UMES Hawks Head North of the Border

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland  The University of Maryland Eastern Shores basketball team will travel to Montreal, Canada for a week beginning this Friday through next Thursday (Aug. 10-16).
The Hawks will play in four exhibition games during their trip and also get a chance to tour various sites throughout Montreal and neighboring cities and provinces.
This trip is a big benefit for us because we got the opportunity to spend ten days practicing prior and the games will be the icing on the cake, Coach Clifford Reed said. Also, the experience of traveling abroad is an invaluable educational experience for the team.
Eastern Shore will feature five new players to the program this season  Canaan BartleyBryan UrrutiaMarlon AdamsGabriel Gyamfi, andAJ Cheeseman  and the extra practice should help them gel with the returners from last years team.
I think going to Canada is definitely going to help our chemistry and camaraderie as a team, guard Ryan Andino said. The trip also gives us a chance to work on the new plays we have and that will benefit us going into the preseason.
Andino, along with forwards Dontae Caldwell and Isaac Taylor, will be returning to the lineup this season after injury kept them out a season ago.
The trip to Canada will serve as a team bonding experience for the Hawks in addition to extra exhibition games.
Guys will be more comfortable with each other after the trip, Taylor said. As we become a family off the court that will help us play better on the court.
The games played over the next week will not count to the Hawks win-lost record this season, so the message will be to get better each day.
Im a process driven person, Reed said. I just want us to be the best we possibly can be in each moment, possession, and day.
Following the Canada trip the Hawks will not face outside competition until the 10-Mile Tipoff versus Salisbury University on Nov. 1.

ASU Hornets overcome sluggish start and Bahamas heat to pull out victory

NASSAU, Bahamas | Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson was genuinely concerned following Wednesday night's contest in the Bahamas as to how his team would react less than 24 hours later when they faced the Bahamas All-Stars.

The concern lingered until the fourth quarter when Alabama State was able to pull away down the stretch with some key free throws, pulling out a 97-88 victory over a pesky All-Star team at the Kendall Isaacs Gymnasium Thursday night.  Reginald Gee paced three players in double figures for the Hornets with 19 points, including hitting on 10-of-11 free throws, while Tobi Ewuosho added 18. Branden Johnson chipped in with 14, with 10 of his coming in the second half, while Kevin Holston added nine in the win.

Alabama State took an early lead, before the Bahamas All-Stars came back and actually took a lead in the second half, before the Hornets used an 82.9 (29-of-35) percent night at the free throw line to pull away. Therrell Gosier II hit five of six free throws down the stretch, and Gene Davis connected on all five his opportunities to help the Hornets at the line.

The Hornets were tied for much of the contest and found a little breathing room coming out in the third quarter when Tobi Ewuosho followed up a miss from the outside, soaring through three defenders for a follow-up dunk that brought all the fans in the arena to their feet - including non-Alabama State fans. Alabama State built off that momentum to take a six-point lead until the All-Stars stormed back and took a one-point lead midway through the third quarter.

Gee came off the bench in that quarter and scored six of his 19 points to help push Alabama State out to the lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Ewuosho added 16 of his 18 points in the second half to help lead the Hornets.

Alabama State converted on 12-of-14 free throws in the second half to help the seal the win.

Prior to the contest, the Hornets were able to explore the Melia Nassau Resort - their home through Saturday night - which included the beach and pools. The team was able to get on their own during the day until they came together for a meal at The Grille located inside the resort before heading to the arena for the contest.

They will have an off day Friday, heading as a team into downtown Nassau to explore the city and learn more of the culture of the Bahamas as they continue their international tour. The team will return to action Saturday night against the CTG Knights, as they share the island with Notre Dame and Kentucky this week, as they tip at 7 pm inside Kendall Isaacs Gymnasium for their final game.

Competitive Camp Continues For PVAMU Panther Football

tfbi - onlinePRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Prairie View A&M football continues to prepare for the 2018 season opener, with the seeds planted earlier in the calendar year that are showing up daily in practice.

Coverage of Panthers Training Camp on pvpanthers.com is sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance. Texas Farm Bureau Members can receive free tickets to Panther home athletics contests by showing proof of membership at the PVAMU Ticket Office. Panther Nation can visit the local Texas Farm Bureau Agent in Waller to become a member today.

The mantra for first-year head coach Eric Dooley is simple – spot the ball. Place it anywhere on the field, and his team will be ready. Within that theme is a characteristic that began when Dooley was hired and met with his team, through the spring and now here in August – competition; battling against your teammate in individual and team drills, and ultimately, completing for playing time.

"For the most part, everyone is out here competing and understands the big picture," Dooley said. "I think they've done a good job in all phases. No one has a job that has been promised to them, so we're still in that stage of evaluation. We'll make those decisions as time continues to draw near, but I think the guys are doing a great job of competing every day."

Prairie View A&M continue to prepare for the August 25 game at Rice with a Thursday morning practice at Panther Stadium.

