Second half defensive stance leads Golden Rams’ rally past Miles

FAIRFIELD, Alabama -- Sophomore safety Nick Scott led a stingy second-half defense to propel the Albany State Golden Rams to a 29-16 comeback win over Miles College. With the victory, ASU improves its overall record to 2-3 and remains unbeaten in the SIAC at 2-0.

The Golden Bears, who led 14-0 at halftime, fall to 1-4, 1-1.

With less than three minutes off the game clock, Miles scored the game's first points when Jamarcus Nance scored on a 10-yard run for a 7-0 lead. Nance caught a 34-yard pass from David Whipple with 12:48 left in the second quarter to give the Golden Bears a 14-0 edge. That advantage would hold until halftime, as Albany State found it difficult to score against the home team's lightning quick defense.

In the third stanza, Albany State finally got on the scoreboard with a 9-play, 46-yard drive that used 5:36. Dalviness Green ran the final three yards to score his second touchdown of the year, and help cut the ASU deficit to 14-7 with 3:52 remaining.

Two minutes later, the Golden Rams' "Dirty Blue" Defense started flexing its muscles and forced Miles into a safety to generate a 14-9 score. Another MC special teams' error on a punting play resulted in Scott recovering the ball for ASU in the end zone for a touchdown with 16 seconds left in the period.

Jarvis Small, who recorded his third 100-yard game of the season, extended Albany State's edge to 23-14 with 7:13 left in the game. The junior running back's 2-yard run capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive that used 6:43.

ASU cemented its second half surge by ending with a defensive play. Marquez Hodo intercepted a pass from Whipple and returned it 39-yard for a touchdown and a 29-14 lead. The attempted PAT was blocked, and Miles' Jabril Cox returned it to account for the final score of the game.

Small finished with 111 yards on 26 carries. Greene carried the ball 14 times for 78 yards of his own. The "Gold Rush" Offense only mustered 289 total yards, but controlled the possession of the game for 37:39 of the 60 minutes.

Defensively, Scott and Tavarius Washington led the way with five tackles apiece. Zavondric Shingleton and Zane Fields each had four tackles. Kelderion Miller joined Hodo by also recording an interception. Hodo also had two pass breakups.

Albany State will be open next week and won't return to action until Oct. 17 when it hosts the Morehouse Maroon Tigers at the ASU Coliseum. The contest will be play during the university's annual homecoming celebration. Kickoff is schedule for 2 p.m.
