Fayetteville State Cancels Football Game against Elizabeth City State Vikings

Football
FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina  – Hurricane Florence had a major impact on the city of  Fayetteville, the North Carolina seaboard and the major arteries connected to it.

Due to the flooding and road closures in-and-around Fayetteville, the Department of Athletics at Fayetteville State University has canceled this weekend's CIAA football game against Elizabeth City State University.

"I applaud the efforts of campus facilities and those of the surrounding community with the attempt to get things back to normal," said Director of Athletics Anthony Bennett. "I do not want to put our student-athletes in any dangerous situations with the road closures in trying to return to campus."

In addition to the canceled football game, Fayetteville State has also pulled its participation in this weekend's CIAA Volleyball Roundup (Richmond, Va.) and the cross country meet at Wingate University.

TSU Women's Basketball Assistant Coach Ronnie Enoch on a Mission to send 100 Pairs of Shoes to Cuba

Women's Basketball Assistant Coach Ronnie Enoch on a Mission to send 100 Pairs of Shoes to CubaNASHVILLE, Tennessee -- Tennessee State University women’s basketball assistant coach Ronnie Enoch is on a mission to send 100 pairs of shoes to Cuba for children in need.

In August, Enoch participated in a mission trip to Cuba where he, along with other coaches, ran basketball camps for the youth in the area.

“My mission trip to Cuba changed my spirit and outlook on life,” said Enoch. “During a basketball clinic, it broke my heart to see kids not having shoes and socks. So when I returned, I asked friends to help me send 100 pairs of shoes & socks to Cuba in October.”

After posting his goal on Twitter, Enoch immediately received and outpouring of support from friends, coaches and businesses. Profeet in Burlington, N.C. donated 100 pairs of socks while The Delta foundation donated 20 basketballs. Coaches and other professionals have contributed shoes and t-shirts.

With only 16 days left in the campaign, Enoch is more than halfway to the shoe goal.

“We need 45 more pairs of tennis shoes to get to 100.”

Individuals interested in making a donation can bring them to the women’s basketball offices, located on the third floor of the Gentry Center before Oct.5.

PVAMU Panthers Look For Winning SWAC Start At UAPB

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- The Prairie View A&M University football team will look for a winning start to Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday night at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Panther Sports Network radio broadcast begins at 5:30 p.m. with Panthers Countdown To Kickoff online at pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork, prior to kickoff at 6 p.m.

Both teams (PVAMU 1-3, UAPB 1-2) will open league play in a matchup of two of the SWAC's five new head coaches in the Panthers' Eric Dooley and the Golden Lions' Cedric Thomas (formerly Alcorn State's defensive coordinator).

GAME NOTES
PVAMU SPORTS NETWORK
LIVE STATS

Dooley understands the importance of getting off to fast start in conference play. Having coached in the SWAC's Western Division his entire career as an assistant coach, he knows how tightly contested the division has been. Since divisional play began in 1999, only three times (2006, 2011, 2013) has the West champ had two or more losses. In the other 16 years, the West Division champion went undefeated seven times, including Prairie View A&M's 9-0 mark in 2009 en route to the SWAC Championship.

"Things have changed," said Dooley of the Panthers opening SWAC play after four non-conference games. "You always take the field to give your best no matter what. Within this conference now, and especially in the West, it's been a tough deal and you don't want to get behind. I think more than anything now, in this conference on both sides, you can't afford to get behind in the standings. The competition is strong this year. We look for a great challenge."

The Golden Lions opened the season with a home loss to Morehouse (34-30) followed by a home win over Cumberland (55-0). Last week, UAPB lost at #3 South Dakota State 90-6.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff leads the SWAC in total offense at 472.0 yards per game. QB Shannon Patrick is second in the league in both passing yards (678) and touchdown passes (six), and has yet to throw an interception in two games. He did not play last week at South Dakota State due to an injury. WR Josh Wilkes leads the SWAC in receptions (18), receiving yards (500), and touchdowns (four). Defensively, safely Shawn Steele is tied for third in tackles (26), and defensive lineman Kevin Agee is first in sacks (3.0)

"They have a lot of skill guys that can play and can run," Dooley said of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. "I never look at scores. Each game dictates different things based on who you are playing and where you are playing and circumstances. I know it's going to be a well-coached football team by a guy who's been in a championship program and coached championship teams). He understands what the ingredients are. We expect a well-coached team and a hard-fought game."

