Langston football coach steps down

LANGSTON, Oklahoma -- Dr. Kent J. Smith, Jr., President of Langston University and head football coach Dwone Sanders reached a mutual decision that Sanders' contract will not be renewed following its expiration and that Sanders would be reassigned to other duties effective immediately.

Quinton Morgan, an LU alum and assistant coach, will serve as interim head football coach effective immediately.

"Coach Morgan is preparing the team for Saturday's homecoming game against Southwest Assemblies of God." Smith said in the statement, “After careful consideration and contemplation, I have decided the University needs to take the football program in a different direction. In an effort to continue our longstanding history of excellence, Mr. Sanders and I reached a mutual and amicable decision to place the needs of the football program as priority and make this necessary change. I wish to thank Mr. Sanders for his efforts and work on behalf of Langston University and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. I have full confidence in our Athletic Director, Donnita Drain Rogers and existing coaching staff that our team will soar to new heights, as a solid foundation has been established."
