Texas Southern Tigers capture 49-21 road victory over MVSU

ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- Texas Southern University Tigers football found themselves back in the winners column after a convincing 49-21 win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium.

Averion Hurts threw six touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead Texas Southern to a 49-21 victory over Mississippi Valley State.

Hurts was 19 of 24 for 311 yards passing. He threw three scoring strikes to Derrick Griffin, and one touchdown pass to Larry Clark III and Steven Carpenter each. Hurts also ran for 68 yards on 14 carries with a 5-yard touchdown run. Griffin caught seven passes for 178 yards, and Clark had four catches for 61 yards.

"This was a must win for our team to get us back on track going into next week," said TSU head coach Darrell Asberry. "Now we must start to prepare for a very talented Southern Jaguars football team."

MVSU's Ruban Thurston Jr. threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Keenan Daniels to pull Mississippi Valley State to 28-21 early in the third quarter.

Hurts answered with touchdown passes of 36 and 22 yards to Griffin, and a 10-yarder to Clark to seal it for the Tigers.
