SALISBURY, North Carolina -- The Elizabeth City State Vikings got back on a winning track with a 41-6 thrashing of Livingstone College Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
The Vikings withstood a downpour of rain in the first half and muddied field conditions to earn their first CIAA victory of the season.
Stephen Williams again led the charge for the Viking defenders with a game high 11 tackles, including one for a loss of four yards and a fumble recovery.
ECSU’s defense did not allow the Blue Bears past midfield until their final (ninth) offensive set of the first half, a drive that ended with a Justin Beatty interception at the Viking 25 yard line.
After their first two cracks on offense ended with a punts, ECSU finally got on the scoreboard with a 4-yard rush by Antonio Huff with 3:15 left in the opening quarter. On the Blue Bears’ ensuing drive and just over a minute later, Malcolm Cherry picked of a Drew Powell pass and returned it 30 yards for a score and ECSU took a two touchdown lead (14-0) with 2:19 left in the first.
The scoring onslaught continued at the 1:03 mark when Daquan Neal faked the handoff and ran a bootleg in from 4 yards out for a 21-0 Viking advantage.
Five of Livingstone’s first half drives ended on either a fumble (3) or an interception. The Blue Bears’ first two drives of the second half also ended with interceptions; Breon Bailey clipped their first drive of the third quarter, picking off LC quarterback Drew Powell for the third time, this time at the Livingstone 42 yard line.
One play later, Neal found Montario Hunter from 42 yards out and a 34-0 score. Those two would hook up again on the Vikings’ next offensive drive, this this time on a 12 yard passing touchdown and the score ballooned to 41-0 in favor of ECSU.
Hunter’s second touchdown reception of the day was set up by a Fuquonn Thompson interception with 11:28 to go in the third quarter.
Livingstone’s most productive drive of the day came in the fourth quarter when Jalen Hendricks broke for a 47 yard run down to the ECSU 41 yard line. Aided by two Viking penalties, the Blue Bears were able to capitalize with their only score of the game, a 13 yard pass from Powell to William Tatum. The two point attempt failed and the score held there for a final of 41-6.
ECSU (3-1, CIAA 1-1) will return home for a two game stand, beginning with Virginia State University on Saturday, October 10th. Game time is scheduled for 1pm at Roebuck Stadium.
