DSU Hornets Visit Sunshine State for MEAC Clash with FAMU

Delaware State (0-5; 0-2 MEAC wraps up a two-game road swing with a visit to Florida A&M in a MEAC battle of teams seeking their first win of the season. The Hornets (0-5; 0-2 MEAC) are coming off a 21-7 loss at Hampton last Saturday. Quarterback Gil Rivera came off the bench to replace injured Esayah Obado and completed 14-of-24 passes for a career-high 183 yards; and scored the Hornets’ only touchdown on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter. Delaware State head coach Kenny Carter has announced that Rivera will get the starting nod at Florida A&M. WRAris Scott had a career day for DSU, catching seven passes for 140 yards vs. Hampton, the most by a Hornet receiver since 2013.  

Defensively, linebacker Rashawn Barrett led the Hornets with nine tackles (six unassisted), while safety Terrick Colston added eight at Hampton. Freshman defensive back Logan Wescott had his first career interception, returning the ball 72 yards, at Hampton last week. For the season, linebacker Malik Harris is tops on the team with 55 tackles, including 32 solo stops. Harris leads the MEAC and is eighth among all FCS defenders in unassisted tackles at 6.4 per game. Hornet defensive end Gabe Sherrod has 27 tackles (21 solo) and a team-high three sacks. Sherrod leads all FCS players in tackles-for-loss at 2.1 per game. Colston is second on the Hornets with 46 tackles, while Barrett has 38. 

Florida A&M  (0-6; 0-3 MEAC) suffered a 27-24 home loss to North Carolina Central in its last outing. The Rattlers led 24-17 after an 18-yard touchdown pass from Carson Royal to Jairockei Jones with 12:54 left in the third quarter. NC Central tied the score on a touchdown with 5:19 left in the fourth quarter, and won the contest on a 20-yard field goal with 15 seconds left to play. Royal completed 29-of-47 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns. Montav Williams had nine catches and 139 yards, while Brandon Norwood hauled in nine balls for 101 yards and a touchdown. For the season, Royal has connected on 81-of-155 passes (52.3%) for 927 yards. He has thrown three touchdowns and four interceptions. Royal ranks fifth in the MEAC in passing yards at 154.5 per game. Williams is third in the league in receiving yards (62.5 pg) and fifth in receptions (3.8 pg), while Norwood is tied for first in the MEAC in catches (5.3 pg) and eighth in receiving yards (48.3 pg).  Florida A&M is third in the MEAC in pass offense at 219.3 yards per game.

THE SERIES
This is the 33rd meeting between the teams since the series began in 1977. Florida A&M won the last contest, posting a 41-7 victory at DSU’s Alumni Stadium in 2014. Quarterback Damien Fleming completed 23-of-30 passes for 337 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Rattlers in the contest. The last time the teams met at Florida A&M, the Hornets came out on top 29-21 in 2013. DSU trailed 21-3 before scoring 26 unanswered points in that meeting. Florida A&M has won five of the last six games between the teams to open up a 23-9 series lead.
