reddies recorded only the second win over a Division I (FCS) opponent, with the first being a 41-35 win over Hal Mumme’s Southeastern Louisiana team in 2003.

The third largest crowd in Henderson State history of 9,537 witnessed Roch Charpentier complete 25 of 49 passes for 352 yards including touchdown tosses of 19 yards to Sean Stennis and 69 yards to Garett Canning. The Reddies struggled with the ground game totaling just 116 yards with Bernard Palmer carrying the ball 15 times for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

The Reddie defense had no mercy on UAPB quarterback Gvona Turner sacking the freshman nine times. Junior defensive end Colrett Boyd led the Reddie defense with three sacks while Demarcus Robinson totaled eight tackles. The Reddie defense limited the Lions to just 217 yards of total offense. Palmer capped the first scoring drive of the game with a 2-yard touchdown run with 9:54 remaining in the first quarter.

The five-play 26-yard scoring drive included a 17-yard pass from Charpentier to senior wideout Stennis. Stennis was on the receiving end of another pass from Charpentier at the beginning of the second period after Darnei Bates recovered a UAPB fumble. Henderson State took the lead into halftime, 14-0.

Henderson State took the opening kickoff of the third quarter looking to extend the lead. The Reddies drove the ball 55 yards in 10 plays before Palmer extended the lead to 20-0 after a three yard touchdown run. After another costly UAPB turnover, the Reddies capitalized with a five play scoring drive, capped by the 62 yard Charpentier to Manning touchdown reception.

As UAPB tried to battle back as the fourth quarter began, the Reddies’ Michael Buse blocked a punt and took the ball the remaining 10 yards into the end zone, capping the HSU victory, 34-0. Henderson State totaled 468 yards of total offense while the defense forced four lost UAPB fumbles.

The Reddies return to action Saturday in Flourence, Alabama against #3 North Alabama.

The road doesn't get easier for the 0-2 Golden Lions as they face Southland power Central Arkansas in Little Rock at 6 pm on Saturday. The UCA Bears (2-0) are currently ranked #22 in the latest Division I FCS Polls and defeated Henderson State 38-14 on Aug. 28. UAPB has lost to two Division II Gulf South Conference teams by the combine scores of 7-55.

Freshman QB Cobb accounts for 3 TDs

Kentucky didn't quite get its offense untracked as much as it would have liked against Norfolk State last night, but it might not matter that much if the defense continues to keep opposing teams out of the end zone. Thanks to a boost from freshman quarterback Randall Cobb, the offense showed some signs of life, but the biggest story of the 2008 UK season continues to be the defense. Steve Brown's unit held its opponent without a touchdown for the second straight week in a 38-3 home-opening win in front of 69,118 at Commonwealth Stadium.

It marks the first time since 1993 that the Cats held a team without an offensive touchdown in back-to-back games and the first time since 1978 that they kept two straight opponents out of the end zone entirely. The last time UK didn't surrender a touchdown for the first two games of a season was 1958.

TSU roars back in second half, wins Classic

It was a classic comeback. In the 10th annual John Merritt Classic, Tennessee State spotted Southern an 11-point lead before Antonio Heffner led the furious rally for the Tigers, who claimed a 34-32 win over Southern. An LP Field crowd of 28,830, the second-largest ever to attend the John Merritt Classic, saw TSU's offense keep the Tigers in the game long enough for the defense to finally stall the Jaguars.

After Southern took an 18-7 lead midway into the third quarter, Antonio Heffner led TSU's comeback by tossing three touchdowns in the quarters. Heffner then gave running back Javarris Williams the ball and Williams ran for two fourth-quarter scores to give the Tigers 34 points in the second half.

Tuskegee trounces Coach Billy Joe's Miles Bears

TUSKEGEE, AL -- Tuskegee quarterback Jacary Atkinson walked out of his team's locker room, sweat from a season-opening victory washed away with a postgame shower and a smile creeping across my face. "I had to take a little time to make myself look good," Atkinson said. Atkinson had already done that for the Golden Tigers in Saturday's 34-0 win over Miles at Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium.

The senior ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns, including a 14-yard score just before halftime that got Tuskegee rolling. He also passed for 258 yards and another score. "He's great," receiver Jason English said. "I'm glad I have another year with him." Atkinson and English hooked up for a 12-yard touchdown pass to end Tuskegee's first drive, but the Tigers had bountiful offensive mistakes until the final minute of the first half. "We played like we haven't played this year," Tuskegee coach Willie Slater said.

