HARTLEY, Delaware -- Alcorn State University maintained its position in the HSRN Division 1 Poll. while Virginia Union University tied Tuskegee University for first place in HSRN's Division II/NAIA Poll following five full weeks of HBCU football action.
Alcorn State won its fourth straight contest of the season, defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 61-14, in Little Rock. VUU's Panthers took advantage of Tuskegee's first loss of the season to vault into a tie with the Golden Tigers for the #1 spot in HSRN's DivisionII/NAIA Poll.
The Braves have averaged nearly 50 points per game since their season-opening loss to Georgia Tech.
North Carolina A&T remained in second place following a 45-31 road win at Hampton. South Carolina State and Bethune-Cookman swapped positions from last week with Tennessee State completing the top five.
Morgan State made its first appearance in the poll, entering at #10.
In Division II, Tuskegee's unbeaten streak was broken and Virginia Union got enough points to tie the Golden Tigers for first place. The Panthers have been hovering near the top spot for most of the season. Both Tuskegee and Virginia Union were in North Carolina last weekend. TU lost at UNC-Pembroke while VUU was knocking off Shaw in Durham.
North Carolina was also good to Bowie State with the Bulldogs remaining in third, thanks to a win over Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte.
Chowan rolled into fourth position with its third straight win, a 27-24 road victory over Winston-Salem State. Virginia State held onto the fifth spot as CIAA schools grabbed six of the top seven positions in the poll.
