Southern University rip Alcorn State Braves
Joseph Jack’s two-hand jam in the waning seconds was insignificant in that it didn’t change the outcome any. The point, rather, of those points was in giving Southern a winning margin of 19 in its 86-67 victory over Alcorn State. That’s the same margin as the Jaguars blew earlier Saturday at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

NCA&T Aggies win 6th straight as Howard falls
Photo: Guard Steve Rush hit 8-of-11 shots to finish with a game-high 24 points. The 5-11/170 senior is from Greensboro, N.C.
GREENSBORO -- The Howard Bison were bigger, stronger and more physical than N.C. A&T. But they had no answers for either the Aggies' press or sharp shooting. A&T spotted Howard an early nine-point lead, but thanks to a strong defensive effort and nine-of-13 shooting from the arc by guards Steven Rush (4-6) and Austin Ewing (5-7), the Aggies cruised to an easy 72-56 win at the Corbett Sports Center on Saturday.
Once the Aggies (11-9, 5-2) started to score, they set up their full-court pressure, which gave the Bison fits. "When we came off the bench with our subs and started to press them, I think we had eight steals at halftime," Eaves said. "We ended up with 13 steals, which is the way we play. I was glad to see that."

Delaware State beats Coppin State, looks ahead to Morgan State
BALTIMORE -- Despite starting a new lineup on Saturday, it wasn't a change in chemistry that Delaware State needed. Instead, it was the same old thing -- the lack of defense -- that nearly cost the Hornets. While the revamped starting five showed it might yield positive results down the road, DSU learned it is defense it needs most after nearly surrendering a 19-point lead in the second half of a 56-48 men's basketball victory over Coppin State at the Coppin Center.
The Hornets' Mid-Eastern win gives DSU (8-11, 5-2) momentum for Monday's game at conference leader Morgan State (7-1 MEAC).

Coach unhappy, but Alabama State Hornets beat Texas Southern
Photo: Senior Joel Bosh, 6-7/185 forward, Dallas, Texas, Dallas Lincoln H.S., scored 15 points along with Junior guard Andrew Hayles to lead the Hornets.
Following Saturday afternoon's game against Texas Southern, Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson wasn't pleased. He criticized his Hornets' defensive effort, talked about their noticeable lack of intensity and stressed the importance of getting better. All around the SWAC, Jackson's fellow coaches are rolling their eyes.
When their teams play that poorly, they lose. ASU was on the good end of an 81-68 game at the Acadome. ASU (11-7, 7-1) shot nearly 60 percent from the field, almost 65percent from behind the 3-point line and outrebounded TSU 30-19.

TSU Lady Tigers beat Austin Peay State University
A furious, late charge fell just short as Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team dropped a 74-72 Ohio Valley Conference decision to Tennessee State, Saturday night, at the Dunn Center. Down 12 points with 2:57 remaining, Austin Peay (5-16, 2-10 OVC) put together an 18-8 run over the final three minutes to nearly escape with the victory. They had one last possession following a jump ball with 2.2 seconds remaining, but sophomore Janay Armstrong’s full-court throw went uncaught and time expired.
Tennessee State (10-12, 7-6 OVC) nearly ran away from Austin Peay just before the final three minutes as they used a 21-4 run over an eight-minute stretch to erase a three-point APSU lead to build a 14-point, 61-47, advantage with 5:44 remaining. Kendra Appling led Tennessee State with 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Obi Okafor added 18 points and Tiffany Jackson chipped in 16 points.

WSSU struggles past FAMU Rattlers
Winston-Salem State broke its three-game losing streak, but by no means was it easy. The Rams stumbled out of the Joel Coliseum Annex last night with a 59-57 victory over Florida A&M. Missed free throws and bad decisions down the stretch nearly cost the Rams. Clinging to a two-point lead with nine seconds left, Roy Peake of the Rams missed a front end of a one-and-one opportunity. The Rattlers got the rebound, went down the court and Leslie Robinson, their best shooter, had a chance to win the game with a wide open 3-point attempt from the left baseline.

Jackson State and Alcorn State still debating Capital City Classic
Jackson State president Ronald Mason Jr. said talks regarding the future of the Capital City Classic are ongoing. JSU and Alcorn State are discussing whether or not to change the current format of the game, in which a board appointed by the two presidents runs the event. The contract with the Capital City Classic board is up for renewal.
"It's a classic, but an unusual classic," Mason said. "A usual classic, you have a promoter that guarantees the schools a certain amount of money. Then they use the game to hold events and make money for themselves." Mason said the two schools usually bring in about $200,000 apiece from the game. Under the current setup, the two schools cover the expenses of the board and split the gate 50-50.

Battle of the Bay: Hampton at Norfolk State in major MEAC battle
Photo: NSU Tony Murphy #5, senior guard, 6-4/220, Eastside HS., Paterson, NJ.
The Spartans are seeking their eighth win in nine games and a chance to maintain their chase of first-place Morgan State. NSU has handed the Bears their only league loss this season. Tony Murphy is the team's top offensive threat at 17.9 ppg, but guard Corey Lyons (15.1 ppg) and Michael Deloach (12.4 ppg) provide balance. Lyons has reached double figures in scoring nine straight games and is shooting 50 percent from the field in that span. NSU is perfect at home this season in six games.
Both teams enter the game with 5-1 MEAC records, one-half game behind first-place Morgan State (6-1) in the conference standings. The game can be heard live on WNSB Hot 91.1 FM in the Hampton Roads area. WNSB's audio stream and live stats are available at the NSU official website, www.nsuspartans.com

Alabama State on road to face TSU and PVAMU
Photo: Alabama State University head men basketball coach Lewis Jackson.
There will be no easy games for the Alabama State basketball team from here on out. The Hornets won't catch any team off-guard. They won't face any uninspired opponents. And they won't be able to sleepwalk through any games. This is what happens when you win five of your first six conference games and outscore your fellow SWAC opponents by an average of 14 points per game.
"We know the target is there," ASU head coach Lewis Jackson said. "Teams always want to knock off the No. 1 team. And that's us right now. We know that the other teams in the conference will be gunning for us. We've been fortunate enough to win some games and get to the top."
For ASU women's coach Freda Freeman-Jackson, pushing seems to be all she's doing lately. Following the loss of forward Tanika Jackson to a season-ending knee injury (the fifth ASU player to be lost to a knee injury this season), the Lady Hornets have struggled badly.