One week after Florida A&M beat the Hornets, Classic rival Bethune-Cookman did the same Saturday, riding a staunch defensive effort and opportunistic secondary to a 28-7 victory at Municipal Stadium. "That's Coach Wyatt football right there. That's Alvin Wyatt football. When we get together and we meet, the first thing we talk about is defense," said B-CU defensive coordinator Marc Lippens, who spoke for Wyatt because the head coach was being treated in the locker room after the game for cramps.

"The first kids that we look at on the recruiting trail are defensive kids. He wants our defense to dominate and let the offense do what they do on their own side." The offense did their part as well, racking up 370 yards behind quarterbacks McKinson Souverain and Matthew Johnson.

The switch-em-up rotating unit that is the Jackson State offensive line trotted out Saturday with yet another version — still looking for the perfect match. The first group looked lined up in the 17-7 win over Stillman with (from left tackle to right tackle) Mikael Harshaw, Michael Odister, William Davis, Terrael Williams and Talon Boudreaux. The results were better than the season opening loss, but still could still use some improvement.

“As a unit as a whole, we did all right,” Harshaw said. “Shuffling guys in and out, we still have to find our solid line to start with so we can roll with. “That’s what you have to do to find the best five.” The group opened gaping holes that allowed running back Bloi-Dei Dorzan to rush for 111 yards. And Stillman only accounted for one quarterback hurry and three sacks.

Schaefer sets record in Towson Tigers' win over MSU Bears

Towson quarterback becomes school's all-time passing yardage leader in 21-16 victory over Morgan State

Sean Schaefer threw three touchdowns and became Towson's all-time passing yardage leader, and the Tigers rallied to beat Morgan State 21-16 Saturday night. Schaefer, who passed for 243 yards, broke the record of 8,900 career passing yards set by Dan Crowley (1991-94) on a 40-yard screen pass to Hakeem Moore with 3:50 remaining in the game.

MSU Bears running back Devan James hits a career high 178 yards on 33 carries at Towson.

Schaefer connected with Steve Holmes for a 12-yard touchdown to pull Towson (1-1) within two points in the third quarter. The record-breaking quarterback threw a 4-yard passing score to Marcus Lee to put the Tigers ahead for good with 1:59 left in the quarter. Devan James totaled a career-best 178 yards on 33 carries for Morgan State (0-1). The Tigers improved to 16-5 all-time against Morgan. Towson took a 7-0 lead on the game's first drive when Schaefer threw 55-yard touchdown to Casey Cegles.

Arkansas State smashes Texas Southern, 83-10

JONESBORO, AR – Arkansas State scored early and often in its home debut Saturday night, pounding Texas Southern 83-10 in front of a crowd of 21,741 at ASU Stadium.

Freshman tailback Derek Lawson rushed for 209 yards and a touchdown in the game, the 8th most rushing yards in ASU history. Junior tailback Reggie Arnold added 123 yards and two touchdowns and junior quarterback Corey Leonard accounted for 229 yards of total offense and threw for four touchdowns as Arkansas State finished with 670 yards of total offense in the game, the second most in school history.

“I’m proud of a lot of individuals. They all played a great game,” said ASU Head Coach Steve Roberts. “All four of the running backs that carried the ball did a tremendous job. Reggie obviously got out of the game very early, and then Derek Lawson came in and rushed for more than 200 yards. You guys got to see a little bit of Derek Lawson that we get to see every day in scout team. I am also really proud of David Johnson. He had a big night, especially early in the game.”

“Defensively, we went out and did what we needed to do and shut them down,” added Roberts. “We gave up a couple of big plays, but overall did a good job. Our football team has got to get over this win in a hurry because we have a big game next week.”

ASU got on the board with less than two minutes gone in the game with a 53-yard pass from Leonard to Johnson. Two minutes later, Leonard connected with junior tight end Trevor Gillott from 39 yards out for the 14-0 ASU lead.

A 25-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown from sophomore linebacker Javon McKinnon, a 33-yard field goal from junior Josh Arauco, and a two-yard pass from Leonard to freshman fullback Jeff Blake wrapped up a 31-0 first quarter for ASU.