Former Edward Waters Tiger Becomes Viral Sensation

JONESBORO, Georgia -- It has been a whirlwind past few days for Darrian Carmicheal since an article was published in the September 10th edition of USA Today.

Carmicheal, who is the offensive line coach at Jonesboro High School in Clayton County, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta, has come up with a creative and unique way to reward his offensive linemen for their on-field success.

You've heard of Miami's Turnover Chain, the N. W. O. (Nasty Wide Outs) championship belt at Ole Miss, and the "Savage" shoulder pads at Georgia. Well, Carmicheal's reward system maybe the most innovative, yet delicious of them all.

Whenever his offensive linemen get a "pancake block", which is a term used to describe a block that leaves a defensive lineman on their back, Carmicheal will pour a shot of pancake syrup in the mouths of his O-Linemen.

News Photo

News of Carmicheal's exploits have been spread throughout the country on several sports media outlets including ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and SB Nation to name a few and has he has earned a new nickname, "Coach Syrup".

When asked about how it feels to be an overnight viral sensation, Carmicheal replied, "It feels great. I never thought it would happen to me. It's crazy how you can wake up one day and see your face on TV and hear your name everywhere."

Carmicheal is a former football student-athlete and four-year starter at Edward Waters as an offensive lineman, a 2015 graduate of EWC with a degree in Education, and is a proud member of the Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Also upon his graduation from Edward Waters, Carmicheal was also selected as a member of the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society as being a key contributor to his team as a starter and achieving over a 3.2 grade point average during his senior season.

ROLLA, Missouri  – A pair of 2-1 teams will face off for the first time ever Saturday afternoon as Missouri S&T begins the second half of its four-game road stretch with a trip to Tuskegee, Ala., to face Tuskegee University in its final non-conference game of the year.

The Miners are coming off their first loss of the season as they dropped a 52-12 decision Saturday at Drake, while Tuskegee has won two straight after suffering an opening night loss to Alabama State – who like Drake, hails from the NCAA Division I FCS ranks.  The Golden Tigers rallied for a 24-17 victory at Clark Atlanta to move over the .500 mark on the young season.

Saturday's game is S&T's last non-conference game of the year prior to its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Sept. 29 at Southwest Baptist and with a win this weekend, the Miners would post a winning record in non-conference play for the first time since 2012.

ABOUT THE MINERS: Missouri S&T was held to 175 yards of total offense and gave up 452 through the air as It lost for the first time this season Saturday at Drake.  The Miners allowed long touchdown passes on each of Drake's first two possessions of the contest as Bulldog quarterback Grant Kraemer finished the game with six scoring passes.

Running back Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) scored the Miners' lone offensive touchdown on a three-yard run in the second quarter, while S&T's other score came when Roderick Chapman (Los Angeles, CA/Jefferson) returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown.  The return helped Chapman earn GLVC player of the week honors on special teams as he became the first player in program history to return a kickoff, punt and interception for a touchdown in his career.

Defensively, Chapman leads the GLVC in passes defended with six and has S&T's lone interception on the season, while Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City) heads the conference list in tackles for a loss with five, including 2.5 sacks.  Linebacker Bo Brooks (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) has a team-high 24 tackles, while Wharton and Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) have 20 apiece.

Deramus, who got the start at quarterback last week, threw three touchdown passes in the win and earned player of the week honors from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  He completed 10-of-17 passes for 209 yards and threw five of those completions to Javarrius Cheathum for 105 yards and the two touchdowns.

The Golden Tigers ran for 128 yards in the win -- led by Ivonte Patterson's 62 -- and are averaging 153 yards on the ground over their first three contests of the season.  As a team, Tuskegee is averaging 376.3 yards per game on offense while the defensive unit has given up just 241.7 yards a contest.

"It's exciting to continue our rivalry with Hampton," Nickelberry commented. "We're looking forward to it."

Before the Bison close out 2018, they meet Patrick Ewing and the revamped Georgetown Hoyas inside the Capital One Arena.

In the middle of the competitive conference schedule, Howard wraps up its non-conference slate with a talented Harvard squad, who finished 18-14 overall during the 2017-18 campaign.

