Morehouse Maroon Tigers Tame CAU Panthers

ATLANTA, Georgia  -- The Maroon Tigers started slow, but finished strong, with a 23-13 win over the Clark Atlanta Panthers.

Clark Atlanta jumped out to a 7-0 lead, early in the first quarter, when quarterback Matthew Vincent broke loose for 54 yards and scored CAU's first rushing touchdown of the season.\

The lead held until midway through the second quarter. That's when Morehouse exploded for three touchdowns and a safety, to pull ahead for good, at 23-7.

Amyr Smith caught an 18-yard pass from Monqavious Johnson,Christopher Hambie recorded a sack in the end zone for a safety, Johnson scored on a 10-yard run and Lake McGuffiecaught a seven-yard pass, to cap the second quarter scoring barrage.   

CAU scored a too-little-too-late touchdown in the fourth quarter. The 60-yard scoring drive was aided by four questionable pass interference calls that netted the Panthers 52 yards.

Linebacker James Woods spearheaded the Morehouse defensive pressure that held the Panthers to 59 rushing yards. Woods recorded three sacks and seven tackles. Christopher Hambie led the Tigers with nine tackles and a sack. Hambie, with 42 tackles, and Woods, with 41, lead the team.

Freshman Amyr Smith piled up 94 all-purpose yards, catching four passes for 37 yards and returning three kickoffs for 57 yards.

The Maroon Tigers travel to Columbus, Ga., next Saturday, at 2 p.m., to play the Tuskegee Golden Tigers, in the oldest HBCU rivalry in college football.