"I thought it was a good practice today," Dooley said. "I thought we had good execution on both sides of the ball and in special teams. Although it's deep in the week, the guys continue to work hard and show a lot of energy. The effort part is still there."

The Panthers will practice Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

JSU Tigers Continue to Build on 1st Scrimmage

Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South presents “THEE MERGE” on Sunday, August 19th, 2018 at 5:00 PM in the AAC. Tickets are as followed: $5.00 Student, $10.00 General, $15.00 Media Passes ( No Pass, No Camera ). For more information contact the Music Department at 601-979-2141

JACKSON, Mississippi -- The first week of fall camp is a get-to-know-you-type of situation. It’s the first time the coaching staff can have their team on the practice field and begin evaluating the team.

It’s also an opportunity for the student-athletes to begin to further their understanding of the installation of the Air Raid Offense and the 3-3-5 Stack Defense.

Jackson State head football coach Tony Hughes isn’t focused on the depth chart yet, but he’s liked what he’s so far.

“The first couple weeks is really about teaching and getting your football team ready,” Hughes said. “We aren’t going to start establishing the first team and second team until later in camp. But, I’ve been proud to see the older guys taking on leadership roles and not taking plays off and living in the moment. It sets a great example for the younger guys on the team.”

One of the themes early in camp is the heat. With the heat index, well over the 100-degree mark, the Tigers have been taking necessary water breaks to stay hydrated.

“We have to stay hydrated,” Hughes said. “If we want to practice our best, we have to take care of ourselves. That doesn’t just include the student-athletes, that’s the trainers and coaches too.”

The Tigers return to practice Thursday and will build to its first scrimmage that’s set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Payton Center.

FAMU to play first scrimmage Saturday in Quincy

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- The last time Willie Simmons stepped onto Corry Field in Quincy for competitive action, he was a lighting up the Friday night sky with his passing and running abilities as senior at Shanks High School.

After his glory years in the late 1990s, he enjoyed a stellar collegiate career playing quarterback at Clemson and The Citadel. He then experienced success as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State and Alcorn State. His winning ways later continued as a head coach at Prairie View A&M.

All the while, he's kept Quincy close to his heart.

On Saturday, the Florida A&M football coach returns to his old stomping grounds. The Rattlers will play their first scrimmage of the preseason at Corry Field.

This is a free event and will begin at 3:30 p.m.

"I'm excited to get back where I cut my teeth playing football," Simmons said. "I think it will be a great deal for the alumni base to see the guys up close and personal. It will be nostalgic to see the field painted and people in the stands."

Audit: Why did $300,000 in band fees end up in personal accounts of former SU band director?

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- An audit by the Southern University System is questioning why about $300,000 in band camp and other fees wound up in the personal bank accounts of Nathan Haymer, the school's former band director.

The findings have been turned over to the offices of East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III and Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera, officials said Thursday.

Haymer was fired by the school on May 1 amid accusations that he requested kickbacks for the band to appear at an event for schoolchildren.

Haymer has denied the claims.

He could not be reached for comment Thursday on the latest issue.

Haymer's attorney, Karl Bernard of New Orleans, reviewed the audit after being asked to do so by a reporter.

With a championship pedigree, Southern tailback Devon Benn gets his chance at a star turn

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- In Devon Benn’s first two years at John Curtis, the football program won state championships.

Over the next two years, Benn rushed for almost 2,400 yards and 26 touchdowns.

He had become used to winning, and used to playing a starring role.

But as he arrived at Southern University in 2016, Benn knew nothing would come easy for him. More than anything else, Benn’s freshman season was a waiting period.

“I came into Southern with a mindset of, ‘I’m ready to play now,’ which I developed at Curtis,” he said Monday as the Jaguars began their second week of preseason camp.

That year, however, Benn practiced during the week and mostly stood on the sideline during games, learning from a player he called “big bro” — Lenard Tillery, who became the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s all-time leading rusher.

Watching Tillery motivated Benn to be a better player.

S.C. State Preseason Practice Brief

ALLMEACFOOTBALLORANGEBURG, South Carolina -- The Bulldogs of South Carolina State conducted their first preseason drill in full pads Wednesday and the session was very enthusiastic despite the added weight, according to head coach Buddy Pough.

"Our first day in full pads turned out to be a nice little practice," Pough said. "We didn't go live in a lot of drills but our players continued to work hard and show enthusiasm, which is satisfying to the coaches. Despite not having a lot of live action, we wanted to see how the players handled working out in full pads for the first time.

"A lot the players picked up things pretty well and demonstrated that they belong and that they will be able to help us this fall," continued Pough. "But, most of all, I was pleased that we made an effort to protect each other as we want to avoid any early injuries."

Pough said the mission for preseason drills is to improve day-by-day and put a solid team on the field in September. He also noted that, in addition to holding drills inside O.C. Dawson Stadium which has turf, that the team has also begun working out on the practice field, which has grass.