"We have some marquee games [this year]," Nickelberry added. "We can compete in those games and [we will] see where we stand against very talented teams like Southern Illinois, Georgetown, and Harvard."

This season, junior Charles Williams (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore RJ Cole (Union, N.J.) spearhead the Bison attack, combining for more than 44 points per game a year ago while garnering All-Conference First Team accolades.

Howard's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule begins January 2019.

'Fly high Tray': Hundreds of mourners remember slain Morgan State basketball star at her funeral

Tracey
TRACEY CARRINGTON
2014-15 SENIOR SEASON
MORGAN STATE ATHLETICS
BALTIMORE, Maryland -- Before she was fatally shot, Tracey Carrington wrote on her Facebook page, “Be patient while you build your brand.”

At her funeral services Tuesday in Mondawmin, Carrington’s former teacher reminded the onetime Morgan State basketball star’s loved ones of that post.

“Baby girl, your brand is built,” Sidney Brooks said, gesturing to the hundreds of mourners in attendance.

Friends, family and mentors spilled into the aisles and out to the hall of the funeral home Tuesday, where they came to say a final goodbye to Carrington.

On Sept. 6, Carrington, of Dundalk, was gunned down by an unknown assailant while she was leaving a sports bar on Belair Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Some mourners came decked Tuesday in brightly colored shirts and jerseys featuring photos of the West Baltimore native or phrases such as “Fly high Tray” — referring to one of Carrington’s many nicknames.

While several speakers acknowledged anger over the circumstances surrounding the 25-year-old’s death, many made a point to say judgment was for God and that Tuesday would only be about love.

PVAMU Recap: Dooley Reviews UNLV Game; SWAC Play Begins This Week At UAPB

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Prairie View A&M University head coach Eric Dooley addressed the media Monday on the SWAC Football Head Coaches Teleconference.

PVAMU (1-3) lost at UNLV 46-17 Saturday night in Las Vegas in the final non-conference game of the season.

The Panthers open Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday in a 6 p.m. game at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-2). The Golden Lions are coming off a 90-6 loss at #3-ranked South Dakota St.

The Panther Sports Network radio broadcast begins at 5:30 p.m. with Panthers Countdown To Kickoff online at pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork.

ON GAME VS. UNLV: "We went up and played another FBS opponent, and of course, we accept the challenge. It was a good football team that we had to face. It was a long trip in a different time zone. Nevertheless, we were able to go out and compete. We had some challenges in the first half of the game. We kind of settled down and got some things behind us and had some things to move forward that were positive for us. I think the most important thing was we were able to finish the game strong, competitive-wise, and health-wise.

ON WHAT WAS LEARNED ABOUT THE TEAM DURING THE NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE: "The thing I like about the guys that I have here is they are going to fight for 60 minutes. They are going to continue to lay it on the line, regardless of who we play and where we play. I'm very excited to see the effort from these guys and how they lay it on the line each and every game."

ON LONG-SNAPPING ISSUES ON SPECIAL TEAMS: "We understand that. That's a problem that we have to fix. We know we've been having a lot of mistakes with that.  We've been fortunate enough in a couple of ball games we've been able to stay within the game, but that has been an Achilles heel for us. We know we have to continue to press upon that and get better. There's no question about that. We're moving into conference play, and it's no question about it; it's something we have to fix. We look at all three phases of it. That's one that is standing out right now. Of course, we're going to work to get better with those individuals because that's what we must do. That's a huge turnaround when you look at games that we have played. It has accumulated a lot points (for the opponents). We are working to get that taken care of."

INITIAL THOUGHS ON UAPB: "I see a team that continued to fight, regardless of what the outcome of the game was. I know their coach (Cedric Thomas) has been a part of a good program (at Alcorn) for the past three years, so he understands the process that it takes to win. What happened on Saturday is not something we have to play close attention to because I know it's going to be a well-prepared team that is going to play for 60 minutes as well."

NOTABLES VS. UNLV:

  • RB Dawonya Tucker continues to lead the all of Division I in rushing with 603 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed 12 times for 61 yards last week.
  • WR Kalen Riles tied a career-high in receptions (four), and had career highs in receiving yards (134) and longest reception (61 yards).
  • WR Xavier Johnson had his first career reception in the first quarter.