Leonard and Johnson hooked up for their second touchdown pass of the night just 29 seconds into the second quarter, and Arnold scored on touchdown runs of two yards and 56 yards before Texas Southern got on the board with a 34-yard field goal from Robert Hersh to make it 52-3 at the half.

A five-yard touchdown run from Lawson, a 30-yard field goal from Arauco and an eight-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Travis Hewitt made it 69-3 before the Tigers scored their only touchdown of the night on a 32-yard pass from quarterback Bobby Reid to wide receiver William Osbourne.

Blake added a 15-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, and freshman linebacker Demario Davis returned a fumble 53-yards for a touchdown to set the final at 83-10 after Arauco’s 11th extra point. Arauco was 11-for-11 on extra points to tie the ASU record, and 2-for-2 on field goal tries on the night.

The Red Wolves’ 83 points were the second most in school history and the most in the history of ASU Stadium. The 73-point margin of victory was the most under head coach Steve Roberts.

Arkansas State continues a three-game home stand next week when they host Southern Miss in a 6 p.m. game at ASU Stadium.

Texas Southern next game is Sept. 13 at the Capital City Classic (Sacramento, California) Hughes Stadium, against CIAA Division II foe, Shaw University (N.C.). Game time is at 2:05 pm PT. The Tigers are currently on a 15 game losing streak.

Webster defends non-FBS lineup

Coach James Webster takes offense to suggestions that Tennessee State is ducking Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) teams. TSU played at Vanderbilt in 2006. Before that, the Tigers hadn't played an FBS team since Louisville in 1983. But Webster insists TSU, which plays in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), is not trying to avoid the tough non-conference games. In fact, he says, it's quite the opposite.

"You have to understand who we play instead of playing Division I-A teams,'' Webster said. "We're playing three of the top four teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Our games against those teams are very emotional games." By contrast, the coach said, many mid-major teams enter non-conference matchups with the top tier teams knowing they have only a slim chance to win. TSU (1-0), plays a non-conference game tonight at 6 p.m. against rival Southern (0-1) in the 10th annual John Merritt Classic at LP Field.

JACKSONVILLE, AL - Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones learned two days before the Bulldogs' season opener against Tennessee State that his three Division I transfers - offensive tackle Michael Brown, inside linebacker Alfred Williams and defensive end Cornelius Robinson - wouldn't be able to play pending a ruling by the NCAA on their eligibility.

As a result, Jones had to resort to his backup plan, and it failed miserably as the Tigers claimed a 34-13 victory. Jones had hoped those players would be cleared in time for today's game at Jacksonville State. As of Friday, there had been no word. The Bulldogs and Gamecocks will battle at Paul Snow Stadium with both teams in search of their first victory of the season. Kickoff is 6 and the game can be heard on WJAB-FM 90.9.

The SIU football team heads into its first game under new head coach Dale Lennon with a slight disadvantage. It hasn't played a game yet.SIU opens its season against Hampton University (1-0) Saturday at 6 p.m. in McAndrew Stadium. And while the team remains confident in its abilities to execute a solid game plan, there are concerns that Hampton's one game experience could give them a slight edge.

"That they have had that first game under their belt is a concern for me," Lennon said. "Anytime they have that first game, they can identify those first game mistakes and it is just a luxury that we don't have." Typically, coaches agree that teams make the most improvements between week one and week two of a given season. Besides getting first game jitters out of the way, teams are also given a chance to identify strengths and weaknesses and improve upon them during the following week of practice.

Its core isn't quite that obtuse. "This is the beginning of a new day," fullback Eugene Parnell says, beginning another narration of The Creed. "God has given us this day to use as we will. We can either waste it or use it for good. What we do today is important, for we have exchanged a day of our lives for it. We want it to be for good, not bad; for gain, not loss; for success, not failure; in order that we never regret the price that we pay for it."

Grambling took its lumps last week in its season opener falling 49-13 to Nevada. The young Tigers gave up 426 rushing yards and scored one offensive touchdown. The Alcorn State game puts Grambling on a more level playing field. Alcorn State fell to Southeastern Louisiana last week, 36-28, and returns 12 starters from last year’s 2-8 campaign. Both teams will be looking for a 1-0 start in SWAC play.