"We play our first two games (against Georgia Southern Sept. 1 and UCF Sept 8) on grass so we feel it's important that we get in some work on grass so we will be acclimated to it when the season starts," he noted.

SC State resumes drills Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Pough's team will also practice at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, which is a change from the schedule which had the drill originally set for 9 a.m., according to the Bulldog mentor.

TSU Tiger Camp 2018: Day 6 - Offensive Linemen

NASHVILLE, Tennessee --  The Tennessee State offensive line returns four starters from a season ago and expect to regain their form from 2016 where they were the anchor to the top scoring team in the Ohio Valley Conference. Ty Allen is the lone departing starter from a season ago. Allen started the first four games of the season at center in place of an injured Thomas Burton. Once the Tigers original center returned, Allen returned to his home at right guard.

Burton, Jamahl Jelks, Chidi Okeke and Justin Brooks all return as starters. Burton will anchor the trenches at center for the fourth year and will be flanked by Lachavious Simmons at left guard. Simmons played in all 11 games, starting six at various spots, a year ago. Okeke will spend hiss econd season at right tackle after transfering from LSU.

The right side of the line will have competition as transfer Raekwon Allen will battle Jelks and Brooks for time. Newcomers Jamahl Covington, Raymond Horton and Marlon Black, Jr. will provide depth. Redshirt freshman Anthony Geter impressed during his first year with the Tigers and will push Burton for time at center.

TSU spent the offseason building a deep unit in the trenches. The Tigers entered camp with 18 linemen and look to put themselves in a position to reload for years to come. Demetrius Cooley, Noah Shattuck, Herman Joseph, Myles Sails, Cedrick Banks, Anthony Williams, Tyrese Thornton and Keith Thomas bring the ability to solidify the line for the near future.

- On the Success of the Line through the Beginning of Camp
“Coach E (Ehrenfeld) is just trying to instill a different mindset. We are going to smack somebody in the mouth every time we come off the ball. It is a grind. There is a passion to the offensive line. You have to want to come out here every day and block a person.”

S.C. State Bulldogs Close Out Canadian Foreign Tour

8148MONTREAL, CANADA — The South Carolina State men's basketball team closed out their four-day Canadian Foreign Tour playing three of the top teams in Canada.

"This has been an outstanding trip and experience for our basketball team.  To come and compete in August against some of top teams in Canada. I want to thank our administration for allowing us to start our pre-season in this manner, "said head coach Murray Garvin. "Our guys will never forget the memories we made and the sites that they were able to see while in Montreal & Quebec."

During their time in Canada the Bulldogs had a chance to visit historic sites such as Mount Royal Park, Old Montreal, and tour of the beautiful Quebec City just to name a few.

Along with their commitment to play in the scheduled exhibition games, the men's basketball team and coaching staff took time out of their busy schedule to give back to the city of Montreal by visiting Sun Youth Community Center and conducted a basketball clinic for underprivileged children. Coach Garvin closed the session with a motivational speech stressing the importance of an education and reminded students that " A dream without a plan is just a dream."  The team then took pictures with the children and signed autographs.

South Carolina State exhibition tour included competing against three of the top teams in the Quebec province. Queen's University (88-93 Overtime, Loss), University of Laval (84-93, Loss) and Concordia University (74-80, Loss). All three games were played consecutively.

"Playing on the road and under FIBA rules for the first time gave our team valuable game si
mulation in early August," said Garvin. "We were able to see things that we need to improve and also a lot of positive that we can build on."

In all three contests, the Bulldogs either held a lead or competed to the wire on the home court of each opponent.  "I must admit that the only thing we didn't get was a win on the scoreboard, however we won in every other aspect", says Garvin

Garvin stated, "I would like to personally thank our parents, Alumni Hank Allen and his wife who made the trip to support the team. I am super proud of our guys and how hard they competed on this tour.  We look forward to the season and the preparation it will take to get to the winner's circle of the MEAC Tournament in March."

Ed Hardin: A&T's Sam Washington leading a seamless transition after a perfect season

GREENSBORO, North Carolina — Sam Washington has been given the keys to a Ferrari.

And he's not going to change a thing.

The new head football coach at A&T walked off the practice field this morning just as he'd done countless times. But this time, he wasn't headed to a defensive team meeting or film session or to Rod Broadway's office to talk football. He had reporters waiting for him.

A&T VS. JACKSONVILLE STATE

When: 7 p.m. Aug. 25.

Where: Montgomery, Ala.
TV: ESPN.

"It feels wonderful," Washington said. "Just to be out here once again, smelling the grass, smelling the equipment and watching the kids fly around. It's a good thing."

Some things never change, and summertime football practice is one of the things Washington never wants to change. But there's a different feel to it now. Broadway has retired to a life of fishing and has left the program to his former defensive coordinator. Washington ackowledges that this is, in fact, very different for him personally.
