First look at UMES Hawks comes at Hysteria

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -- During last week’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference media teleconference, a reporter asked second-year Hawks coach Bobby Collins what he was going to do this year to prove that last season wasn’t a fluke.

That’s one that left him scratching his head. Not because he didn’t have an answer, but because he didn’t agree with the fundamental premise.

“When you win 18 games I don’t think that’s a fluke,” Collins said.

His team worked hard. The players bought into a new system.

They came together as a family and they turned some heads in the process. Because the program has lacked success for so long, he understands that people are wary to get behind the Hawks.

That doesn’t mean he has to like it — or accept it.