KEYS TO VICTORY: Grambling had great trouble running the ball against Nevada, finishing the game with just five net rushing yards. The Grambling offensive line needs a much better performance against Alcorn State. Sophomore quarterback Greg Dillon is still learning the ropes, and if Grambling can’t run the ball it puts too much pressure on Dillon.

COLUMBIA, SC -- When it comes to Benedict College football, “Big Stan” can refer to two people. There’s Stan Conner, who’s entering his second season as Tigers’ head coach, and then there’s 6-3, 350-pound offensive guard Stanley Wright. The Holly Hill native has not only been a mainstay for Benedict, playing all three positions (center, tackle and guard) on the offensive line, but also a positive influence.

The Bulldogs played respectable football last week against FBC UCF.
“He’s a talent,” Conner said. “Stan is concerned about being at the top of his game and he’s a leader both on and off the field. “And it’s not always vocal. He works. He comes to practice and when he’s out there, he’s always doing what he supposed to do. He’s one of the guys who does a lot of communicating on the line and that’s why we’ll move him sometime. We had to move him to center one time. He’s a guy that if we need somebody, we’ll put Stan there.”

DAYTONA BEACH -- If preparation is the key to success, then the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats should do well in their season-opener today at Municipal Stadium. The Wildcats have had today's opponent, Alabama State, on their minds throughout camp. "They're going to spread us out, but we've seen it a lot," junior strong safety Brent Davis said this week. "We've been working on it all during camp. We always practice for the team immediately in front of us, so other than going over the basics, we've been working on Alabama State."

The non-conference game is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. Alabama State is coming off a 30-20 loss to B-CU's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Florida A&M. B-CU apparently learned a good bit from that game. "They're very fast and quick," senior left tackle Reubin Mordecai said. "The defensive line has very quick guys. The whole team moves like defensive backs. They run to the ball a lot. They always have all the men to the ball. They run a lot of blitzes."

PINE BLUFF, AK — First-year Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach Monte Coleman said he wanted to raise the profile of his football program, and so far he’s getting his wish. People in Arkansas have been talking about the Golden Lions this week, albeit for all the wrong reasons.

While not quite on par with Arkansas State beating Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, UAPB’s season-opening 21-7 home loss to Division II Arkansas-Monticello grabbed its fair share of attention. This was a program two years removed from playing in its conference championship game and starting the season with optimism to spare, only to fall to a bottom-rung Gulf South Conference program that had won six games in the past three seasons.

So the loss qualified as a shock, one that still stings as the Golden Lions prepare for a much more highly touted Gulf South opponent in Henderson State.

Howard Athletic Director Dwight Datcher is thinking big. While some area football fans might be satisfied that Georgetown and Howard are finally playing each other, Datcher wants the a four-game series between the schools that begins Saturday to be merely the beginning. Whether or not this game develops into a fiercely contested rivalry played at bigger venues remains to be seen. For now, Saturday's matchup at Greene Stadium brings together the only two division I-AA teams in the District and marks the first intra-city game between two division I teams since Georgetown played George Washington on Nov. 25, 1950 at Griffith Stadium.

Though just a little more than three miles separate the schools and each have fielded a football squad for more than a century, this will be the first time they will meet on the field. According to Datcher, who was associate director of athletics at Georgetown before coming to Howard in January 2006, conversations about these two schools playing each other in football have been going on at least 10 years. Now after more than a decade of discussion, the date is finally set.

New-look Valley defense pitched shutout in opener

Mississippi Valley State is halfway home — if 2007 is the measuring stick. And it probably shouldn't be. The Delta Devils are one game away from equaling their win total from last year after a 38-0 victory over Texas College last week. The squad which ranked No. 9 in the SWAC in both scoring defense (29.6 points a game) and total defense (354.6 yards a game) pitched the shutout, allowed just 192 yards and picked off three passes. Valley only had eight interceptions in all of 2007.

"Defensively, we had a lot of changes," MVSU coach Willie Totten said. "We went and got some junior college guys and some very quality high school guys ... where we released a lot of guys. "I like the way they were running to the football. Guys are going where they're supposed to go and doing their assignments."

Morgan State vs. Towson This Saturday!

Morgan State football head coach Donald Hill-Ely will lead the Bears into battle Saturday against the cross-town rivals Towson University. With a 30-37 record, Hill-Ely is the third winningest coach in school history behind legendary coaches Eddie P. Hurt and Earl C. Banks.

