TSU falls to Eastern Illinois in OT

NASHVILLE, Tennessee -- Ronald Butler stepped in at quarterback for Tennessee State and kept the Tigers in Saturday’s game against Eastern Illinois with his ability to run the football.

But Butler also cost TSU in overtime when he threw an interception at the goal line giving the Panthers a 25-22 win.

The loss came at Nissan Stadium in the Tigers’ homecoming before a crowd of 22,144.

It was the fourth consecutive loss to EIU for TSU (3-3, 0-3 OVC).

The Panthers (3-3, 3-0) had scored on the first possession in overtime on a 26-yard field goal by Nick Bruno.

EIU safety Jourdan Wickliffe then jumped at the goal line on third down to pick off Butler’s last pass.

“I looked to my playmaker (Patrick Smith), and I shouldn’t have,” said Butler, who completed 12 of 28 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries and another TD.

“I should have known the safety was over top, and I just made a stupid decision to throw the ball. I should have been smarter than that. I should have thrown the ball away and still given my team a chance to win the game.