College football has officially returned in Baltimore, as the Morgan State Bears will take on the Towson Tigers this Saturday, 6 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium. With just five miles between each school, MSU and Towson hold a recent tradition of playing at least one of their first two games of the season against each other, and this Saturday will mark the 21st matchup between the neighboring rivals.

Last season, quarterback Sean Schaefer completed 20-of-40 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns to help Towson claim their third consecutive win over Morgan, fourth win in the last five years. Towson leads the overall series between the two schools, 15-5. The key for Morgan to break the three-game losing streak will be to contain Schaefer, who completed 29-of-47 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns last week in their 41-13 loss against Navy.

So who are these Norfolk State guys, anyway?

Here are the particulars for tomorrow's opponent:

Norfolk State is the one and only FCS school (only one is allowed) on Kentucky's schedule. The Spartans finished last year 7-2 in their conference (Right behind 10-0 Delaware State) and 8-3 overall. Another school in their conference you may have heard of is Hampton, the former home of basketball transfer Matthew Pilgrim. Having lived in the Norfolk/Newport News/Hampton area for several years, I am familiar with all these colleges and their communities.

Norfolk State has traditionally been a cellar-dweller in the MEAC, although they have recently undergone a bit of turnaround in their football program. Last year's 7-2 mark was their best in many years, despite having the second-toughest strength of schedule in their conference, and the toughest among the top two. Their current head coach, Pete Adrian, took over in 2005, and in two short years turned Norfolk State from a doormat into a very competitive football team, and they were ranked for the first time ever in the FCS (#23 at one point last season). Adrian is continuing to bring talent into the program, as his 2007 recruiting class was ranked 6th among Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

SU deals with short work week

The regular traveling need for the Southern University football team is three buses and an equipment truck. Thursday, though, the team had a fourth bus in its entourage.
That extra bus was for family members of coaches and administrators to get them to Nashville, Tenn., where Southern (0-1) will play Tennessee State (1-0) on Saturday night. This is a small part of making do after a hurricane.

Southern coach Pete Richardson did not want to leave behind his coaches’ families, many of whom are still without power in the wake of Hurricane Gustav. Concern for the families of the coaches and the players, along with the totality of a hectic week begun by Gustav’s Monday landfall, caused Richardson and new SU Chancellor Kofi Lomotey to meet Wednesday night after practice. Officials from both schools chatted that night, but in the end Richardson was able to agree to play the game, despite his misgivings.

FAMU's Marching 100 to perform in halftime show for the Miami Dolphins

Florida A&M's band, The Marching 100, will take advantage of one of a few invitations they have recently received since their numbers have expanded to a whooping 420 members.

Sunday, the hundred has been invited to perform during the halftime show of the NFL's Miami Dolphins opening game. Michael Scott, FAMU's head drum major, said this invitation and the others the band has received shows at least one thing. "It shows hard work pays off," he said.

DOVER, DE — You might think the FAMU football players would be beating themselves up today. They had rallied to tie defending MEAC champion Delaware State at 28-all and force the game into overtime, only to see the Hornets escape with a 35-28 win. Despite the heart-breaking defeat, head coach Joe Taylor and his players were anything but distraught late Thursday night.

Not all losses are created equal. "It was a gallant effort," Taylor said. "I'm proud of these guys. They gave an outstanding effort. I saw enough tonight to let me know we're going to be OK. Because of tonight we will be better." What Taylor saw was the beginning of a two-quarterback system that he hopes will be the Rattlers' calling card in the weeks to come. Curtis Pulley, a redshirt junior who transferred from the University of Kentucky just three weeks ago, came off the bench to spark FAMU.

MEAC teams concerned about Hurricane Hanna

FAMU coach Joe Taylor inherited a decidedly young team when he took over the football program at the end of December. Linebacker and captain Vernon Wilder is the only senior on FAMU's two-deep depth chart. This is marked contrast to Delaware State, FAMU's opponent Thursday night. Five of the Hornets' front six players on defense are seniors, with junior right end Tyron Hurst the only non-senior. On offense DSU started four seniors and five juniors. Senior quarterback Vashon Winton entered Thursday's game with a 25-8 record and a 20-3 mark in MEAC.

The Hornets also had the services of former FAMU running backs coach Renato Diaz. He came to DSU after working under former FAMU coach Rubin Carter.
